2022 Japan Open, October 8 + Carnival on Ice gala

Quotes from Shoma Uno re. Ilia Malinin's 7-quad jump layout: https://olympics.com/en/news/figure-skating-japan-open-preview
Uno conceded he is not going anywhere near the quad Axel - "it's not realistic for me" - but was inspired by Malinin's range of jumps, six in all.
"I always knew he was very good at the Axel but I saw his free program today and all his jumps were solid, just quality", Uno said.
"He can really get up and is so at ease doing it. He jumps in a way that won't lead to injury. He looks very flexible.
"Practicing lots of quads tends to increase the risk of injury but his form is the same every time. It's near perfection which is amazing to see.
"Right now, Ilia is more consistent and performing at a higher level. I want to get to where he is a year from now".
Re. Rika Kihira:
Kihira made her competitive return last month at a regional meet in her native Central Japan after missing all of the Olympic season with a stress fracture in her right ankle.
On Friday, she said she is still feeling pain but plans to skate through it with eyes on the Japanese nationals in December in Osaka.
"It should be a good experience for me", the 20-year-old said. "I hope I don't aggravate it. I'm not pushing it right now and saving myself in practice but decided to enter anyway.
"I'll try not to worry about my foot too much when I'm out there".

Wonder if she will dust off the Miss Saigon program or, if she has any show program that she can turn into a LP.
Yes, we have seen she is keeping up with triples on her IG but a full LP is tough. Honestly, if she manages to land 3-4 triples along with 2 2A's, I would be very inpressed!
So excited to see her again!
I’m excited to see her again too! She competed at the Aurora Games in 2019 and had new programs there that I’m not sure if she’s used since. I remember being impressed since she was coming off of hip surgery.

I noticed no sound...I wonder if that was on purpose...the Japanese networks being cautious about music royalties?

It's most likely the strategy of the person who posted it to twitter to keep it from getting pulled for copy right of the television network - notice that it's not the full screen & only half the graphic is visible.

You are right. On the screen it says "due to copy right issues there is no sound" - so original TV news clip has no sound.

The organizer restricted tweeting by the media until 6PM (local time), which is ridiculous.

From fans' tweets:
Mirai Warriors (League of Legend) / Euphoria 100.88 - She was obviously tired towards the end but landed all jumps, and the audience gave her standing-O.

Sorry Link deleted

I was going to post Shoma's FS but the uploader has deleted it.

I am glad I got to watch it. Hopefully there will be other videos out there.

What was Loena thinking?

Probably better than doing a double lutz, which she did at Gardena. I guess she doesn’t understand the rule re: repetition of double axels. Can some COP savvy fan :COP: send her a message with the ideal jump layout if she really can’t do a 3Lo?

I think it’s probably something close to what she did, but with either 1) 3F2T2Lo and 2A2T or 2A2Lo or 2) 3F2T and 2A+1eu+2F (or 2A+2Lo+2Lo) depending on her ability to do loops in combination.

Just by the look of it I'm guessing she tried to squeeze in an extra 2A after missing the combo on the 3F but didn't realize it would be invalidated.

Thanks for the summary! Of the uploaded performances, I really enjoyed Daniel Grassl. He has made huge strides with his skating skills and connection to the music even in the six months since Worlds. Ilia has all the technical ability including carriage and flow but is just not that interesting in between jumps yet. He will be breathtaking in a couple more years though.

A few Carnival on Ice performances (opening group number, Uno, Sakamoto, Lambiel) have been uploaded at the same link I posted earlier.

Olympics.com article by Shintaro Kano with Malinin focus: https://olympics.com/en/news/figure-skating-japan-open-2022-ilia-malinin-praised
Malinin failed to land his now trademark quadruple Axel, touching the ice on his final rotation, but effortlessly went through his four other quad jumps.
At practice on Friday - when he didn’t miss a beat with his quad Axel - he had a mind-boggling seven quad jumps but played it safe and scaled back for the actual competition. [...]
“With all the training we’ve done, we studied what problems I had with the quad Axel since I hadn’t been able to land it”, he said.
“We took the time to see what the problems were and what we could do to solve it. That was really important. I’ve basically understood the basis for how to go for it on every try.
“It wasn’t the best attempt (today) but I felt pretty confident going into it”.
