2026 Olys Mens FS PBP - Habemus Pop-am

Where do you get off quoting my post and lecturing me about what should be memorable or forgettable to ME? Keep YOUR condescension to yourself. Is that direct enough for you?

Bro. You need to chill out so hard. No one lectured you. Good lord.

Thank god I have an ignore list.

Well that event was…something I’ll never bother watching again.

Disappointing when quality skaters couldn’t make the most of this opening. Congrats to Shaidorov for being the only one to land his jumps, but ooof I find him a rough watch.

I thought Ilia might have some issues, but I never thought to this degree. I’m sure we’ll get more info on this. Injury, mental state, combination of the two maybe.

I feel a bit bad for Torgy, he was 8th in the short and 9th in the free but total points put him 12th! It's crazy to see how different the SP and FS positions are. I guess that's a sign the judges are trying to mark what they see on the night so not complaining, we just don't usually see quite this many huge drops/rises.

I don't remember where I read it/heard it, but after Kerrigan biffed the 1993 Worlds, it was said she thought she was attending a coronation, not a competition. Not necessarily suggesting that's what happened here, but it popped into my head.

Anyhoo ... I'm thrilled for Shaidorov. He EARNED this.

Love this for Shaidorov!

And Gogolev!!! Who would have thought?!? Second in the free skate and so close to a medal. Wow!
Gogolev was my favorite skate of the night!

I think he's severely underrated (also on this board), his jumps are so clean and seamless, his programs are well choreographed and I don't think he's as bad at PCS as some people make it sound. My friend and I saw him live at Nebelhorn and both were drawn into his skating there already.

Well, what a crazy night. I actually had 2nd and 3rd place right in the betting game with my friend, but obviously didn't expect it to come to that like THIS. Would have been nice to have a better skated final group, but what a great night for Shaidorov!

Isn't it really a risk/reward issue? Ilia could have landed his quad axel and all his other jumps and cemented his position as the best ice jumper ever on the biggest stage. I thought he was going for a legacy as opposed to a medal. I respect he went for it. I am happy for the three medalists and for Stephen who gave us Canadians a thrill! This doesn't diminish the role that Ilia has played and will continue to play in the sport and - to quote Ted Barton - you learn more from the skates like this than you do from the wins.

I do want to state that I'm happy it was Shaidorov who won if it wasn't Ilia or Adam. And I'm really happy that Shun medaled since he's had such a solid season.

It's a great result for Kazakhstan and will hopefully raise the profile of figure skating even higher there. We need another strong 4CCs nation and they've got all the potential to be that with the time & money put into developing their skating program more fully.

Onto Worlds for the men.

Sounds cute but no. Speaking for myself, I cannot imagine wanting to go back and watch these error-filled performances in final group OR listen to the god-awful screeching music of the new Olympic champion’s free skate. Forgettable, through and through.
For my part, I'm never going to watch that group again, and certainly not Ilia's error filled FS. I'm certainly not going to watch tonight's broadcast. 🙁

I'm thinking he's going to be having a lot of mental gymnastics going on in the next 5-6 weeks til then. It will be interesting to see how/if he rebounds.

He has been very classy so far, aside from the cameras catching his frustration right in the second he stepped off the ice. I hope he is able to grow from this and not let it crush him.

Maybe he can hang out with Simone.

I'm not sure having competed in 2022 would have made any difference. IMO I think coming in with crazy hype is the bigger challenge. We saw it with Simone Biles in 2021, which was her 2nd Olympics. This is Yuma's 2nd Olympics but he came in with much bigger expectations, and struggled a lot more. You can wuzrobbed the 2022 Olympic team as much as you want (and some of you have been for 4 long years), but do you honestly think that having already competed in a pressure packed team event that this was just Olympic jitters? Or maybe was it the fact that he's been massively hyped, already pretty much handled the gold medal and therefore focusing on breaking records and doing a 7 quad layout instead of just trying to win?

I can't believe how calm and even-tempered Shaidorov seems. I've seen more emotion after a Kevin Aymoz FS that didn't even win a medal. That must just be his temperament, and in a way, not being overly excitable is a great quality to have in a sport where you face this much pressure. It would be interesting to see how he performs when he is considered a favorite to win.

Yuma Kagiyama, 4 time Olympic silver medalist, 3 time world silver medalist. And I used to think Sasha Cohen won a lot of silver medals!
I think this one comes with a sting. Of course he couldn't know it would be right there for him. Wow this was quite the event.

Be careful… the tone police in here will tell you that this was in fact a highly memorable event worth watching again so don’t be disappointed! lol

I think that's part of what happened to him in the fall, honestly. I think he's said he didn't expect to be in that position and it was hard on him. I guess we'll see if being the OGM puts more pressure on him or if he's just playing with house money.

I do think that as soon as he popped the 4A he should have done a 3Lo instead of going for the 4Lo, which has been his nemesis for quite awhile. Had he done that, I think he would have gotten back on track and been fine for the rest of the program - or maybe not, but probably at least enough to have held on for a medal.
