Another earthquake in Mexico

OMG! Another one? And such huge quakes? I can remember when those big quakes in Central America seemed to creep up the west coast of the United States. I heard somewhere that they are all along the same fault line. Not good for Americans and even worse for Mexicans! Yes...Mother Nature is showing her destructive power
in ways we may never comprehend.

There was a 3.6 last night in the LA vicinity http://www.newsweek.com/los-angeles-earthquake-san-andreas-fault-36-667447 I would assume it was the "trigger".
It's not likely. The San Andreas and associated faults mark the boundary where the Pacific plate is sliding sideways alongside the North American plate. Today's quake in Mexico (and the 8.1 a few weeks ago) was in the Cocos plate, a different piece of the seafloor that is being pushed underneath North America.

Hoping for the best for everyone in the area.

The death toll now sits at 149. Dozens of buildings have collapsed in Mexico City.

Thinking about our neighbors in Mexico and all our Mexican-American friends tonight. Cuidense mucho y un fuerte abrazo para todos.

Devastating news from Mexico City. My thoughts are with those affected by today’s earthquake - Canada will be ready to help our friends.

It looks like this is on the same fault as the earthquake from September 8th, I'm guessing this would be considered an aftershock of that one, wouldn't it?

Thanks for all your concern once again. I am ok since I don't live near the area where everything happened. I was able to keep in touch with some friends and relatives and thankfully they are all safe.

It was an infamous 'anniversary' since it was on september 19, 1985 that Mexico City suffered a massive earthquake that collapsed and almost destroyed the city back then, so to have another quake 32 years later on the same day was an eerie and sad coincidence.

My thoughts and prayers with all the victims and people that wasnt able to escape the buildings that collapsed, I wish they will be rescued alive

Just tuned in on CNN and apparently, they were in the process of rescuing a girl from a school that had collapsed. The level of destruction is horrific!

If you would like to help in a way, you can try with this options listed on this webpage

http://time.com/money/4949412/mexico-city-earthquake-donations-victims/

For example we have 'Topos' the charity is a local rescue brigade that was vital to relief efforts for the catastrophic 1985 earthquake that rocked Mexico. They have asked for donations on Twitter for the Mexico City earthquake victims and are accepting payment through online transfer

PayPal: [email protected]

Given the exchange rate of dollars/euros to mexican peso trust me even the less amount of money is a lot when converting to our currency

Thanks for your prayers, thoughts and best wishes. Still many people under the buildings that collapsed so there is hope

Thanks for this information, @Braulio. I was wondering where to donate: I would like the money to go to those who are most vulnerable, because they have so few resources to start over again. That article provides some useful pointers.

I heard this interview on CBC radio about donor fatigue. Apparently with multiple disasters, donors can feel immobilized. In the light of this, it's good to learn about local options for donations. The interviewee, who works for Charity Intelligence, an organization that advises donors, noted that international charities were broadening their appeals so that their staff on the ground informed decisions about where funds were most needed. This is the approach of Doctors Without Borders, and I think I will increase the small monthly donation I make to them also.
