2023 Eurovision Grand Final - It’s CRAZY! It’s PARTY!

Am going to go against popular opinion here. It might have been more interesting to have Finland win, but Loreen is a really good singer and Tattoo is a good song. It was in my top 5 since I first heard all the songs for the first time.
I don't think her song is bad at all and better than most. I actually like it more than Finland, though it's clearly not as camp. I just didn't understand why soooo many of the jurors thought she was the best. Also, I can understand why some people think the result should just be by popular vote.

Well, it used to be 100% public vote, but the traditional Eurovision countries complained about all the Eastern European countries dominating the televoting so juries were brought in to balance things out.

Finland won the televote, Norway in second place. there was nothing to complain about

I mean in the end that is probably why she won tonight. She won the jury and was at least top three with the public right? I might hate the result but in the end the problem is Finland didn't do well with the juries, too many giving them no points. 🤷‍♀️

I suppose that's like American Idol. Voters in the South dominate the voting. It's harder to win if you're from another part of the country or don't sing a particular type of music or fit a kind of mold. Even if you're very talented. Adam Lambert is a pretty good example of that.

For those new to watching the results aren't really that hard to understand once you know the nuances etc.. Throughout the night I had a good idea where the 12 pts were going to when you can see the list of where they gave their other jury votes. It's not rigged for Sweden. Sweden tends to put through songs that do well with juries and the criteria they vote and many are quite traditional in their thinking. Acts like Finland need a more open minded jury who can recognise what is new/fresh/exciting.

When it comes to the entries we send I knew this year we needed a jury vote to have a hope in hell and sneaking into the final. Other years with other acts it's the opposite.
Am happy to report I made a small little profit off Italy. Always votes for a handsome man with a good voice singing in Italian.
It's a shame I don't gamble because I didn't even know his song before this week and as soon as I heard him sing I was in. Sage advice there

I know. But it has long been clear that the audience is doing their job just fine. Unlike the jury.
Sweden finished second in the televote so it's not like it was completely unpopular. A lot of people across Europe voted for it as well.

I didn't understand the nuances of voting and still don't. It wasn't explained. They just talked about 12 points. Nothing about other jury votes.

I think I should just watch Eurovision the way I watch ice dance. Don't even try to understand the scoring and just enjoy.

But, aren't people more likely to vote for someone they already know and like from a previous Eurovision contest?

My girls, who are huge fans of Loreen, felt it was a reputation win overall. Their party ranked in order: Finland, Norway, France, Italy. Sweden didn't really hit with the Canadians in the crowd but again for my girls she is iconic.

The jury votes were all shown on the screen while they called each country. The country rep only announces who gets the 12 points while the rest are shown on the screen. So, for instance, when San Marino was calling in I could see that they hadn't given any points yet to Italy so I knew Italy was getting their 12 points because I know San Marino will give Italy some points.

But yes, probably best to stop watching once the show is done and just google later on to see who won ;)

The voting in Eurovision is actually quite simple. There are two sets of votes that each country has - the jury and the public. Each award 12 to their favourite, 10 to their second, 8 to their third and so on 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

The jury points from each country are presented first. Then the public points from all the countries are combined and awarded in the order the countries ranked with the juries from the lowest to the highest.

Each national jury is made up of music professionals so they will reward different things than the general public.

Absolutely, it can be a positive, but this is only the second time a former winner has come back to win the contest again.

This is maybe not the best description but for those struggling but when it comes to Eurovision and Loreen, Loreen is like Beyonce. I love Beyonce but I was not a fan of her latest album. For some they won't care because she is still Beyonce.

They still haven't released the votes from the semis which is really unusual. I want to find out that Ireland was last in Semi 1 so I can go to bed.
I was going to ask you the same thing. Do I stay up or just go to sleep now.

Iceland weren't last in Semi 2 though. That would be San Marino. ;)
I am curious to see where she ended up though as I noticed after she performed she moved up two spots in the odds.
But in general I just like to see how everyone voted all around.
