2025–26 Canadian Women: News and Updates

Michael Hopfes
Read more about him (and the rest of the coaches) on the Barrie Skating Club site:
Oooh...Michael Hopfes of the incredible step sequences...but alas, not of the incredible jumping. OTOH, sometimes coaches who struggled with jumps are the best coaches. I hope so.

I really enjoyed his skating. Glad he's still engaged in the sport.

Congratulations to Sara Maude Dupuis for winning the Challenger event in Warsaw! She landed the triple axel on one foot, fully rotated with a final GOE of -0.16 (range of -1 to +1 from individual judges). This sets up a fantastic show down at nationals for the Olympic spot.
It really does, she now has a very similar score to Maddie in total internationally so it will be a show down at Nationals. I think they both now have 188 total? Sara Maude needs to also work on her other jumps as she can often get dinged for under rotation on her lutz, whereas Maddie is usually very clean. Certainly will be an exciting finish to the season.

I actually just watched Sara Maude’s program and except for the triple axel the rest of the elements are not at the same level as Maddie. Also Maddie’s program is with errors and still ahead so I think Maddie will still be ahead with body of work. But we shall see.

I did not find the maude full program.

Osmond versus Dalman was the great womens competition now that is sorely missed now.

Unless Schizas has a major meltdown at Nationals, I can't see Dupuis beating her. Yes, she has a triple axel... but her overall skating is not overly intricate...she can do the jumps, but there isn't a lot to her programs. Her SP this year is a good choice for her, but I think her LP is really lacking unfortunately..imo. :-(

Dupuis has already finished ahead of Schizas in two of the last three 4CCs. I don’t think Schizas even has to melt down completely for Sara Maude to still be in the picture.

Well, if this were an international panel instead of a domestic panel, I'd agree. Plus, Sara-Maude has had some exceptionally good outings at 4CCs in recent years, which have been a stark contrast to her Nationals outings only weeks earlier. I agree with the folks who think Maddie has the edge, however, we've also seen Maddie choke at Nats in recent years, so there is an opening there for someone like Sara-Maude to skate through and onto the Olympic team.
