Adjustable Beds

Hi all -

I have ordered a Sleep Number Bed, so that I can sleep with my head elevated. That its firmness is adjustable is a plus, and I like that it has pressure relief and cooling capabilities. Problem is that it is very expensive and I am having a little bit of buyer's remorse. I do have a 100 night return time, except for the base adjustable (which itself is over $1,000), and I haven't taken delivery yet.

Anyone want to share experiences with Sleep Number or other adjustable beds? Thanks. :)

I love my Sleep numbers- we are definitely loyal customers. I have had 3 different styles for myself. My first one was more basic (my husband didn’t want a lot of foam top). My number is 40 and his is 80 so the 2 sides are perfect for us. Both the head and foot go up and down, great for when I have a cold or asthma but my husband doesn’t like the head up. It actually has “magic fingers” massage setting too but I don’t use it much (due to the cat not liking it). I don’t think they have that anymore.

Then we bought a weekend house so my second one was a full split king with 4 inches of foam top. It is like 2 twins bolted together (with a little separation in the middle) so we could put both the head or foot up separately. Turns out, my husband loved the thick foam top and I did not! And my cat did not like the split in the middle of the bed- she usually slept right in the middle at the bottom, but with the split, she wound up between my feet at all times. It is now a guest room bed.

So when we remodeled the house and needed a second king bed, we got a split top only with 2 inches of foam top. Perfect! We both like it, I can put my top up, I can put his top up if he snores, and the cat can sleep in the middle. Spoiled cat! We got all these before the computerized sleep analysis, but my SIL got one and loves it. She thought she liked a hard bed, but when she did the analysis, her Sleep number is 30! No wonder she had hip and back pain. People don’t realize that supportive is not the same as hard.

I still use my first one in my small condo in the city, but it is about 16 years old now and has been moved around a lot so it has a very slow leak- I bought a topper for it which works great. You don’t notice the leak during the night

Both my mother and I needed new guest room beds and my mother wanted a basic one of her own so when they had a big sale, we replace old spring models with very basic sleep numbers- not adjustable head/foot. After trying them out ourselves, we got 2 inch toppers for them. For 2 of them, I got the basic base which works better than the 2 platform beds my husband built for the other 2- the wood bases don’t seem to have enough give for the air to even out. So I do recommend using the Sleep Number bases.

Thank you. This helps - I don’t know anyone who has one so I have only my time at the store either one.

My mom got this adjustable bed from Target for less than $500 and she loves it.

Does she have a mattress/topper on it?

I have one and like it a lot. Mine does not bend at all, a feature I wish I had. The only thing that freaked me out was getting reports about the quality of my sleep from the company - it really felt intrusive, so I turned that off. Otherwise, I'd get another one if needed.

An adjustable bed frame really saved my sleep. I'd spent 10 years on a recliner due to a bad back, and then tried various ways of sleeping on a regular mattress (not a foam one, those don't work for me). I couldn't figure out how to position myself in bed to mimic a recliner until I realized that my legs from knee to feet had to be elevated, not just under my knees. So for awhile, I had wedges under my mattress to elevate my head and a big square dog bed, believe it or not, to lift up from knees to feet. But I wanted a nice looking bed, so I finally splurged on an adjustable frame to put my pillow top mattress onto. This was a game changer. I can have normal bedclothes to make my bed look nice during the day, but then adjust it to lift my head and my feet to ensure a good sleep free from pain.

This is the one that I purchased from a mattress store. I have since replaced my old mattress with another pillow top, which bends nicely with the frame. Since this worked out so well for me, my sister and niece have also purchased their own.

Now I wholeheartedly wish that adjustable beds were the norm in hotels. My sleep is never good when I travel.
