2026 Olys Womens FS PBP - Missed Full of Horrors

Dang that was a great event. Iida Karhunen with her 16th place 192.79 would have gotten 2nd at Europeans lol

What is the thread title a reference to? I LOVED cheated rivalry for the short 😂

Not sure but I wondered if the title was a reference to "The Mist."

Alyssa Liu has star power up the wazoo. Girl was born to be in the spotlight, so long as it’s on her terms and everyone’s vibes are good. If not, she’ll make them good.

What a palette cleanser of a women’s event compared to the last Olympics and the vibe the medalists (other than Kaori) gave off. I rather have this women’s event with such awesome skating from everyone, Donna Summer, and real personality on the ice than 5-7 quads from sequestered teenagers with crazy pressure to be on all the time.

Aw, I loved that Nicole Scherzinger gave a shout out to Sofia Samodelkina for skating to Sunset Blvd. In an age with all the rights complications (and dumb comments like that random dude who did Amber's music) it's nice to see artists appreciating skaters' use of their music (like Madonna did too for Amber - take that Seb whatever).

I'm guessing Alysa gets invited to the gala now. ;) I saw several videos on Instagram or Facebook where she said she hoped to be invited to the gala because she has a new program to Pantheress (?) she wants to show off. I fully expected her to be on the podium, though, so I knew she'd be invited. I just wasn't sure what color medal it would be. :p And I'm absolutely thrilled she ended up with gold (although I thought she'd be perfectly chill no matter what happened). I finally found a ladiezz skater to love like I loved Kwan. :cheer2:
Didn't Alysa get invited to the Olympic gala in 2022 in Beijing even thought she was only 6th? When you think about it a 6th place finish as a 16 year old with a full field including the Russians ladies tells you how she never was intimidated by anyone ever on the ice.

So now what are we supposed to do ... just like go back to work and stuff?! It's so hard coming down from 2 weeks of Olympics skating drama.
I hope so, the addition of the team event really turned the olympics into a marathon of sitting and eating candy that I am not equipped for. if they added one more event I would probably need a social worker to come lure me out.

Catching up the PBP and I must have read like 5+ posts saying they’re going share the unpopular opinion that they don’t like Alyssa’s Donna Summer program  .

I personally love it because it’s really nice to see a skater actually skate to the beat of the music and know how to use accents. The jumps are choreographed to actually hit accents too. That triple salchow was musical phrasing illustrated. I thought IJS killed that.

Also, that split jump and her photo-ready face in front of the judges is everything missing in most IJS programs.

Thanks for the link to Scherzinger's post @zigzig - I've re-posted it in the Music rights thread in GSD and, ICYMI, Seb McKinnon posted on Feb. 10th that he was looking forward to watching Amber's FS (post #294): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...-starting-in-2024.112084/page-10#post-6890625

Alysa! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

If this young lady (circa 2016 U.S. Championships--novices) wasn't worth ubering, no one is.

----

Also bravo to Ami. I loved that LP the first time I saw it at Lombardia. What a tough feat she had to face! Triple axel, up last at the Olympic Games, and while it's one thing to deliver at your first senior GP when you don't know how well you can score, it's quite another to do so at an Olympics when you know. I've liked Ami throughout her junior career, but she was never what I would define as a rock. Today she did just beautifully. That flourish in the final spin is quite the lovely finish to her journey this season.

----

And finally kudos to Kaori. What a career!

I adored this quad for the women. They were imperfect and unpredictable and gutsy and relentless. Kudos to Loena & Amber & Gubanova, along with Alysa & Kaori, etc. To all of them for showing that you can get through that bumpy hell that is adolescence and bring something more to the sport than rotations. What a slew of great SPs we had here, but the greatest legacy would be to see a bunch of the other young ladies in this event continue to compete and develop for 4 more years.

What does Amber do or not do to get a level two on the straight line step sequence? What is she not doing to get four? Is anyone with technical expertise know?
I just rewatched it a couple of times. For me there was not enough depth to the edges which is required to get the difficulty called. For example a couple of the steps I did pick up were she did a couple of choctaws that were wide stepped and did not have good clarity on the entry and exit edges. I also think that some of rockers and counters were a bit flat and scratchy on the entry and exit edges too. She probably got the twizzles and a loop.

Difficult Turns and Steps: twizzles, brackets, loops, counters, rockers, choctaws. Turns and Steps must be executed on clean edges. If a turn is “jumped”, it is not counted as performed.

For a Level 4 they need complexity which means

Must include at least 11 difficult turns and steps. None of the types of turns and steps can be counted more than twice. 5 types of turns and steps must be executed in both directions (the direction means body rotating to the left or to the right during the turn).

For Level 2 which I think she achieved

Must include at least 7 difficult turns and steps, none of the types can be counted more than twice.

This is the book that explains it.

Hope that helps. I am not the best on calling step sequences and haven't done any TC for quite a while so out of practice.

I find these types of analysis a bit misleading. If you look through all the GOEs and TES for all the judges, I don't see any particular pattern. The top and bottom marks for each GOE and PCS get dropped. So doing a total sum doesn't take into account which marks get thrown out.
I'm not sure what part of KAZ judge overmarking one skater in both the SP and LP is misleading. Is that how the judges mark now? "Well my marks are going to get throw out so it doesn't matter what I give them because I'm going high!" Their total for the comp was 223.3 for the Russian skater.

Their totals for other skaters in the top 6:
Alysa 218.25
Kaori 220.11
Ami 221.11
Mone 215.89
Amber 209.67

According to the KAZ judge Adeliia is the Olympic champion which to me is crazy based on the performance we had out there over the two events.

Looking at all the marks I didn't see any particular patterns. Most of the GOES and components that were given had at least two or more judges putting in the same marks. There were some outliers that whether high or low were not going to be counted in the final result.

Like Plushenko in his prime!
Why on earth do snarky comments keep coming up about Plushenko? He hasn't set foot on competitive ice in well over a decade. If you didn't like him, that's fine. But, man, when it comes to holding grudges ... no elephant has ever walked the face of this earth that had a memory that could come remotely close to as long as some of the members on FSU.

 But she is not the Olympic champion because there were 8 other judges on that panel.

What an incredible event this was, well done to the ladies for bringing us an awesome night of skating. :cheer:
I wasn’t even that invested in anyone in particular to start with but it was so emotional. All cried out now

Huge congrats to Alysa for laying down two winning programmes :cheer2: Sometimes you watch a skate and it’s a gold performance, regardless of when in the event it happens, you just kind of know that nothing that comes after will beat it. Miura/Kihara, anyone? Alysa’s performance just smelled of gold, from the moment she stepped on the ice, she looked so confident and performed it like a champ. Love her story, too.

At the same time, really feel for Kaori. Watching her try hold it together as her dream got crushed:wuzrobbed. It’s so sad when you’ve been watching all the blood, sweat and sacrifices they’ve made over the years. What an absolute pro.

Well done Amber for coming back, fighting and pulling out a skate to remember. On another night, this could have quite easily been enough to squeeze on the podium but it was such a strong competition.

And what a moment for Ami and Mone? Look forward to watching them in the coming years.

This generation of skaters really stands out for the way they conduct themselves, treat each other with respect and read the room when so much is at stake. Imagine having just become Olympic Champion or won a medal and being right next to your devastated fellow skater. Huge kudos, we’ve seen this all round at this event :respec: Think Shaidorov’s reaction is still my favourite.

So here we are, competition done. Loved how long it went on for and having an event to get into every few days. Roll on Worlds!

Johnny's comments about Adeliia are unfortunate, IMO. Not a single kind word.
Totally agree. After all, wasnt GP fired from her commentator position because "it is the responsibility of NBC to provide coverage that our viewers can trust to be unbiased?" Nothing "unbiased' about Johnny's mean-spirited remarks. Meanwhile, on GEM, Kurt was kind. He pointed out her mistakes but you could tell he felt for her, particularly when he said, "I think her heart was broken when she missed the quad." And Carol lane agreed with him. Quite the difference in commentators.

I would like to thank . . .

Ilia Malinin & his team for raking in the media attention.

Amber Glenn for winning Nationals.

Kaori Sakamoto for winning the women's SP head-to-head in the team competition.

Ami Nakai for winning the short.

Nathan Chen for finally killing the TV's obsession with finding the next Michelle Kwan.

And . . . Alysa's ugly face piercing.

For all combining to help kill the media's exhaustive, overhyping of the ladies event.

And, therefore, setting the stage for Alysa to win an Olympic gold medal! :swoon:

(Of course, there are some serious, hard-working folks, we can all thank too; but I wouldn't want the above contributions to go uncommented upon ;)).

I wish there could have been two winners as I am sad for Kaori, missing out narrowly on Gold twice these Olympics where Alysa won gold narrowly twice.

I loved Alysa's skates though, especially the SP and the gold was well deserved.

Eta: I rematched Alysa with little milly who is 3. She said: "I want to be like that too mummy, wear the golden "

I've also mentioned Joubert and Dai and Carolina and Pechalat/Bourzat in threads about these Olympics, is that allowed or should we never bring up past skaters?

Of course you are allowed to bring up any past skater you want. Goodness knows, I've been around long enough to remember decades of skaters...lots I liked and a few I disliked intensely. But I've learned to let go of the ones I disliked because ....well, I never really knew them personally and they've moved on with their lives and are quite likely very nice people after all.

The usual: I wish the skaters, especially Japanese skaters were able to count to 3. Thrilled for Petrykina and Nakai, what are result for both! Amazing skate from Glenn, was having a bit of 2014 flashbacks with Asada failing the SP and having a skate of her life in LP with a 3A finishing outside the medals.
Interesting competition with a 2loop curse - had Glenn landed a 3loop what would it be? Had Sakamoto added a 2loop to her final 3loop where would she be?

My thoughts from watching at the arena last night. Wow! Just WOW! This was the best skated event that I’ve ever had the privilege to watch live in my lifetime to date.

So so so many great skates and reactions!! Normally some of these skates and scores would be more than enough to sky rocket a skater up the rankings, but with almost all skaters delivering strong performances from Group 2 onward, it wasn’t enough. They can be thrilled with how they skated and delivered on Olympic ice with the highest pressure when it counts the most.

Very pleased with this podium and result!! Alysa was out of this world!! A standing ovation from the entire audience even to the highest seats in the arena where I was sitting. You could feel the energy and excitement in the building as she skated. Totally deserved the gold medal.

Sad for Kaori she couldn’t win gold as well but she should be so unbelievably proud of her performances in this quad. And kudos to Ami for delivering enough while skating last under all that pressure! And beyond thrilled for Amber to have this amazing skate and redemption on Olympic ice to finish Top 5!! If I’m being honest, I can’t see her delivering this same skate if she had been in medal contention going into the long program but I’ll take it!

This was SO worth extending my trip to watch the Women’s SP and LPs!! Exactly the palate cleanser I needed after the disappointment from the Men’s LP.

Plushenko has an added dimension because of his awful wife and speculation on his feelings about Putin and the war, he’s still very important in the Russian skating community.
With all due respect, do you personally know his wife? I, of course, have never met the woman so therefore don't feel I can pass a truly knowledgeable opinion on her. The word "speculation" always makes me dismissive of whatever follows it because, let's face it, we never know what's true or not these days. And, yes, I know Plushenko has at least some importance in the Russian skating community. He owns/ operates a skating school, does he? And, I think one of his sons is exhibiting a fair amount of skating talent. As I said, life goes on.
