Yes, fortunately the ISU decided long ago to get rid of penalizing entire combinations because of one minuscule jump (poor Oda and all the medals he could've won).

You have to enter the comp expecting him to fail. I think coaching has actually helped his skating, but I really don't expect him to compete after the Olympics. His body can't do it.

I heard him say proudly to a kid that his mom made the shirt. He was lovely with the scob kids. (I wanted to pull him apart and tell him to wear something more fitting. Have your mistress design the shirt! But I behaved for once)

The standout to me in this comp was Eric Sjoberg. Such quiet, deep edges, and really good height on his jumps. Someone to watch.

I enjoyed Ma, and while I don't love Brezina's music choices, the quality of his skating really stood out compared to the rest of the field. He has deep, sweeping edges, good speed, nice flow out of his jumps, and was one of the few skaters to really utilize the full ice surface.

And I loved Caluza and the joy in his skating. Does he have the tech minimums to make it to Worlds and/or the Olympics?

I agree with @BittyBug about Eric Sjoberg. For me he had the only free skate I’ll go back and watch again. Loved it!! His overal skating quality and body line is beautiful. This was a fresh and exciting program to me, both the music and the choreography. Great job Misha Ge! I have one thing to say to Eric… believe in yourself and don’t be so hard on yourself!!

Brezhina’s quality and edges were a standout, especially in contrast to Ma who proceeded him. The choreography was the same as the short program, with lots of “pointography”. Entertaining but not difficult. He’s been skating for so long he is entitled to skate to what he wants to…and that seems to be rock. Reminds me of Sabovcik in that respect.

Ma’s intensity is fun to watch. He has really improved the quads! This program was no where near as effective as the Swan Lake short. He has got to improve his basic skating skills, edges and spins to really move up.

I always enjoy Carrillo, even with a subpar performance.

Naumov is still a bit like a race horse out of the gate. If he could slow down and take his time a bit more, I wonder if it might work for him. Take his time a bit more before jumping. I’m always excited when I see him on the roster. Lots to come from him.

I think Sjoberg may be the new Camden for me. I still love Camden’s skating style but his jumps and spins desperately need consistency. Too bad.
