I liked the American Beauty soundtrack and I remember at the time I hoped skaters would use it but it never caught on.

We balance each other out. I really like the song and am surprised I didn't guess it. I couldn't even name you a song from "American Beauty." Since they're Americans training in Canada, it's cool if they are performing to a song written and originated by Canadians and performed by an American.

Of course, whether I like their RD is a different question.

I think it's a little puzzling and more than a little funny that Americans think it's a patriotic song. Tara Lipinski used as an American flag draped post 9-11 show program.

I think a lot of Americans realize that it is not a patriotic song. (Well, in a way, the original was patriotic re Canada.) Tara was a kid.

I remember a funny conversation I had with a former boss. He thought Kelly Clarkson's "Because if You" was a generic love song until he noticed the look on my face. It's about the childhood abuse/neglect she experienced from her father btw

The Guess Who basically came up with "American Woman" live onstage after a tour in the US that they didn't particularly enjoy. In an interview, Burton Cummings once said that what he really was trying to say was "Canadian Woman I Like You Better." Not sure, what that means for an 1990s-themed RD and an Olympics taking place in Italy, but yeah a lot of people don't listen to lyrics. I'm not super fond of the Kravitz's cover but no doubt Madison Chock will have her diva face A-game on when C&B take to the Milan ice.

I'm pretty good at catching lyrics quickly, but otherwise that's what Google is for.

I think Tara said at the time that her program was a tribute to American female athletes. Yeah, not quite what the song was about.

C/B are older, I would think they would understand the lyrics and probably figure, it's just a song, the theme is 90s music, and they want to stand out. Which all makes sense. But in our current climate, I'm not sure an American protest song is a great idea....hopefully the Oly audience won't be paying attention to the lyrics or care.

I mean, I think many people legit don't listen to lyrics. As someone whose very much a lyrics person, I've learned that a lot of people lean more towards vibe and sound than lyrics. It's not a wrong way to understand music, but it does end up with interesting misunderstandings like people constantly having small children dance to Don't Stop Me Now.

There also are people who think that Hozier's "Take Me to Church" is a religious song.

I'm guessing that most of the audience won't perceive the song as a protest song. Chock and Bates would be using the Lenny Kravitz version, which he recorded for an Austin Powers movie, not as a protest song. As far as I recall, Kravitz did not promote the song as a protest song, and it was not perceived the way the original was during the Vietnam War. Aside from a couple of lines, the song's lyrics don't come across as a protest song (though also not as a patriotic American song). And they can't use the entire song anyway due to RD time limits so those lines might not even be in there.

I think a more common reaction to C/B's use of the song would be to think it's funny that Evan is telling his wife to stay away from him.

Aaron Lewis from Staind just recently made comments about how dare Springsteen write such an unAmerican song and I'm like, dude where were you 40 years ago? Speaking of, I'm rather certain I remember having a "Born in the USA" t-shirt when I was a little kid. I need to look and see if I can find a picture.

I took it as replacing religious devotion with sex. Which is like partially religious, yeah?

The Lenny Kravitz version is just a straightforward rock song. I just recall Heather Graham dancing sexy in the video. She's American and rather come-hither so not really close to the original at all.

Not that it really matters, but Tara did this program in the 1999/2000 season, so it wasn’t created as a 9/11 tribute. She did do a tribute program in the 2001/2002 stars on ice tour, but it wasn’t American Woman.

I’d love to see them mix in “It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over” which was on The Cutting Edge soundtrack so it fits nicely

In 11th grade a friend of mine was alway singing it (badly, tbh) and another friend, a real metalhead, once lost it and said (jokingly, but angrily): "Because of you I'm gonna freak out and tear you into pieces."
My fondest memory of that song.

It's C/B and IAM, they may have it mixed with 5-10 more pieces.

I guess they could try and make it ironic, but I don't think that would be the easiest thing to interpret.

Regardless, I don't think the lyrics are particularly deep, but the beat is good and it's an earworm piece that's very different from what other teams are doing.

I always think that if someone is "malade" = sick, it is better to stay at home and not infect others
