Starting a new thread from the Kiss & Cry NQS/Club Comp thread...

The 2024-25 International Assignments and Results is now up

Very very interesting... I'm curious about some of the choices the USFS made with their CS and B competition budget...

CS Cranberry Cup Int'l
CS John Nicks Int'l
CS Lombardia
CS Nebelhorn
CS Denis Ten Memorial - CarPon or GreenP need to request this since they have late GP debuts and this will set them up well with generous scoring ;)
CS Budapest Trophy
**skipping CS Trophee Metropole Nice CDA (same week as SkAm - bit surprised they're skipping this and going to Denis Ten instead given the likely difference in travel costs)
**skipping CS Nepela Memorial (a bit surprised at this since it's before Sectionals)
**skipping CS Tallinn Trophy (not surprising - this falls right during Sectionals)
CS Warsaw Cup
CS Golden Spin

Bavarian Open
Egna Dance Trophy
Challenge Cup

I don't get the Denis Ten over Nice either. Not only are there travel costs to consider, but Kazakhstan is obviously way further: longer trip, more jet lag, more time to recover for skaters. That being said, Denis Ten has been on their initial list of competitions before (I believe in the last Olympic season) and they didn't end up sending anyone, so we'll see what actually happens.

The 4CCs doc doesn't state when the selections will be made but there's some language in there (pg 3 - paragraph (B)) that makes me think they will be making the 4CCs selection at Nats - which makes sense given there is more time between the two comps this season than there was this past year.

The worlds selection procedure basically involves then getting a pool of 5+ athletes using nationals results and a formula and then… doing literally whatever they want from that pool.

I don’t know if there’s the appropriate thread to ask this yet but when can we expect the cranberry entrants to be announced? It’s only three weeks away. Can you believe it? It’s almost here..

Entries are due tomorrow per the ISU release and since it's a Challenger event the entries should hopefully be on the ISU website next week.

There needs to be a rule that no Challenger can be held before September this is ridiculous holding a Challenger in August.

The timing of Cranberry is useful to help the US Fed complete the lineup for international assignments. I think not all slots have been filled up after the Junior Cup, and they need that competition to make the decision

Definitely - it's a good opportunity for those men and women who want a shot at those SkAm TBD host spots to make their case for selection.

I noticed today that USFS has added a few more fall competitions to their international assignments page:
Tayside Trophy
CS Trophée Metropole Nice
CS Tallinn Trophy
Santa Claus Cup
Tayside Trophy - Singles & Pairs - Sr, Jr & Advanced Novice
CS Trophee Metropole Nice - Singles & Dance; concurrent non-CS - Pairs & Jr All Disciplines
CS Tallinn Trophy - Singles & Dance; concurrent non-CS - Jr & Advanced Novice Singles & Dance
Santa Claus Cup - Jr & Advanced Novice Dance

Also note that the following CS events have concurrent non-CS events:
CS Denis Ten Memorial - Singles & Ice Dance/Jr Singles & Dance
CS Budapest Trophy - Singles & Dance/Pairs & Jr All Disciplines
CS Golden Spin of Zagreb - Sr & Jr All Disciplines

According to the ISU Events Page CS Warsaw Cup does not have a concurrent non-CS event and is only Sr All Disciplines

Note that many of these events are "pay on your own" types. USFS is giving skaters more opportunities to get international experience without costing them money.

Hence, you start to see gofundmes of skaters competing in the above events. I have seen 2 skaters with some sort of fundraising to support their participation in Nice

I was curious to find out who had been assigned, so sought out these fundraisers. I found Jessica Jurka's, who else is going to Nice? Since she's competing as a Junior, it seems like they should add a line for the non-CS Nice event.

Last season when the Jr & Adv Novice skaters were sent to the non-CS events held in conjunction with the CS, the Int'l Assignments page denoted if they were jr or adv nov in parentheses behind their name. I presume they will do the same this season. And when they sent Kam/O'Shea to the non-CS pairs competition at IceChallenge in 2022, it was noted that it was a non-CS for them also, so I expect the same will happen this year for any sr pairs at Budapest Trophy or Trophee Metropole Nice.

For at least the past two seasons, USFS has had a footnote at the bottom of the assignments page for this purpose:
*Competing at event held in conjunction with the Challenger Series.

The asterisk was used for Kam/O'Shea at 2022 Ice Challenge, where senior pairs was not part of the Challenger event -- as Karen discussed above.
The asterisk was used also for junior Higase-Chen at 2023 Budapest Trophy, for example.

Logan is who I was thinking of from last season, I just didn't mention her by name, lol.

Now is the time for clubs and fans to support the skaters. The average cost of an international skating event trip is approx $5K USD. Every little bit helps.

More opportunities for a cash-strapped skating family to go broke. Not everyone has a network of friends and family to lean on. But you can't say no, because what if doing so keeps you from getting other opportunities down the road.

Skate Canada has been doing this for awhile and not surprisingly, it seems it's usually the same batch of skaters that are taking the opportunity because of affordability. It's a double edged sword. You get more skaters out for international experience but it is definitely not a situation of equal opportunity as not everyone can afford to send their skaters and coaches to an international competition on their own dime.

CS Denis Ten Memorial entries -

Men - Goku Endo, Daniel Martynov
Women - Starr Andrews
Ice Dance - Oona Brown/Gage Brown, Isabella Flores/Iban Desyatov

There is no pairs at this event.

There is a concurrent Jr event but I haven't seen the entries for that yet so we don't know if any Team USA juniors are also going (presumably this would be one of those pay-your-own-way opportunities for them).

You are correct, Captain. I have issues with the program but on the other hand it spreads the opportunities that would not be available as USFS doesn't have the money to do it all.

Tayside Trophy entries are available on their Sportity app - https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aa...4-49c05d64f40c?viewer!megaVerb=group-discover

The US is sending a large compliment of skaters/teams in all fields:

Senior Men - William Annis, Joonsoo Kim, Yaroslav Paniot
Senior Women - Alex Evans, Brooke Gewalt
Senior Pairs - Naomi Williams/Lachlan Lewer (this is a really strong field with Conti/Macii, Danilova/Tsiba, the Kovalevs, and Vaipan-Law/Digby also competing)

Junior Men - Caleb Farrington, Kirk Haugeto, Zachary LoPinto
Junior Women - Sofia Bezkorovainaya, Jiaying Ellyse Johnson, Sophie Joline von Felten
Junior Pairs - Saya Carpenter/Jon Maravilla, Addyson McDanold/Aaron Felberbaum, Reagan Moss/Jakub Galbavy

USFS approach is win-win: opening more opportunities for other skaters to compete internationally while not being too much of a financial drain
