2026 Olympics Team Event - Strategy, Predictions & Discussion

I hope Canada sends a 3rd pairs team to be on stand by in case DM cannot skate the pairs event due to her injury. Why did they leave it so late I wonder if this has been bothering her for awhile?
 
Yes, but the article said she sustained the injury training in Montreal before leaving for the Olys. With that known before they left, why not send a backup team just in case? Like when the US sent Kwan back in 94 in the event Kerrigan was not healed enough to skate (in the end of course she was healthy enough to skate and Kwan wasted a trip but still, it was prudent to send Kwan just in case IMHO).

Deanna and Max haven't left. They're still in Canada.
I would almost guarantee that Laurin & Ethier are ready to go. The pairs draw isn't until Feb 13 so there's still plenty of time.

I remember that, but I also recall someone talking about one of the women going to Japan to train for a few days. That would have been unofficial, of course, and I may be up in the night.

This is today. I'm assuming the US would list all the members of the team as being available, but has anyone found anything official?

Not that I've seen, but you are correct that most countries with multiple entries are going to list all of the members of the team as being available. About the only ones who I wouldn't expect to be listed are Deanna & Max simply because they aren't even in Italy yet.

FWIW, Team Event entries on ISU site now show Pereira/Michaud as the only Canadian pair entry. Again, I am talking about Team Event entries. I'm just saying that ISU site is getting updated.


Agree that in general, it makes sense for Team Event federations not to exclude any options at this point.

FWIW, someone posted on reddit that Deanna's injury happened as the result of a fall while training last Friday. I don't know if there is any truth to that claim.
 
Are the times listed on Olympics.com Milano time? I'm guessing I'll have to convert the times and most likely start to watch after breakfast each morning. Until the long programs...!
 
As has been discussed multiple times earlier in this thread, today was the deadline for the countries to confirm skaters in the TE, but that only means skaters "available" to participate in the team event. (@Karen-W had a spreadsheet for this a year ago. :lol: )That is the first deadline.

The next deadline is 10 a.m. on the 5th to identify skaters for the women and pairs SPs and RD. These segments will take place the following day.

The deadline for identifying the men for the SP in the TE is 9 a.m. on the 6th. (The men's event takes place at 10:45 on the 7th.)

Then, the FD participants have to be identified within ten minutes of the completion of the men's SP on the 7th. (There really is very little time after the men's SP.) They skate the FD at 13:05 that day.

Then, all the participants for the men, women's, and pairs free programs have to be identified by 23:00 on the 7th. They skate the next day.

After these deadlines, skaters cannot be replaced regardless of injury or illness. If someone was not put on the list today, they cannot be added. However, obviously, not all the "participants" named today will actually compete.

I think the teams will wait until the last minute to identify their skaters.

Yes, all times being mentioned and listed on Olympics.com are Milano time which is 6 hrs ahead of ET.

Scratch that. I just went and looked and Olympics.com automatically converts the event times to the time zone detected by the device viewing the page - it's showing 0:55 for the TE RD on Friday for me, which is correct since I'm on the West Coast.
 
Because of the middle-of-the-night times for the west coast for the team rhythm dance, pairs short, and women's short, I was going to sleep in and watch Peacock replays unspoiled. But now that it looks like Alysa might be skating her short program (if we can trust the TV promo :p ), I will have to watch live. :drama:

My plan for Thursday is to go into the office early in the morning then come home to work for the afternoon and go to bed as soon as I log off the work computer in the hopes of getting a good 7-8 hours of sleep before Day 1 of the TE starts. And then work from home all day Friday so that if I'm dragging to keep my eyes open at least I won't be operating a vehicle at any point during the day, lol.
 
So glad i'm retired now and don't have to worry about missing anything and can choose when i'll get some sleep. Still kinda sucks that the TE is in the middle of the night here but at least when the individual events start they will be in the late morning early afternoon.

It's just Day 1 that is in the middle of the night and that's because the Opening Ceremony. Days 2 & 3 are during the daytime for North America.
 
I work from home on Friday so I will be able to watch two of the three skating events from the Team Event live (not getting up at 4 AM as much as I love the ice dancers....that is way too early when I have to work all day :eek: ) and then I can just watch the RD on demand before I watch the Opening Ceremony live in the afternoon. I wish I was still working from home full time like I was in 2022 because I literally watched EVERYTHING skating related back then and it was so awesome. I will do what I can this time around though! :cheer:
 
In an indication that Figure Skating is a niche sport, the sportsbook Fanduel was offering 8 to 1 odds on Japan winning gold in the team event. I could never bring myself to bet against the US, but I was tempted. Some knowledgeable fans have since brought the odds down to 5 to 1, which I think is still too high until we know whether Ilia will be doing the FS.
