2026 US Nationals Men's Free Skate "It's Raining Menning"

It was extremely poor of him to attack Jason when Jason was the reason the US men had three spots to begin with (and certainly no thanks to Torgashev). The fact that he is now benefiting from Jason's efforts while Jason will get nothing feels especially cruel and unfair.
How is it unfair? Maybe you disagree with what he said, but that had nothing whatsoever to do with how either of them skated in the competition which is how the team is selected. Athletes win or lose based on the competition and not what fans think they should do or what they did a year ago. This is my biggest issue with figure skating. The results are what happens on the ice on that competition. Not previous, not practices, not what one wishes, but what happens in real time. Just like skiing or speed skating or car racing. Maybe Brown helped the US team earn 3 spots to the Olympics a year ago, but that did not mean he automatically would go to the Olympics. His free skate is what kept him off the team. Not anything Torgeshev or anybody else might have said to the press.

Weir was very obviously, all the way back from the short program, trying to set up a narrative that the only way Jason could make the team was favouritism or fixing.
I think it bears repeating that while commentators undoubtedly have their own viewpoints, they generally don't say anything on air unless the viewpoint has been vetted with their producer(s). NBC is a billion dollar org, they don't just let their commentators say whatever. Sometimes the viewpoint comes directly from the producers.

And going into this event, it looked like a "not having his best season" Jason was going to be the "only" person standing between Max and the Olympics.

So I'm guessing that's what NBC was gearing up the narrative to be, assuming Jason would do his usual and end up 2nd or 3rd, ahead of Max.

For me, the revelation of the men's event was Jacob Sanchez. Wow, wow, wow! I know I've seen him skate before, and I was wondering why people kept talking him up as a remote Oly selection, but now I get it. :cheer2:

I'm thrilled Torgashev skated so well. I didn't expect it at all. :p

FYI Ken Mikawa update. Ken is a recent college graduate with a degree in computer science. He is fluent in Japanese and English. He “gets by” in French and German. He got the official notice he was going to Nationals the week before the competition. Camden graciously called him earlier to let him know that he would likely have to withdraw. Ken has been offered a job in Japan. He intends to continue skating “in some form”.

While I'm sad that Jason didn't have the performance he was hoping for, I do not feel bad for him. He's had an amazing career. He's absolutely beloved by most fans. He's been one of the top men for a decade. He should be nothing but absolutely proud of himself. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Our top 3 are all American men born in the early 2000s with parents who skated for the USSR or Russia.
Malinin's parents never represented either of those countries. Roman Skorniakov did finish sixteenth at Russian Nationals once, but he never represented Russia internationally. Tatiana Malinina's family to Uzbekistan while it was still part of the Soviet Union, but she never skated at Soviet or Russian Nationals.

If someone had told me a month ago that Jason would not be on the Oly team..I would not have believed them..I just rewatched his FS..because I was in total shock last night..It was painful to watch..He has had a storied career..but..at some point..one's body breaks down..(MK) That is it.. My favorite performance of the night..was that of Jacob Sanchez..I became a fan during JGP,,his skating and his sportsmanship..

If they really went with BOW they should go with Tomoki since he has outscored Torgs by a lot internationally, but the PCS dumpage today doesn’t make me hopeful for Tomoki’s chances…
To clarify, they don't go by BOW. BOW is used to get into the selection pool and it is a factor in the team selection but so is finish at Nationals.

Jason Brown should do the classy thing and announce his immediate retirement, taking himself out of contention for any assignments. The quadless journeyman's journey had finally come to an end. Sad that he had to be taken off the ice with a shovel. It's of course up to skaters when to retire, but I wish more could choose dignified endings.
I can see why he stuck it out for the whole quad. The first two years of this quad, his skating was still putting him in the conversation if he was at times rusty from doing a lot of shows and stuff vs. training. It's only these past two seasons that he hasn't been able to put it out consistently and has, at times, had disastrous skates.

At that point and in retrospect, he should have retired but I am sure he was thinking, "only two more seasons."

I would love some insider gossip about what has caused this degradation. Age? Too many other commitments cutting into training time? Something else? Is he injured?

Dramatic much? Jason has been to two Olympics and has an Olympic Bronze medal. He'll be fine.

Wasn’t t the conversation last season that uSFS was giving Brown huge incentives to stay in because no one was stepping up to be a clear 2nd place?

I love Jason and would love for him to go out on a high rather than this, but it’s been clear that he’s been fighting his age the last 2 seasons. I do not blame him for staying in, I even think he might be capable of one more hat trick depending on what others do. Or he could have an even worse Olys than this Nats. they should go with the order of medalists.

The post I was responding to was talking about the BOW point system that does not include those things. But I'm still not sure how you got that out of my post.
Well, the Selection Calculation doesn't include those things - but the Selection Calculation Table is only one way to be added to the Selection Pool. Once the Selection Pool is created, the actual Selection Criteria does include those other items mentioned as part of the consideration.

Which is exactly what I said. BOW is a consideration, but it's not the only factor.

What most impressed me about Sanchez is he has a clear sense of style at only 18. Knows how he wants to skate. He has great basics and presentation. With two quads he will be in the conversation internationally.

And because his skating is so beautiful and entertaining, he can probably have a professional career for as long as he wants. Which certainly isn't true for a lot of other skaters.
