A summer getaway-- Luxembourg City

Hi FSUers! Hubby and I are going on a trip at the end of the month and have plans for every stop except for Luxembourg City. I heard about Luxembourg as a child and have had a desire to see it since then for no real reason. So, we are heading to Luxembourg with no agenda other than to satisfy the 8 year-old kid in me. What are your must sees and dos? I have researched, but right now we are completely open to add to our agenda. Thank you in advance!

If you meet any Genglers in Nospelt, Kehlen, Capellen, Luxembourg (don't know what all those cities are, I copied it from my genealogy page going back to 1715), they are my ancestors! :)

There really isn't much to do . You can take a walk and see the whole city in an hour, two hours max.

Many companies base procurement centers in Luxembourg to avoid VAT -- hence, a lot of people are there during the work week and commute home on weekends. Things tend to close early and to be quiet on weekends. Public transit is free on weekends to encourage people to visit .

Are you doing Luxembourg as a stop-over in between other destinations? If so, I would recommend planning it as a lunchbreak. Take a train or bus that arrives around noon and leaves around 4 -- you'll have plenty of time for a leisurely lunch and to see everything. Or if you're staying in Paris or London, take a train or flight that gets in early, and then you'll be ready to leave by lunchtime.

If you find yourself with extra time on your hands, you can take a bus to Schengen, where the famous agreements removing Europe's internal borders were signed. There isn't much there either - mainly a small museum. You can walk across the bridge to Germany, and then be in France five minutes later (on foot).

I did all of the above as a daytrip from London -- woke up and slept in my own bed -- and had time to spare . Don't get me wrong, it's pretty -- there's just not a lot to do or see.

What to do in Luxembourg City? Walk, eat, shop! That's at least two full hours! And if you have more time, you can do it all again! :)

The Luxembourg countryside is pretty, if unspectacular. I would encourage you to look into making reservations and visiting Clervaux and its abbey, church, and castle.

ETA: @Jayar as someone with a lifelong fascination with Luxembourg, you must make sure find ways to listen to the natives speaking in their mother tongue. Although usually classified as a dialect of German, Luxembourgish sounds like a synthesis of German, French, and even Dutch all at the same time. Apparently, even some immigrants have figures out that it pays to know the language, so you can sometimes here them speaking it with other locals instead of French, German, or English.

Thank you for making this thread! Luxembourg is so close to where I live, yet I never went to visit for some reason.

Now thanks to you and a couple of FSUers, I have a new destination on my list - I guess just like Brussels, Luxembourg is a nice daytrip getaway. Though it is a bit odd for a childhood dream destination...

It is odd for a childhood dream destination only if you grew up nearby. ;)
