One thing that is comforting in all of this, is that his coach/dad seems to be a level headed kind of guy who seems to always be there for his son and, despite what the hype train tried to show us, Ilya himself seems to be reflection of that.
Ilya will be fine and will keep learning.

There's a photographer ( who may post here ) who tweeted one day that she reckons the audience is 60% American, 30% Italian and 10% other nations at figure skating events.

Sounds cute but no. Speaking for myself, I cannot imagine wanting to go back and watch these error-filled performances in final group OR listen to the god-awful screeching music of the new Olympic champion’s free skate. Forgettable, through and through.

You definitely have a point. He'll think about it, of course, but I hope it just gives him the motivation to work harder and improve in the areas he needs to. He's young (just turned 21), so he'll (hopefully) have another chance in 2030.

Adam, Yuma and Ilia will all be doing the wait for a redemptive Olympics in four years. Has there ever been a Games when the last three to skate had such problems?

I would have loved to see his reaction if we have the normal situation with the skaters sitting with their coaches when they find out.

Well, this is a real mixed emotion for me. I'm thrilled for the medalists, especially gold and sorry for Malinin and Adam who expected different results. But, happy that Gumennik finished where he did under very difficult circumstances. Olympics are always unpredictable which makes them like no other competition.
