2025 NHK Trophy Mens SP PBP - Maybe !, Maybe UR

Just caught up on the Men's SP. Some random thoughts ...

Haru Kakiuchi - Other than the fact that he's a really handsome 19-year-old kid, I don't remember much about him.

Francois Pitot -2nd clean SP this GP season. He's new to me but I really like him. Could he be France's "next one?" Hope he can hold it together in the FS.

Jimmy Ma -I admire the maturity of his skating ... very well balanced in all the skills. But, unfortunately, the jumps weren't there today. And he's 30 years old already? Seems like there are more and more "older" skaters still in competition these days. I can remember when a 30-year-old singles skater would have been considered a "dinosaur." Maybe they still are?

Boyang Jin - That was a pretty good skate for Boyang. Too bad about the extra step in the jump combo. I totally disagree with any griping about his PCS. It's not like they were THAT high and he really did seem to be working on his interpretation.

Gabriele Frangipani - Some really fun choreo to the "I Feel Good" section but too many errors for the good impression to last for very long. I do think this program could get a standing "O" if skated perfectly clean.

Andrew Torgashev - Fall on the opening quad aside, a decent skate overall. I know Andrew is one of the great American hopes but I keep waiting for him to blow me away. Hasn't happened yet. Maybe I just haven't seen him skate enough times. I'm going to assume that it will happen sometime ... in the future.

Adam Hagara - Nice 4T at the beginning and then the mistake on the 3A (sigh). A rather abrupt change of music in his Bruno Mars medley...kind of jarring. But, overall, just the one error, so not too shabby.

Junhwan Cha - YESSS! Now THIS is a skater worth watching over again. That step sequence was brilliant and his connection with the music throughout the entire program was spellbinding. SUCH a talent! I know it wasn't a perfect skate but ... wow ... it's skaters like Cha (at his very best) that make me love this sport so much. And, just as icing on the cake, he's extremely easy on the eyes, no?

Matteo Rizzo - Matteo just wasn't feeling his legs today. Glad he got the 3A though. Overall, what could have been an excellent program was underwhelming.

Lukas Britschgi - "No Good" for the entire SP requires such energy and speed and Lukas delivered on these counts. Unfortunately, a 3/3 combo just doesn't cut it at this level. He's a great entainter though.

Shun Sato- An absolutely lovely program delivered so, so well by Sato. I have not a single thing to criticize ... it was really great.

Yuma Kagiyama - WOW .... I just LOVE that program. He wasn't perfect today and got zero value for the spin. Just imagine the score he will get when it's clean. I really liked his shirt too ... he looked very classy. Yuma is easily my favorite male singles skater right now. He's got what I call "musical feet." Hope to see this SP and his FS skated to perfection in February.

I find the term "menning" about as nasty, dismissive, and disrespectful as it gets.

These guys are out there doing incredibly difficult and dangerous elements and deserve our respect, not ridicule.
