2023 World Team Trophy Day 2

I'm gonna laugh if Amber lands a clean 3A and ANL isn't here to celebrate it live.

ETA - well, I'm not laughing, but that was a pretty credible attempt.

trust me, I thought about this so much but I had so much work to do today that I knew I had to call it quits after the pairs

Haien Lee's second half 3F was called q & ! (her only element of 12 that received negative GOE -1.14); all level 4s.

Kaori's 2A+3T< fall was her only element with negative GOE.

Yelim: opening 3Lz+3T<; great to see her so happy afterwards!

Isabeau: opening 3Lz+3Lo<; all level 4s.

Mai had 3 underrotations called: 3Lz+3T<, and second half 2A+3T< & 3Lz<+2T+2Lo.

Amber 3A< 6.40 base value -2.93 GOE = 3.47 points. Already looking forward to seeing her land 3A cleanly next season, finally! :)

After Worlds, I was super excited about finally seeing the whole WTT event and Day 1 was fun but Day 2… I am so over all of these programs. I’ve seem and heard them enough, let’s move on.

The shining bright spots for me have been Jason’s and Ilia’s short programs. I also laughed at Ilia all in on Jason’s cheering/dance moves but giving his mom side eye for doing just a few moves to accompany him. (It was Day 1, I know but I’m trying to add positives).

Love the cheering choreographies of Team South Korea and their video too amd enjoyed the performance of their dance and pairs teams, because they were brand new to me amd they did a great job.

Will always have a soft spot for Daisuke and I really enjoy his partnership with Kana, but that POTO is done, done, done. I hope they won’t be, however. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

ISU's Day 2 recap: https://www.isu.org/figure-skating/...airs-and-ice-dance-victories?templateParam=15
Captain Jason on his role:
“I think the biggest thing with kind of being a leader is about bringing the team together and creating this unity,” he explained.
“So often we're so focused on what we need to do as athletes, and especially on competition day. But then in those times in between, it's about coming together, supporting one another.
“We have a group text with the entire team that goes back and forth, sharing pictures, sharing good luck wishes. I had Team USA shirts made, matching shirts for the whole team and hats. So just kind of bringing the team together, getting them excited, rallying behind one another.
“You could see in the kiss and cry, we just have such a blast cheering one another on.”
Captain Junhwan:
“And wow, Team Korea, what they showed me today was amazing. And not because of the score or how they skate, but when they're skating, I can feel their enjoyment and happiness. They showed me great energy and fighting spirit. I was so happy for them and I'm so proud of them today. [...]
“I was thinking how can I support my teammates”, Cha said.
“I was just thinking of making something fun and I gave them a lot of ideas. From the start we can made some videos together and we can talk about how we're going to cheer for each skater and what we are going to do at the kiss and cry.”
Captain Kaori:
“The role of the captain is very important and challenging to take on for the first time. First, I wondered if I could fulfill the role and thought about how a captain should be. Skaters are usually nervous before they get on the ice, so the captains are the people who should be pushing and supporting and saying good luck.
“I have my own character and own way of trying to cheer up others around me. I have to exert my strength and at the same time I have to look around and link in to the other skaters' situation and that's difficult. It's a good experience to take the role as a captain,” she continued.

Day 3 of competition begins Saturday at 15:15 in Tokyo/2:15 am Eastern time with the Pairs FS.

looking at the results after day two with only two more disciplines to go with the men’s free and the pairs free, the standings are interesting. Korea is in second place by a point, and I did not think Canada would be in last place and I think they will stay there. Does anyone think that Korea can stay in second place over Japan?

and does anyone think that France can stay in the lead over Italy?

That’s pretty unlikely since Japan has a top notch pairs team and Korea’s will place sixth.

and does anyone think that France can stay in the lead over Italy?
It could be close depending on how the men do.

France can absolutely stay in the lead over Italy.

Japan and Korea is a more interesting situation... Cho/Adcock are a complete unknown when it comes to the FS, so who knows how they will skate or if they can beat a flawed program from Les Kovs. Safe to bet that they're not going to finish higher than 5th in the FS, whereas MiuKih are likely to finish 1st or 2nd. That will give Japan 4-5 points alone, right there and move them ahead of Korea. So, it will come down to the Men. Lee, Tomono and Sato all underperformed in the SP and it's possible that Cha could beat Ilia as he did at Worlds. Is it possible that Korea could scrape out a win? Sure. Is it likely? Probably not, but this is going to be a lot closer than I think anyone anticipated at the start of Day 1.

Well, I don't know that it's certain Cho/Adcock will finish 6th. Les Kovs have had some incredibly poor FS this season. But, ChoAd are a complete mystery, so who knows what they'll be able to deliver in the FS.

I finally caught up on all this and it's been both interesting and a mess haha. I'm glad Alexa girlbossed her way to a season's best in her last short program outing. Also I'm really happy that Ilia and Isabeau in particular went to this. They seem to be having a blast, and I think it's good for them to remember that this is fun sometimes hahaha.

I'm caught up through the the first group of Women. I had no idea that Cho was that tiny (from seeing her in the team box), because she skates big, and they were wonderful.

Lots of wonderful performances, and Pairs were a highlight for me. Fantastic for Knierim/Frazier!

My favorite moment though was, watching Takahashi watch Yelim Kim with laser focus, after which he was on his feet after she finished her program.

I started this wanting Team Japan to win, but now I am Team Korea for the win. Trying to get a quick nap in before the final day. I am sure my Team Canada will be last :(. I had hoped for bronze, wishful thinking on my part.

Nahhhhh... no need to be quite so heavy-handed. The Russian FS press, fans and insiders can attempt to claim him all they want, but they look pretty dumb when he's clearly into the whole Team USA thing at WTT, lol.
Russia needs to grasp at anything to try to feel good about itself and forget about its toxicity as a nation.

Thank you Peacock for making my Friday evening with WTT replay day 2. I’m enjoying this event so much!

Pairs short:

Who are these Canadian/Koreans? Amazing debut. Stellato Dudek/Deschamps…so refined and devine. Glad they placed in third, even though I like the Italians too. Japanese team did great. I figured Alexa and Brandon would make a mistake but they didn’t. So deserved first place. I thought they were underscored much of the season relative to the Japanese. I see them as very closely matched teams but with Brandon and Alexa having more complex programs and choreography.

Dance:

The Koreans free dance is great! Still love the Kana/Dai energy. Italians really brought it. I think they are slightly hurt slightly by the lack of smoothness in their skating….kind of a bobbing, bouncy quality. But wow for their acrobatic moves and creativity with them. Chock and Bates so smooth and seamless and Madison sells the hell out of anything. I really enjoyed the free dance here…and no random fall 😂

Women’s free:

Yelim Kim amazing redemption skate. I would have had her placed first with the best combination of refinement and great jump technique and program. I really like Kaori but I’m getting VERY tired of overscoring with falls, wild jump technique and very obvious improper take off edges. Give her a ton of points for skating skills but so much of the rest looks sloppy to me. And I really like her! I would have had her behind Levito who had an underotation but the rest of her program was so much more well done than Kaori’s. Haien I loved in the short but this POTO in the last minute or so was just unattractive stiff flailing, windmilling arms, one of my biggest pet peeves. She does not need that!! But I love her new found confidence since 4CC’s and generally really enjoy her skating. The Korean women really have good jump technique. What a force they suddenly are!

So happy to see Korea having so much fun and doing so well in their first WTT. Korean Kiss and cry antics are so fun. I also loved the secret service looking guys dragged into Kaori’s kiss and cry. And Ilia seems to have been out for the whole thing today…and throughly enjoying it…so good on him! Team USA is on fire here….too bad not so much at Worlds.

My take away and highlight from this event is how well Korea did overall. That pair team was not bad and I love their ice dance team and how well they fit in a senior competition. I imagine ice dance politics will give them a hard time for a few years but this team really impresses me.

I’m behind with everything but just wanted to say I really enjoyed the free dance. Specifically, it was great to see Lopareva/Brissaud skate so well after their problems at Worlds. I loved how they really pushed with their speed and passion and were nicely (and rightly) rewarded by the judges. I love this team & can’t wait to see what they do next.

I thought Chock/Bates skated a clear cut above everyone else. Their professionalism and consistent high performance level have impressed all season. They raised their level from Worlds IMO, which was great to see. I do suspect that they may continue, because Madison especially just seems to love competing right now. And they’re skating great, so why quit? OTOH, if they want to step away on a high note, this would obviously be the perfect time.

Guignard/Fabbri very good as well, although the more I see this FD, the more I feel that it was a missed opportunity. One too many music cuts IMO, diluting the mood/storyline. It starts off strongly but doesn’t really build.

Enjoyed Piper/Paul, it was nice to see their Evita program one more time. Definitely one of the programs I’ll remember most from their career. Their overall level seemed not quite as high as Worlds.

I thought Muramoto/Takahashi showed great interpretation, but I do question if Dai can go much further with his dance technique at this point. I sort of suspect they may retire; ending after these 2 big home events seems a perfect good-bye. If they do, I’ll miss seeing Kana. Just as a performer, she’s been one of my favorites these last 2 quads— a great talent imo. (As I watched, I was thinking back to when I saw both Guignard/Fabbri and Muramoto/Reed live for the first time at Skate America 2016 in Chicago. How far they’ve all come since then! I remember being very interested in both teams, seeing them live. Chris 💔).

Good senior debut for Lim/Quan, but it’s a reminder that, however good teams look on the junior stage, it’s still a big jump to seniors. I’m not as big a fan of their Danse Macabre FD as many others are. Hannah’s expression is interesting yet, at the same time, almost a little distracting and OTT at times (for me).

Decent pairs SP, I enjoyed Alexa/Brandon’s Separate Ways, nice to see a clean skate from them. Really hoping to see better material for Miura/Kihara next season. Their programs this year are so dull. I cannot work up any interest, as much as I admire them technically.

The rules for the Olympic TE are flawed in a different way with the SP having a far greater impact on the points than the FS. Additionally, who is to say how badly off Korea will be in another 3 years in either pairs or dance compared to Japan. I think LimQuan can easily close the points disadvantage they currently have against KanaDai and their scores here indicate they would already beat KoKo. ChoAd scored 60+ in the SP with ZERO prior international exposure, and they'd have scored better if they were from a larger fed with any sort of pairs presence.
Thank you for the analysis, but am I the only one who finds these abbreviated surname combinations confusing? Choad, Koko?

Oh, there are people who gripe, but the majority of people seem to prefer these rather than just initials or the hassle of typing out full names.

I'm not sure, with an event with only 6 dance teams and 6 pairs teams why anyone would have any trouble figuring out who is meant by the abbreviated surname combos.

I see. I should have said "distracting" instead of "confusing".
