2019/20 ISU Grand Prix Assignments & Alternates thread

Just not my season. First Stepanova & Bukin (who at least we hear will be ready for Skate America), then Ting, and now Lorraine & Quinn.

Things clearly went much too well for me last season. I should have known the moment Sui & Han won that gold medal with a clean free skate despite her injury that the fates were going to demand a heavy toll.:(

Do we need to start talking about the black mark of @Dobre?

ugh, super upset about McNamara/Carpenter.

Looks as if basically anyone but Galyavieva/Thauron from the top 10 list could replace McNamara/Carpenter at IdF. Kind of hoping for Sphilevaya/Smirnov, but... I'm sure I won't get my way! LOL

DANCE (next 10):
RUS POPOVA & MOZGOV (SC)
LTU REED & AMBRULEVICIUS (RC)
FRA GALYAVIEVA & THAURON (RC)
RUS SHPILEVAYA & SMIRNOV (RC)
GER KOCH & NUECHTERN (none)
ITA TESSARI & FIORETTI (none)
GBR TWEEDALE & BUCKLAND (none)
HUN YANOVSKAYA & LUKACS (none)
GER MUELLER & DIECK (none)
UKR NAZAROVA & NIKITIN (none)
UKR POPOVA & BYELIKOV (none)

To replace Ting, both of her events are maxed out on JPN and RUS skaters. I have barely any guesses on replacement. NHK may go with one of the Korean skaters? Copying over the top 10 minus JPN and RUS skaters from an earlier post by @haribobo:
KOR Yelim KIM (SC)
KOR Young YOU (SC)
AZE Ekaterina RYABOVA (RC)
USA Courtney HICKS (none)
HKG Yi Christy LEUNG (none)
USA Starr ANDREWS (NHK)
FIN Emmi PELTONEN (none)
CAN Veronik MALLET (SA)
GER Nicole SCHOTT (none)
USA Megan WESSENBERG (none)

I would like to see Yelim get a spot. I know a lot of people want to see Young get one and Korea will likely back her as their National Champion, but Yelim deserves a second event herself and I don't see why she should have to miss out.

Does everyone realize that Korea currently has 7 ladies in the top 24 on the SB list?

Not to start an off-topic rant, but OMG JUST HOW MANY DOMESTIC "SELECTION COMPETITIONS" THERE ARE IN KOREA?!?! JFC GET IT TOGETHER KSU AND STOP THIS MADNESS :wall:

For the Youth Olympics selection, I don't think it's KSU's fault entirely. My understanding is that KSU has to send the names to IOC via KOC before December. The process is the same for other countries, too. The IOC deadline is early this time, so ranking/national results cannot be used. Last time Youth Olympics was held in February. If I remember correctly, KSU used the ranking competition results at that time. There was no separate competition.

Another way to select the Youth Olympic skaters would have been using the JGP results. Then Young You or Yelim Kim could not participate in the selection process, because they go to senior GP instead of junior GP.

By the way, Youth Olympics selection competition is not mandatory. It is Yelim / Young's choice to try it.

I am surprised DG has chosen LTU who had a great season so far and could easily place above his 2 other teams.
Great for them :cheer:

Reed & Ambrulevicius have the highest score thus far this season of the teams on the alternate list. It's a good choice, though I was rooting for Nazarova & Nikitin who defeated them head-to-head at Lombardia.

Meanwhile, Tessari & Fioretti are down in 57th place at the moment, well behind every other team on the alternate list that has competed this season. (Very brave, Rostelecom. Very brave:rolleyes:).

I wonder if Tursynbaeva will get replaced? Too bad Young You is in Korea - doesn't she train in CO Springs?

Yes, both You and Yi Christy Leung (HKG), who is on the alternates list and has no GP assignments, currently train in CO Springs with Tammy Gambill.

From the GP Announcement document:

7.6 Replacements
It is mandatory that an Organizing ISU Member replaces any Pair who withdraws from the event with an
alternate up to fourteen (14) days prior to the Team Leaders Meeting for that event.
For a Ladies or Men Skater, up to fourteen (14) days prior to the Team Leaders Meeting for that event, it is
voluntary that an Organizing ISU Member replaces any Skater who withdraws from the event who would be
the 11th or 12th entry, but must replace with an alternate any Skater who withdraws if fewer than 10 entries
remain.
For an Ice Dance couple, up to fourteen (14) days prior to the draw for that event, it is voluntary that a host
country replaces any Ice Dance couple who withdraws from the event who would be the 9th or 10th entry, but
must replace any Dance couple who withdraws with an alternate couple if fewer than 8 entries remain.
At the fourteen day mark, consideration will be given by the ISU Grand Prix Coordination Group to leaving a
position vacant because of visa requirements or unduly high travel costs that would be incurred by the
Organizing ISU Member.
Skater/Couples, who are part of the official Alternate List must be ready to accept an invitation for participation
in an ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating event, even on short notice, except if the reasons for refusal are obvious
(injury, illness, conflict with other competitions or with national activities, e.g. seminars, tests, etc.). The
benchmark of such short notice is seven (7) days.
The alternate list needs to be worked through in ranking order for the top 75 ranked Skaters/Couples according
to their Season’s Best. All Skaters/Couples of the alternate list will be grouped in top ranked groups of ten (10)
Skaters, out of which the respective Organizing ISU Member may pick one Skater/Couple for invitation.

I would like to see USFS do the voluntary thing and invite Yi Christy Leung to Skate America, and for her/HK Federation to accept. It's just a short hop plane ride from C. Springs to Las Vegas, and she's a worthy competitor. (I'd be OK with Young You also, but I believe she is in Korea right now).

Wow, shocking that an Eteri skater wouldn't have the safest and healthiest conditions to prevent this sort of thing.
Тursynbaeva's mother stated earlier that what her daughter has is recurrent condition, during last few years..... even when she was with Orser... And that she (her mother) fully expects it to happen again because "this is what happens in skating".. ;) (copy of her statement is posted a month ago in Russia with love topic).

Do we want to start speculating why Ting Cui is injured twice in 6 months? she withdrew from several events this season already..... Shocking that in perfect American conditions a top skater wouldn't have the safest and healthiest conditions to prevent this sort of thing.... :drama:

I keep having flashbacks to Marjorie Chin when she'd bang on about her daughter, Tiffany's, 'muscle imbalance'.

I still have no idea what that means.

This is not a good time to send Tursy-mother any questions... she is already on edge and snapping back at people on twitter, even those who innocently say "we wish Trusy to make it to 2nd GP".. ;) Trusy mom is her manager and she'll find a solution i am sure. that women is unstoppable...

Yes, she sure found a way to make sure her daughter who couldn't even bend forward would still skate at the event that gave her $18,000 for second place (Shanghai Trophy).

I don't know...... maybe she learned it from Yuzuru and his endurance, while in Canada.... :D

Split your head open, put on bandage, get a hug from your coach, skate again and fall again....

Point. Completely. Missed. Elite skaters everywhere are subject to injuries. That is a fact. Repeatedly doing training after an injury often causes a recurrence of the symptoms/condition or other problems with the affected part of the body. That is another fact.

What differs is how a Skater, Skater's Team, and Federation deal with an injury. I'm glad that Ting Cui has a team and Federation that takes medical advice seriously and does not force her to skate before proper recovery nor tries to lay a guilt trip on her for placing health above sport/money/national pride. And that is the real point to be made.
