2025 US Club & NQS Competitions

Dang... If you thought Nicholas' two falls were bad... Patrick had a complete meltdown in the FS. Waiting on the protocols.

ETA -

And, I agree that Patrick is trying too much content - he was struggling with the same problem last season & his team still hasn't figured out that he'd be better off dialing it back a little, especially in the FS.

Very rough free skate for men at Junior Cup... Lots of falls.
Henry Gao might be one of the few who did a clean skate.

Corrected since there were other skaters who did not fall, of course (Henry looked most happy with his skate, though)

I'm glad for Lucius to make the top 2, but these men are hellbent on not making it easy for the USFS to decide JGP assignments, aren't they?

Seeing as we're going to have at least 10 JGP spots for the men, I'd maybe lean toward giving the top 5 here 1 JGP, with 6-7 as next up should no one medal at their first JGP, then figure out the last 3 JGP spots later on after Cranberry Cup and some more NQS comps next month.

Aboian/Veselukhin are doing it again!

Bring it, world!
My goodness, these Jr RD scores are looking bleak apart from AboVes. Vaclavikova/Lissauer withdrew, so maybe they'd have danced circles around the rest of this field, and of course IlinCain aren't competing this week, but AboVes have a nearly 11 pt lead over the team that finished 2nd in this phase.

Waiting on the protocols - plus @TanithandBenFan to check in with some impressions/thoughts.

I took a necessary nap this afternoon and am just checking the Jr Cup Women's results. With 14 spots, the USFS is probably breathing a little easier about how to farm out the assignments. Top 3 certainly seem likely to get 2, then 4-6 seem likely to get 1, which would leave 5 spots for other skaters to try and nab by doing better at Cranberry Cup and some later NQS events next month than they did here.

My sister and I have notepads! Got a few pics since the net is raised this year.

It’s early season, @Karen-W. Patience!

I will also post a full report later.
Oh, I know, but I think we've all gotten a bit spoiled with a plethora of teams in juniors easily scoring in the high 50s here at Dallas Classic. Of course, we do have the 'promising new team debut' with Robertson/Rohner, but this field just feels a little thinner than normal and it isn't helped by the lack of IlinCain or VacLiss.

In a completely non-shocking development, Caroline Mullen struggled with her twizzles again. :wuzrobbed

Score difference between Cui and Koncius is about the same as at Nats. Bummer about Caroline and the twizzles. Looks like they also struggled with levels on other elements.

Ichilov improved 3 points from Chesapeake. We'll have to see how they do in the FD, and how T/K skate (I assume they are doing LP?), but I wouldn't be surprised to see Ichilov as the Israeli team in Beijing.

Neither would I. That's a respectable score that would certainly put them in the mix in Beijing.

I apologize for the delay in reporting. We were stuck at the rink for awhile after the Sr RD. Two to three inches of rain fell during the RD. 🙈 I thought we might be stranded in a rink overnight with a bunch of ice dancers LOL. Having coach Ben Agosto there would have made it not so bad however 😁 I will type up my notes shortly!

Jr RD (in skate order)

Stapert/Korotcov

red plaid, black and white outfits, New Kids on the Block music, big error for her on twizzle, there's a lovely surety to their glide and they had good unison, room for the program to develop.

Robertson/Rohner

This team started with impressive acceleration, but slowed down by the end of the pattern. As the season progresses, I hope they can make their speed more consistent, as it was very impressive! First thing that struck me with this team is how limber they are and how well they move their backs. Good use of full body movement.

Deych/Hu

hot pink dress for her, he was in black (I think). Ricky Martin music. This program seemed to cover up some of their strengths. They have such similar body movement and extension, but I couldn't really see that used much in the choreography. OTOH I do think the program will help them develop their repertoire as this program is more peppy and showy in contrast to last year's classical FD.

Aboian/Veselukhin

Well, Athena and partner are back. :cheer2: Skating to Vogue in striking black and white costumes. They come out in WU at blazing speed, and also when they are introduced right before they start the program. It's a theatrical, commanding look--but they never reach that speed in their program so maybe should hold back a bit. Nice pattern work and they're already starting to incorporate little choreographic details with arm movements, etc. Program choreography was a cut above the rest of the field, more unique and interesting. Thanks, Gregory and Petukhov's team for giving us something new in ice dance! This is the team that looks ready to compete for JGP wins.

Feige/Middlekauff

Soft knees, I think they are just up from novice and this was a nice junior skate, showing good basics and emerging expression

Fischer/Fischer

He was a ham to start! Kinda went in and out of expression as they negotiated the elements, some of the pattern steps felt like work so they'll want to smooth those out, but nice basics and good foundation to build on

Fugate/Fugate

Cotton-Eyed Joe and another country-piece that I'm blanking on, surely chosen to appeal to the Dallas crowd--who am I kidding, the crowd was the families of the kids skating. Costumes had huge belt buckles. But I think this fun program worked and will stand out amongst all the pop music. This program also had some nice choreographic line dancing flourishes incorporated into the program. Clean skate.

Carhart/Bledsoe

Another team up from novice. She seemed very unfazed about this higher level of competition. I spent much of the program contemplating the appropriateness of "Barbie Girl" and whether the song has aged well. Music-aside, they are right where they want to be age-wise and they have years to add more power to their neat feet and fun expression.

Kouevi/Homawoo

"Jump" and "Motownphilly" I was very impressed with their improvement since last season where they looked like a team just up from novice. They had great speed and command of their bladework. His edges were perhaps a bit deeper than hers, and their expression continues to become bigger and imbued with feeling. Well done!

Sr RD (Americans in skate order)

Yi/Savelev

Cool move where she does the splits between his legs and changes directions (you'll just have to see it because I can't describe it better than that), stronger in competition than in warm-up

Mullen/Mullen

MC Hammer songs, I think. Bobble on the twizzles. Of any of the teams here, this team is the one I could just watch skate. They are a masterclass in effortless acceleration across the ice and with incredible unison, too. Choreo works for a sibling team, and will continue to grow throughout the season. Just got to clean up levels and hit the twizzles!

Koncius/Shchepetov

silver sparkly outfit for her, don't remember his (probably black . . . when in doubt, go with black), Ricky Martin music. Nice mature presentation, much like Deych/Hu--a departure from their more classical programs--though I'd say this one was definitely more successful, some of the best twizzles of the day, a little dicey on the lift dismount, but handled

Cui/Rogers

Definitely the strongest of the night, they are both engaged performers and their technique was well done. OTOH, while watching many of the other teams, you see room to grow and develop their programs, and this one, while well-skated, felt generic, and I'm not sure there's that room to expand and continue to breathe life into this choreography. Hope they prove me wrong!

International teams

Ivanitskiy/Sperry: Petrenko "I'm Too Sexy" tribute program. They look like developing seniors and it's nice for Finland to have another team in the wings beyond their top 2.

Larson/Kapran: Glory to Ukraine! Fun program with a few wobbles

Ichilov/Nosovitsky: Not at all sure I agree with that result. I mean, fun program, but no notable unison nor significantly more polished than the other teams.

Junior RD music and thoughts:

Jasmine Robertson/Chase Rohner – Groove is in the Heart by Deee-Lite/100% Pure Love by Crystal Waters - skating very close together in the midline for a new team; good speed and great energy; very fast rotational lift; impressive all around for their debut!

Lily Wheelahan/Wolfe Jin – Spice Up Your Life/Who Do You Think You Are by the Spice Girls

Hana Maria Aboian/Daniil Veselukhin – Vogue – so incredibly polished already; exquisite leg lines in the pattern; love the little hand movements as choreographic touches throughout; they look more mature than last year and ready to take on the world!

Sophia Feige/Wiles Middlekauff – Cosmic Girl/Canned Heat by Jamiroquai

Grace Fischer/Luke Fischer - Cantaloop by US3

Clara Fugate/Warren Fugate – Cotton-Eyed Joe/Boot Scootin Boogie (did not sound like Brooks & Dunn) – we have our fist 90s country RD!

Marian Carhart/Denis Bledsoe – My Oh My/Barbie Girl by Aqua – missing synchronicity in parts - have they missed training time?

Tallulah Belle Neary/Jonathan Young – Baby One More Time/Drive Me Crazy by Britney Spears

Annaelle Kouevi/Yann Homawoo – Jump by Kris Kross/Motownphilly by Boyz to Men - improved technique from last season! Would love to see added expression with the high energy music

Senior RD music and thoughts:

Grace Yi/Danila Savelev – Boombastic by Shaggy/You Don’t Love Me by Dawn Penn – I continue to adore his movement

Caroline Mullen/Brendan Mullen – 2 Legit 2 Quit/U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer – really good speed as always for them; love that they threw in a little Running Man in the midline – we did that in high school in the 90s!

Klara Kowar/Thomas Schwappach – Strike It Up/No Diggity/Jock Jams mix – Thomas wins costume of the night: blue basketball jersey with “Schwapp” on the back

Raffaella Koncius/Alexey Schepetov – Maria/Cup of Life by Ricky Martin – super fast rotational lift that was a highlight (slightly clunky dismount)

Amy Cui/Jonathan Rogers – Here We Go, Let’s Rock & Roll by C&C Music Factory/This is How We Do It by Montell Jordan – very crisp on the midline

Daniela Ivanitskiy/Matthew Sperry – I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred

Zoe Larson/Andril Kapran – Bamboleo/Volare/Baila Me by Gypsy Kings/Selena Quintanilla Mix by Christian Crisostomo/Marcia Baila by Ricky Martin - I didn't even think about Selena music for the 90s theme but I love it!

Shira Ichilov/Michael Nosovitsky – Maria/Cup of Life

It's definitely a rebuilding year for US Jr Ice Dance, but the same can be said of the international field with so many teams aging out and a few breaking up. I'll discuss that more in the Dance Hall later. As for the U.S., Aboian/Veselukhin are far and away the best of the current juniors, which is no surprise since last year's domestic contenders Mullens, Peals, and Wolfkostin/Tsarevski had to move up to senior.

So which teams can fill that gap? Ilin/Cain are the obvious choice based on the last few seasons. The only other team from the JGP at Dallas Classic was Deych/Hu (4th here in SP and 10th at their JGP last season). Teams like Robertson/Rohner and Kouevi/Homawoo have the skills to look like they belong on the JGP, they just need the experience.

Since programs are so new and the season is barely begun, one thing I note at Dallas Classic is who is making progression in their overall skills (e.g., deeper edges, more comfort in expressing the music and theme, etc.), and I was pleased with what I saw. It's still a deep field even if there aren't quite so many world busters at the top.
