2022 Skate Canada Challenge - Dec. 1-5 2021

Nam kind of ran hot and cold in his LP.

Fall on 4s, very nice 3a-eu-3s, 1a big pop...most of his other jumps were good, but he stepped out of a 3lz.

Could have been better, but also could have been much worse.

After the SP, I wanted Corey to go back to dance but now I'm back to okay, he can stay in singles as I enjoyed his freeskate.

And Nam probably knows his Olympic dreams are dying FAST

Matthew Markell is such an amazingly expressive skater. I really wish he had the harder jumps.

If I'm remembering correctly though, I think he does his own choreo? He definitely has a future as a choreographer if so.

I want Markell to switch to pairs. If Deanna can do it in her 30s, he can do it in his 20s. Yes I know, guys are different but still.

Matthew Newnham - ambitious music for someone who looks about 15. I thought he was drinking from a bottle of milk in the K'n'C.
:)
Bennet Toman - OK performance, popped the axel. I remember a few years ago he fell 5 times in one program but never gave up. They all have milk bottles...

Beres Clements - slow, 3 falls. Brutal marks...no milk bottle for him!

Aleksa Rakic: decent attempt at 4T, not so good with the 3A. Skates at one speed, no matter what the tempo is. Landing stuff though.

Be nice if the tracker went green when they had positive GOE.

Gogolev looks great. Kind of squeaked out the 4s, but no major errors, and two 3a.

He looks way better than I was expecting, considering we've barely seen him at all in the last 2 years (and he's about 2 feet taller!).

Stephen Gogolev - level has gone up a few notches! 3Z, 4S, 3A, 3F-euler-3T, 3A -2T, 3L. Wow. Could use more speed.

Joseph Phan - well, two jumps knocked him out of first, will he stay in the top three?

That was really meh from Phan.

My random highlights of the day as I recover from my surgery on my sofa:

1. Final flight of pre-novice pairs
2. Team from Winnipeg winning novice pairs-sorry, blanking on their names
3. Fabbri & Ayer!
4. Stephen Gogolev!

Good night and I guess see everyone tomorrow for LOTS of LADIES (jr and sr)!!

The schedulers at this event didn't plan very well--at least they are giving Bruce Waddell a chance to make it in sr mens by submitting a video even though he's over in the other rink for jr dance!
No Bruce was suppose to be at the JGP final. You can only get a bye in the discipline that you have the international in. ( due to Jessica Dube getting a bye in singles then only doing the short at Canadians when they made the GP final in pair) They videotaped Bruce from Sections where he skated but wasn’t marked. The judges watched the video at the beginning of each event and marked him.

Oh wonderful - I think Gogolev was my fave Canadian skater for a while and I was sad when he went MIA. Does he have all the necessary minimums for the Olympics?

Yes, he got them and Worlds FS at Warsaw Cup and just lacks the Worlds SP minimum.

Woohoo the senior women's short program first warmup group is on the ice. This might be my favourite competition of the season. I wish the junior women's wasn't happening at the same time...

Not a great skate for Dupuis, the first skater with international experience to go in this field. Turns between the 3T on the combo then down, not clean on the flip and even -GOE on one of her spins. She won the virtual challenge last year in jr and was on the JGP this year. Second 3T was probably downgraded from replay.

Yay for former Team NextGen member Leah Lee skating well! :) Now that's a "Take On Me"/a-ha female cover that's new to me!

ETA: 55.06 - 3T+2T, 3S & 2A all called clean in her interim protocol.

Emily Millard is another former Team NextGen member competing in Sr.

Lee was delightful. I enjoyed that music and her expression! She did the two easiest triples but put up some good TES points.
