2025 Canadian Spring/Summer/Fall Competitions

I don't know why coaches give their young teams all these boring warhorses. And I really don't know why anyone gave Layla that awful dress. They're skating very well, though.

Decent program for Veillon/Brandys - doesn't really go anywhere, so it's a little too one-note for my taste, but they did pretty well for as early in the season as it is.

I don't know why coaches give their young teams all these boring warhorses.
Because it's an Olympic season so they're saving their best ideas for their senior teams? Don't disabuse me of that notion. I have to believe CarPon are getting the best material that IAM-O has to offer. ;)
And I really don't know why anyone gave Layla that awful dress.
I think I find his shirt more atrocious.

Whoops, I missed the first team. I was listening to one of my fave podcasts' mini-eps that dropped earlier this morning. I feel like I missed nothing, though, in that I was heartily unimpressed with Wong/Conforti in the SP yesterday.

Okay, now time for the real contenders for JGP spots.

Callahan/Furman - 2tw - small & hesitant; she's fallen on both SBS jumping passes - 3lo and 2a, so no combo; throw 3s - lean on the landing but stayed up; BIDS - makes sense they only have one DS in their arsenal since I believe he's new to pairs. His costume is really unflattering - it's a long-sleeved tunic with a belt wrapped around his waist & it just makes him look thick. Throw 2z - okay; lifts were fine for a new team; pairs spin was meh.

AKLL - she's in mint green & he's in black. 2tw - good; she pops their first SBS - 1s; she's a mess on the 2nd SBS jumping pass - 1a+seq; throw 3z - down she goes. They have to be dealing with some sort of injury to be skating this poorly both yesterday & today. Good lift; alright on the BODS; throwaway choreo seq; last lift is strong enough; throw 3s - at least one hand down on the landing for her, may have been both.

Quattrochi/Lacasse - 2tw - over his shoulder on the landing; SBS 2a - she flipped out of the landing; 1st lift - solid; throw 2z - okay; BODS - also okay; random fall for her on a transition; SBS 2z+2lo+1a - got them done; 2nd lift - also quite solid; decent choreo seq; throw 3s - good; pairs spin - slow like the music. This should keep them in 3rd at worst given how poorly AKLL skated.

KempEliz - 3tw - good; SBS 3s+1a+1a good; SBS 3t - she flipped out on the landing but held on; music is Clair de Lune; throw 3z - she put her foot down really fast on the landing but stayed up; good 1st lift; throw 3lo - solid; pairs spin - slow exit but otherwise fine; 2nd lift - solid. Really, their matching lines outclass the rest of this field & I'll be annoyed if they don't win. Yeah, yeah, I know DesThra still have to skate, but I'm biased & always have been for this team, lol.

DesThra - hey, he's got gold sparkles on his shoulders & black ones along the neckline; she's in a black unitard with an inverted v cutout on the front & gold sparkles along the neckline & armholes. 3tw - fine; throw 3lo - down she goes; SBS 3s - down she goes; 1st lift - solid; and she's down again on the SBS 2a, so no combo; BODS - good; 2nd lift - also quite solid; throw 3s - and down she goes one last time.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure Canada has a good use for all 12 of the JGP spots they've earned in pairs. I can't see any strong argument for sending any but the top 4 out, and while I'm sure AKLL & DesThra will get 2, based on their last season's results, these were not encouraging skates from them today.

I am also very biased for Kemp/Eliz as a Manitoban born and bred and I know what it takes to make it even to the national stage. Eliz's former coach coached my son years ago and I do recall not so many years ago her fund raising to finance her promising skater to Challenge or something. A bit of money well spent.

Chan & Li have had rough times of it and Bondar continues his climb up the ranks from 9th - still in 1st with 4 skaters to go.

ETA - and Bondar will finish no worse than 4th. Time to see what Vasii, Long & Paradis can do with their substantial leads over the rest of this field.

Last edited:
Vasii - popped the 4s into a 2s; good 3a+2a; down on the 2nd 3a though; 3z+2t with turns between the Lz & T; wonky, leaned back landing on the 3lo; solid 3F; two-footed 3z - this program is jump-jump-jump; choreo seq eh - could be exciting with the Russian splits & choreo slide, but he's sort of gassed here near the end. He had an 11pt lead on Bondar from the SP, but he gave up WAY too much in TES today to hold him off. Should be enough to remain in the top 4.

Long - 3a - very nice; 3lo - missed it, had -.5 GOE; 3f+3t - excellent; 2z+2a+2a; he's starting to fall apart or the lutz is his nemeis - 1z; 3s - solid; I feel like I missed at least one jumping pass, but I know I didn't b/c I have 6 jumping passes listed.

I was wrong about Vasii dropping behind Bondar, so I won't predict where Long will wind up, though his TES makes me think it'll be behind both of them, but who knows?

ETA - yup, I was wrong again. I'm wondering if the TES is dropping off the screen before the last element is entered, which is throwing my predictions off.

The new Dvorak program for Anthony is very nice, but he's having a lot of pops and a couple of random falls. I'm not sure his usual shredded-shirt look really fits the program.

Paradis - I blame Paul Poirier for this open-back costume. The shredded white chiffon is all Anthony, but the open back is Paul's fault. 3z+3t good; 3a - fall; 1f+1eu+3s; back on track with a solid 2a; but then he pops the 2nd lutz; 3f - good; 3lo+1a; random falls (two) in his choreo seq - the 2nd might not be called a fall - he put his hand down as he sort of slid/tripped across the ice! What a hot mess.

Well, Skate Canada should give the top 4 here 1 GP each and not guarantee a 2nd assignment until after they see how these guys do at their first assignments.

Big music for a tiny skater, but Lia did well with it.
Lia's FP on Youtube: https://youtu.be/B2Z4LsM4dPM?si=LS0qFdOm8JEB3p4b

Her expression and ability to interpret music is remarkable for a not quite 13 year old. And again, this is her first competition of the season, the program is only going to grow from here. 🤯

There are a number of other videos from the NextGen competition uploaded on the same YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLa1NBLdskaEXE84fxGQFV9VCFQUtence6&si=_JeAcuLHGw6HrorC

They can keep this FP forever as far as I'm concerned. I've been waiting for what feels like forever for someone to skate an entire FP to Clair de Lune, and this one is perfection. :swoon: Still pinching myself that our tiny skating community could produce a team that's not just competitive, but good.

Should anyone be hanging out in arena to beat the heat, any onsite reports would be appreciated!
I’m here! Working, so might not be able to provide much in the way of jump id or tech.

Donovan just skated to his Hip Hip Chin Chin SP from last season. His opening quad (toe?) looked improved. 3A was ok and then popped his 3-3 to a 2-3 with a messy landing. 78.59 is what I heard.

For anyone coming to watch (@victorskid?) - we’re running about 20 mins late because the Zamboni broke down during the first flood of the day.

I may drop over later - thanks for the timing update & Donovan info :)

If I do get there for a while today or tomorrow, don't expect any "tech" info from me.

Minsol was the clear top skater in the jr women - very nice program to Bond music. She looks very grown up from last time I saw her (Jr Worlds in Calgary). 61-something for score. I think her 3-3 was clean but I imagine they looked at the rotation on her loop.
