9 dead in Toronto after van attack :(

It's been on North Am news for over an hour now, but i guess it is starting to be a recurrent event, that it is no longer big news, even if it is..... I watched a video of the arrest, from the street, and what surprised me is a group of shoppers walking by slowly right past the suspect and the officers yelling "get down! kill me"... the people are just walking by slowly, like it is a Hollywood movie.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdgMFumDV-c

It is surreal but I am waiting for my family to mark themselves as safe. A former co worker just did but waiting for my cousins to do so. They live in the area too.

:(

Prayers to all.

Like the disturbed individual who ran down a police officer and others in Edmonton last year, it sounds like this is someone who is mentally ill. The Edmonton attacker was also captured alive. Police seldom fire their weapons in Canada and then only when they have no other choice.

I can't believe this happened... everyone I know in the area seems to be safe but this was so beyond senseless and hard to swallow. Everyone was just outside today enjoying the weather during lunch, that's one of my favourite areas in Toronto, the shops, the restaurants, the movie theatre, the pet store, the library, just everything.

I used to spend a lot of time in the area years ago. It is such a beautiful neighbourhood. I can't even imagine what the victims must have felt. :(

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Toronto today....especially the friends and families of the victims.

I think most Canadians, such as myself, are still in shock over this one. Lots to process in the coming days. :(

There is something seriously wrong with the world. I hope we can get it fixed.

(Incel Rebellion stands for "involuntary celibate", meaning "girls won't give it to you")

In 2014, a person with the same name created an Android public parking app, available on Google Play, that allows users to search for parking locations in Toronto close to a specific address. The app was last updated in 2014, and had over 100 downloads.

Global News obtained a Facebook post Monday that Minassian wrote, just before carrying out his rampage, where he praised the “Incel Rebellion,” and California mass-killer Elliot Rodger, just before carrying out the rampage.

“The Incel Rebellion has already begun!” reads the post. “We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys! All hail the Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger!”

Rodger killed six people in 2014 in a vehicle and shooting rampage. Before carrying out the act, Rodger posted a video blasting the women who rejected him and the men who weren’t rejected and were sexually active.

When are we going to confront the problem of angry men being radicalized online by these misogynistic communities? Elliot Rodgers also belonged to this. It makes me so angry.
... i think if some one is off, then he/she will find a cause. This guy did not select a group of women, he ran down everyone who was on the street. People from his school and neighbors saying he always had issues..

She said Minassian was part of a programme at Thornlea Secondary School, in Toronto's northern suburbs, for high school students with special needs, attending a mix of mainstream and separate classes.
Chami remembers him walking the halls with his hands together and his head down, and making meowing noises.

... the issue seems to lead to a discussion if a person with his condition should be watched closely, and allowed to drive, etc... but then it would not be fair to those who "act strange" but have no intentions of causing harm..

The lack of self-awareness is astounding. Of course no self-respecting or smart woman would sleep with a guy who acts like it's his inherent right to have a girlfriend. But it's all the women's fault

Also not impressed with Toronto police spokesperson saying he doesn't know the motive, when the suspect made a Facebook post about "invchas" or however it's spelled. And then dude allegedly gets in a rental van and runs down pedestrians, most of whom are women.

I get that the police don't want to speculate without having certain amounts/types of evidence, but IMO most reasonable people can see a connection between the evidence that is available. And it seems to involve hating women

There is info that back in 2009 his mother said he had Asperger's Syndrome.
Sona Minassian had previously told a local paper in 2009 that her son had Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism.

If this is their excuse I'm going to get very very angry...Asperger's does not make someone perform a terrorist act like this. If this is their excuse it's going to make life horrible for many people with Asperger's, who are just ordinary people like you and me who happen to be wired a bit differently.

Aspergers does not equal violence and anyone who wants to make that connection should give their head a shake.

I am a sensitive person, and my heart goes out to the victims and their friends and family. But I'm so angry at the killer that I just want to shut down the TV and avoid reading the articles. I wish the identity of the perpetrators of acts like these would no longer be made public and that it was possible that the media didn't give it too much room (even though I know they are doing their job and there is no way to pretend this isn't a big deal). My reason is that these people do not deserve the attention they are craving. I really believe it would lessen the imitation effect. I don't want to focus on them. I don't even want to feel hate for them. I just want them to no longer exist in anyone's mind.

As I was watching the news tonight, witnesses reported that he seemed to spare men and target women. So far the police has reported that most victims were women, but they are cautious and won't give any detail yet about the motives.

In the past few days, as it's time to discuss the sentence to come for the author of last year's attack at a mosque in Quebec City, it was said that the criminal had been bullied growing up. Again, bullying doesn't does not make someone do something like that. However, I can see how serious social difficulties could possibly be one of many factors that lead someone to a path like this. Both could play a part into social exclusion, which in turn could lead someone to frequent online communities that also broadcast extreme ideas and ideals. As much as I roll my eyes when some people seem to believe that bullying, autism or something along those lines explains all there is to explain, or make them less responsible for what they did, I also think that it would be a mistake to discard these completely if we're looking for explanations. I see it like a plane crash: there is never one single cause.
