2025 NHK Trophy Womens SP PBP - Time To Say But Why?

Finally got around to watching the women. No lie, I'm glad I went to bed after the men's SP. I was very tired and this wasn't a particularly well-skated competition.

Medland-Spence – she’s a lovely skater, but she’s not unseating Maddie; I do appreciate her skating to big, grand music – we need more skaters willing to do that.

You – she’s only 21? I thought she was older than that! Well, I’m already interested in this non-typical Korean ladies program & costume; all the Jia-stans are gonna hate me for saying this, but I’d rather she go to the Olympics than Jia. That skate just made the Korean ranking comp & K-Nats a lot more interesting, lol.

Aoki – eeeek – huge error on the opening jump, that’s gonna hurt. But screwing up the attempt to make a combo at the end is gonna hurt even worse. Maybe she should have stayed retired after last season after all…

Hendrickx – well, a 3z+2t isn’t really gonna get the job done; aw man, down on the 3f… I quite like the program and am happy to see her go back to the Celine Dion well for her changed SP – it will be a beautiful program when she skates it clean.

Samodelkina – not sure about these red flowers scattered all over the bodice of her dress – very Christmasy; I appreciate the brassiness of some of this choreo and arm/shoulder-ography in the step sequence!

Kaiser – well, that wasn’t as bad as I expected based on her score, but I’m really worried she won’t be able to earn the Swiss OC’s minimum score to go to the Olympics and that will be a real shame since she’s fighting so hard against this injury. Really nice program – don’t care that it’s Whitney, like Loena, skating to a diva like Whitney works for Livia.

Yun – and here’s our neutral Korean woman of the competition… All very lovely and inoffensive. Meh.

Higuchi – millennial pink washes her out; eeek – 2z and now no combo. She’s a lovely skater but there’s some home-cooking in that score. I don’t even see her getting a 4CCs assignment at this point unless a miracle happens at J-Nats.

Pezzetta – she’s not going down without a fight to Gutmann for that Italian Oly spot. Oof, spoke too soon. These women are as hot-and-cold as the men were earlier.

Lin-Gracey – I’m sorry, but Elyce, no one should ever let Amber emo-girl Glenn pick their music. Between that and Tammy Gambill as your coach, how much of a chance do you really have to be successful at the senior level? And down on the combo. See?

Everhardt – eeek – that fall made me feel for her ankle! I’m so bummed for her sophomore GP season; hoping for better tonight – just shake it all off and go for broke, kiddo!

Sakamoto – LMAO; you could hear the sob in Mark’s voice as Kaori took her starting spot, lol. Beautiful program. No complaints.

I hope Aoki skates forever and ever and ever. This is textbook why skating skills are so important. She could fall fifteen times and I'd still sigh and say what a beautiful program.

:cheer2: You :cheer2:

OMG. When I saw Sofia's costume and saw the music I thought, meh. Then the program started and I could not be more charmed. It's sassy and flirty and folksy in the best way possible. I even like the damn cartwheel. It made me happy. Imagine how many endorphins you'd have if you saw that program back to back with Isabeau's zooby-zooby-zoos.

I'd fall too if I had to listen to Freddie Mercury imitate cats yowling. Who decided that an 18 year old jumping powerhouse like Anna should skate to this?

I've no doubt Sarah loves to compete. I'm not sure she loves to skate.

KAORI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL THE FEELS!!!!!!!!!!

Livia KAISER

Like the dress.

3lutz 3tl
3flip down
3sal
2ax
Combo spins
Just standing and moving arms
1lutz 2loop and another jump?
3flip down again.
3loop down again. Gah, disastrous.
Wobble on the spins. SHizuka Arakawa says that she's hiding pain in her left knee?
Audience clapping to encourage her.
Spins again.

Duh

Arakawa: With the free skate being longer, it's hard to recover when you make a mistake and lose the rhythm.
KAISER is a skater who skates more smoothly. I guess it's because of her injury.

Katherine MEDLAND SPENCE

2luz
3loop 2ax 1ax jump seq
3flip down
Spins
3sal wild landing
2ax 2tl
3tl 2tl
combo spins beautiful
SS
1loop
Spins to finish.

Despite mistakes, it was decent.

Arakawa: I need more difficulty on the jumps. That said, her spins and steps were very elegant. (something like that)

After getting all ready for bed and feeding the cats, I still wasn't feeling tired so I decided to watch the women's SP before going to bed. Since the event was rather underwhelming overall, I have comments on only a few:

Young You - Skated a clean program. Thought the program was good. Liked her dress. She was pretty darned good.

Loena Hendrickx - Wonderful program. Gorgeous dress. Too bad about the jump errors. All her other elements got high levels.

Sofia Samodelkina - She was great. Wonderful interpretation of her music; great spring in her jumps. Obviously, working with Rafael is getting the job done.

Wakaba Higuchi - No combo = heartbreak. IMO, no one should skate to "My Way." Just asking for a jinx ...

Kaori Sakamoto - In a class of her own. Nuff said.

OKAY, so I just have the Women's FS tomorrow and I will have seen ALL of NHK (a first for any GP event for me this season). I'm really looking forward to Skate America and Finlandia, both of which are in "kind" time zones for me, hopefully enabling me to watch everthing "live."
