2025 Canadian Spring/Summer/Fall Competitions

Quick thoughts so far:

Jr./Sr. Pairs SP

L/H - Music is Walk This way by Aerosmith. Solid 2 twist, sbs single axels, double throw lutz. Obviously a new team, but could develop into something down the road. Edited to add - I cheated them out of a rotation on the axels - protocols list the element as SBS 2A's. Happy to be wrong! :)

D/T - Looked a bit more organized than at the Quebec summer provincials. Good sbs 2A’s, but a bobble on the throw. There are no replays, and I couldn’t tell how close Jazmine was to landing it from the live angle. Black-Eyed Peas medley is a great music choice for them.

L/J - Music is Seven Nation Army by Baltic House Orchestra. Nice to see Bryce Davison with a new pair team! Reverse jumping team, very young and very much under development at this point

M/K - Music is Paint It Black from Netlix’s Wednesday. LOVE this program, immediately hits you over the head with the theme as a good SP should do. Killer 3twist. Riku sadly had a bit of a stumble on the SBS jumps, but otherwise they look great for this early in the season. If skated clean, this will be tough to beat at the Olys.

Junior/Sr. Women SP

Victoria Barakhtina - Clean and strong SP, unquestionably JGP ready. Skating skills are solid, nice stretch and glide . Much prefer watching her to Shiryaeva. Needs a bit of work on finishing/connecting with the audience, but that will likely improve working with the Cricket Club crew.

Gabby Daleman - Music is a Pink Medley. Great to see her looking strong and healthy again! Speed and power is still world class. Terrific 3t-3t. I think I had something in my eye at the end of her skate. ;)

D/T she just landed clunky on the throw. She has a lot of charisma and they skate like they could be senior in power.

Gabby had a great skate, she was on and very satisfying for her.

Kaiya, I just could not get into the slow Smile music and I am trying to be kind, still comes across as a small skater.

Minsol did a Bond program and was fast and clean with great spins. She is a tiny person and can fill the rink.

How much this event will determine that Skate Canada TBD spot, who knows. Free programs are tomorrow.

You know what’s cuter than baby pairs? Baby dancers!

A couple more quick thoughts from the Sr. Women’s SP:

Kaiya Ruiter - Music is female cover of Nat King Cole’s Smile. 3F - 3T combo to start, rotation on 3T looked suspicious in real time, protocol lists it as <. Popped the planned 3Loop into a double landed on 2 feet. Still not a great deal of power in her skating, the gentle musical choice suits her well.

Breken Brezden: Music is The Carpenters’ We’ve Only Just Begun. Pretty program, pretty dress. Opened with a solid 3Toe-3Toe, but ugly fall on the 3Lutz. Shame the Lutz is on vacation, likely will make a reappearance once the stress of trying to get an international assignment is over.

Looking at the protocols, really surprised to see that Ruiter was actually ahead of Daleman on PCS. Barely, but still. Watching in person, I thought Daleman had significantly better speed, power, and projection, and that Ruiter still skates small and lacks power, but obviously the judges appreciated other aspects of her skating more than I did. (Admittedly, I hate “Smile”, so that might have prevented me from enjoying Ruiter more.) It will be interesting to see how they both look in the free program.

I don’t suppose anyone has any news on Kwon’s plans? I enjoyed her Bond program and would gladly welcome her if she is looking to switch to representing Canada. Hopefully she will get to compete internationally this season one way or another, whether it’s for Korea or Canada.

I only saw some fan cam videos on Twitter, but my takeaway was that Gabby had much better speed than Kaiya, but all that jumping up and down and hopping in the program was giving an unfinished and unpolished look. Kaiya was slow, but seemed to be painting a nice picture (though her blades were scratchy as heck).

I agree Daleman should have been ahead on PCS though (and it probably shouldn’t have been close), but we all know the PCS game doesn’t always reflect what is happening in reality. Gabby hasn’t been at nationals in 3 seasons. I think some judges are going to take it slow and need to see several good skates before her PCS really start to rise. But I expect if there is a solid free skate here she will be getting a PCS boost.

Gabby was the first skater out. Not that we are on old OBO judging but points can loosen up as the event goes on.

I wanted to try to make it out to Waterloo yesterday but the events I wanted to see most were during the workday. And today had an appointment over lunch so couldn’t see the Pairs which I really wanted to see. Made it over aiming to be in time for Senior Dance and looks like they’re running behind so got to see half of Junior Dance!!

So nice to finally see live competitive skating after nothing since Skate Canada last year I think.

Will be here all day, but will probably skip Junior and Novice Men to get a workout in after sitting on my butt all day watching others workout ;)

Really liked Anderson/Dawson and Homick/Buelow. Loved Homick/Buelow’s program, great chemistry, will be even more impactful with their costumes. They seemed quite pleased with their FD score.

With both the Challenger Series and JGP underway, and the Junior and Senior Pair events cancelled, there aren’t many notable entries scheduled to compete, mainly Justine Miclette and Fée Ann Landry in Senior Women, and Gauthier/Thieren in Senior Dance.

Briere/Lavesque had a decent skate and are leading after the junior RD. Do we know why they didn't get a JGP this year (except as possible substitutes)? Just too many Canadian teams?

Probably because of the limited spots for Canada on the JGP in dance this year - only 7 initially + 2 additional spots when other feds relinquished their spots. With three teams (Anderson/Dawson, Veillon/Brandys & Homick/Buelow) medaling at their first JGPs & aiming to qualify for the JGPF that reduces the # of spots for all the rest of the teams to just 3, which makes it tough for a team that comes on strong after Next Gen.

Lia's SP, score 66.72:

Had to chuckle a little at the opening 2A, someone has been watching Kaori Sakamoto. ;) Still a bit of a leg wrap on the 3Lutz in the combo, but she's looking more comfortable with the choreography than at the NextGen competition. Spins are very well done, good speed and excellent centering.

Junior women short is just on with a few next gen skaters. Currently Victoria Barakhtina is leading with 58 something.. clean program including a triple triple. Quinn Startek is also in this group. Ksenia is in 2nd so far with 50.8? clean program but a triple double.
eta - highly recommend paying the $9 for watching the live video, excellent quality.

okay my favourite of the juniors Hamilton's Quinn Startek, she has lovely glide over the ice and even though she is tiny has decent height and flow with her triple jumps. She puts her whole body into the footwork and has a beautiful smile, lovely artistry and she certainly held her own in such a strong group of juniors today! A clean short (but unlike Victoria a triple/double combo) 57.17 and into 2nd place. Considering she had a triple double that is really a great score. Kaylee in 3rd, Quinn 2nd and Victoria 1st after the shorts.

Quinn has an upcoming international assignment, I believe so that sounds promising :)

I paid for the Skate Ontario stream. The jr pair just finished and they announced that the next event is senior women at 7:20, so I guess Kemp/Elizarov will not be skating their senior programs this weekend. They were the only pair listed for senior.

Thanks for reminder

Brezden has withdrawn (I was looking forward to seeing her). I wonder if she will get an international this year.
Kwon and Medland-Spence are skating though in this group.
