2019/20 ISU Grand Prix Assignments & Alternates thread

Gosh, the entry lists for the Grand Prix series, are looking completely different now from when they were first released.

Skating is such a tough sport. So many injuries and withdrawals.

Four sub spots available and none went to top alternates Kim and You? They are victims of their own success, which shows how unmeritorious the GP selection process is.

Definitely agree. I wish at least some thought could be given to providing the best overall fields for the benefit of spectators, and giving the most opportunities to skaters who have earned them.

But I guess we have this conversation every year.

But I guess we have this conversation every year.

I remember when Mariah Bell won an unexpected silver medal at Skate America in 2016, and put herself in consideration for NHK when another competitor dropped out.

The Japanese organisers could have selected her, but no disrespect to Dabin Choi (who had placed 7th at Skate Canada), went with the Korean skater instead.

I got the impression the JSF were eager to get Satoko Miyahara (who was third at Skate Canada) to the final.

If Bell had competed, medalled, and placed above Miyahara, then she would likely have gone to the final. If Choi had placed above Miyahara (who took silver at NHK), and by combining the points she earned from both events, that scenario would have been much less likely. (For the record, Choi placed 9th at NHK).

It should be noted that NHK was the last of the six Grand Prix events held in the series staged that year.

With a win or 2nd place at NHK, Miyahara would be on the cusp of qualification, and in fact, squeaked in with a sixth-placed ranking heading into the final.

Satoko ended up winning the silver medal at the GPF behind Evgenia Medvedeva.

So it really does perpetuate the theory, any rival nation's athlete perceived as a potential threat to host federations with a vested interest in their own skaters, will likely not be chosen.

I was thinking they would choose the Americans on the sub list to replace Ting...that to me makes some sense (not all of the sense, but some...). I am more interested to see how they replace Loena, as obviously there are no Belgian skaters on the sub list. Those should totally go to Yelim and You, but let's see...

Sub List (removing RUS and JPN who are maxed)

KOR Yelim KIM (SC)
KOR Young YOU (SC)
ITA Marina PIREDDA (none)
AZE Ekaterina RYABOVA (RC)
USA Courtney HICKS (none)
FIN Emmi PELTONEN (none)
CAN Veronik MALLET (SA)
GER Nicole SCHOTT (none)
USA Megan WESSENBERG (NHK)
SVK Nicole Rajicova (none)
-------adding some more since some of above have been MIA----
AUS Kailani Craine (none)
CZE Eliska Brezinova (none)
USA Amber Glenn (SA)
SUI Yasmine Yamada (none)

wait......hold all the horses... Loena is out again???

Please tell me no......

where did you hear or see anything regarding Loena?
Loena Hendrickx is no longer listed in the entries for her GP events (IdF and Rostelecom); the ISU ladies grid has not yet been updated today.

She has been dealing with injury for a while now so this is not really a surprise... here's hoping she will be recovered for the 2nd half of the season.

ETA:
So CHN does gave its host spot away?
Yes, although Leung did win Chinese Nationals last December.

I would like to see USFS do the voluntary thing and invite Yi Christy Leung to Skate America, and for her/HK Federation to accept. It's just a short hop plane ride from C. Springs to Las Vegas, and she's a worthy competitor. (I'd be OK with Young You also, but I believe she is in Korea right now).
Yi Christy Leung got the open spot for GP USA

They listened to me! USFS actually listened to me!!! :biggrinbo

IKR my editing Wikipedia (sorry I was bored) they finally did something but why Megan Wessenberg? You Young would have been a much shorter flight also way more competitive hopefully You and Kim won't have to deal with this next year by getting 2 spots

And therein lies the rub.
