2025 Canadian Spring/Summer/Fall Competitions

Cincon-Debout/Celestino - and we have our first Canadian Macarena of the season! Her dress is a study in hot pink, orange & yellow with a white sheer instead of nude-toned illusion. He's got a black, sheer dress shirt that's open to show the hot pink t-shirt underneath. Okay then.

Carandiucs - he's got a patterned grey/black, short-sleeved dress shirt that's open to a white wifebeater. Another BSB medley. ROUGH twizzles. She's wearing a black shorts-jumpsuit with some silver metallic wide binding around the armholes & v-ing on the front & back, and black tights.

Theroux/Gossard - I'm guessing, yup, another Jock Jams - starts off with "Y'all Ready for This" into "Everybody Dance Now" and the costumes are purple basketball jerseys with flaming orange basketballs on them. They have their names on the back of their jerseys & I think maybe their HS graduation years for the #s?. He's got a white t-shirt under his & black pants, her skirt is purple & nearly knee-length.

In the contest of who had the better Jock Jams costumes, I go with Kalaganis/Deveau. Her dress is GORGEOUS.

Anderson/Dawson - who wanted the Right Said Fred RD this season? "I'm Too Sexy". Next song is "Pretty Fly" and then into "Ice Ice Baby" - omg - this may be my favorite RD of the day even if he did botch his twizzles & isn't necessarily appreciably better with Charlie than he was with his old, Brazilian partner, Catharina.

Actually, I really like their presence on the ice and the confidence they exude. That's part of what makes the RD work, for me, plus the music selection is entertaining & not utterly predictable.

Unfortunately they forgot to turn the sound on for the interview after the RD :(

Now they are having a "re do" :)

I remember seeing Earl Jesse Celestino live in Winnipeg last year and thought they were a fun team and he is super charming and a very engaging entertainer.

Stacked pairs field here today. Luckily, Canada has 3 spots at each JGP, so my expectation is that most of these teams will get at least 1 JGP assignment - and certainly the likely top 3 will get 2.

Quattrochi/Lacasse - "Azul" by Jesse Cook - tango - both are in all black & she's got the requisite red rose in her hair. 2tw - okay, SBS 2a - eh; decent lift; really whippy on the throw 2z - both his throw & her landing. She and Desmarais must have really disliked each other for her to have split with him & teamed with Lacasse. Fine BIDS, decent SBS spins. Nothing remarkable about this team.

Cheung/Lee - basic black with sparkles on his shirt and the torso of her dress - music is the theme from "Batman". Okay 2tw; SBS 2lo - eh; high leg on the landing of the throw 2f; okay BIDS - only base level bc they only got one rotation in; nice lift, he looked very comfortable but she's got to be light as a feather; mess on the SBS spins, step seq is as bland as the music.

Desrochers/Thrasher - another team in all black, but he's sans sparkles. She has a white wristband on one arm. "Meet Me Halfway" by Black Eyed Peas. 3tw good; SBS 2a - landed - no GOE; solid lift; throw 3lz - sloooow entry & she two-footed the landing with her hand scraping the ice which was about the best outcome she could hope for; BIDS l3 - fine; SBS spins - music changed to "Boom Boom Pow" and they were decent; step seq is okay. Oh, she's not in a dress - black shorts unitard with a huge open keyhole back, long sleeves & mock turtleneck.

Dion/Côté - she'd dressed like a tropical bird, he's in a bight aqua dress shirt - "Hip Hip Chin Chin". 2tw - okay; SBS 2a - messy; SBS spins - eh; lift - looked oddly shaky on his part but she stayed steady in the air; throw 2lz - she two-footed the landing & flipped out of it; step seq - as labored as the rest of the teams; I missed their DS. Very green team, though I'm also not seeing a lot of potential.

AKLL - all black for him, her dress skirt & half the bodice is black including one shoulder, the rest is a champagne stoned/sequined that has an illusion neckline. SBS 1a - yikes; fall on the throw 3z - well, this is not a good start; rough lift. Music is "Papaoutai" by Stromae then segues into "Alors on danse". BIDS was fine; SBS spins - eh. Really not the program they wanted at all today. Big hole they're in for the FS, but I can't see them not getting 2 JGP assignments ultimately.

KempEliz - Succession soundtrack; 3tw - okay; SBS 2a - decent; throw 3lz - nice; BIDS good; nice lift; SBS spins - very close, he lost his first position (camel) so they'll get negative GOE; ended well ahead of the music on their step seq & closing pose. Bit rough, but this is a better program than DesThra & if they can stay healthy, they may finally assert themselves as the top Canadian jr pairs team.

ETA - costumes are a purple satin dress shirt for him, matching purple one-shouldered dress for her with sequins/stones all over it & covering a nude strap for the other shoulder.

Wong/Conforti - lilac dress that ombres into a grape color for the skirt that matches his under-shirt; grey sheer dress shirt & black pants for him. SBS 2a - messy; 2tw - it's all about development at this level, right? Throw 2f - decent; fall for her on the lift dismount; SBS spins - alright; BIDS - okay. Music is "Je Te Laisserai Des Mots" cover by Danielle Vega and it's SLOW like this team - they ended behind the music.

Callahan/Furman - she's in emerald green, he's in black; 2tw - ok; I missed their SBS jumps as I was trying to Shazam their music. It's "Suicide Play" by DJ KEM & also a cover of "Fly Me to the Moon" by remorse - some girl singer. They were pleasant, but I was super-distracted trying to figure out the music. Now watching replays... SBS 2a - solid; throw 2 something - bit whippy/open on the landing; lift looked okay; same with the rest of the elements. They may push AKLL out of the final group for the FS.

ETA - nope, they're in 5th by .10!

And here we are with the Jr men!

Vasii - nice 3a to open! "Clair de Lune" is the music, btw. Bit of a lean on his 3z, so he could only get off a 2t for the combo. Nice 3lo. Overall, quite a nice skate despite the near flub on the combo.

Heiderich - 3f+3t to open - nice; 3lo - bit of a lean on the landing but stayed up, 0 GOE; music is something Spanish but I'm too lazy to Shazam; 2a - decent. Score should be in the low 60s at best, IMO.

Chan - 3lo - okay; 2z+3t - well, that's gonna hurt; decent 2a; music is "Run Boy Run" & he's got a bizarre shirt on - one long sleeve, one short-sleeve, blue air-brushing like a Nathan Chen original, but there's some sort of black rope hanging off the short-sleeved shoulder that Nathan would NEVER, same with the black cuff around that wrist, and slashy holes on one knee & the opposite shin of his trousers. He's trying to be Jimmy Ma but is not.

Qin - "Hear My Prayer" by Josh Groban; messy 3z+2t; decent 2a; 3lo - alright. Decent program, nice, flowy presentation. Low 60s?

Paradis - kept last season's SP? Costume is the same, so maybe I'm being fooled. Too lazy to look it up on his ISU bio. 3lo - solid; 2a - good; 3z+3t - low landings on both, but took his time & got them done. Strongest skating skills by far of this first group (with 1 skater to go, of course).

Chebotarov - first name is Petro, so I'm thinking he's of Ukrainian descent. Fall on the combo; came back with a good 3lo; decent 2a.

Canadian Jeffery Chen up next - solid 3z+3t; I know this music but I can't name it off the top of my head; nice 2a; I Shazamed it and went "oh" b/c it's "Limelight" from Chaplin. Meh - I hate Chaplin programs. Decent 3lo. He's a pleasant skater.

Long - good 3a to open! And then he pops his combo into a 2z+3t. Music is a Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Program is fine for what it is. Probably will score around the same as Vasii, maybe a bit higher b/c he's got better skating skills.

Li - 2a decent; 3z+3t - bit wobbly on the landings but stayed up; music is "Gimme Love" by Ed Sheeran. Fall on the 3lo. I like this song, but not for a junior guy who needs more speed & oomph.

ETA - OMG - they put bedazzled music notes on his shirt in silver, magenta & fuchsia to match the splotched tie dye effect.

Luo - two-footed the 3z but got the 2t off; messy 3lo; music is a disco cover called "A Fifth of Beethoven" and now it segues into the Bee Gees "You Should Be Dancing"; decent 2a. At least the music is upbeat, but I really didn't need to revisit last year's RD theme so soon.

Howes - 3lo - foot down on the landing; 3z+3t - messy, two-foot landing on the 3t, probably will get at least < on review; okay 2a; music is bland orchestral which I shall not Shazam.
