Would Gubanova and Tarusina be eligible as alternates as I'm guessing the Russian Fed didn't submit their names (they were each guaranteed one)?

We don't know for sure if they weren't submitted or the 18 available spots for RUS were filled before they get to them although that scenario is less likely since also guaranteed one Konstantinova got 2 anyway. In the case of Tarusina since she was put on the RUS Junior Team Im guessing she wasnt submitted but Gubanova is weird.

If they had been submitted, they were guaranteed one, which means that would be given before the non-seeded skaters got a second one.

Normally yes but this year Russia had too many ladies for all the guaranteed to get one while also making sure their contenders got 2...or whatever wording makes more sense

I had forgotten about Prochnow aging out of juniors. Bummer that they didn't get any spots. They had some fairly decent results last season, after all.

Yest, that'0s what I was trying to say. If Gubanova had been submited then no way would Konstantinova would have gotten 2 before Nastia getting 1.

AFAIU, Konstantinova could have gotten a host spot at Rostelecom Cup as her second event
Russian Fed usually names host spots based on Nationals Results (and Stasia was 4th there), also she could have benefitted from being in the top-24 on the season best list and in the top-24 on the worlds standings list.

Oh right, Stasia is at RC so yeah, they likely saved her giving her the host spot.

That doesn't give anyone additional guaranteed spots, ie, one spot for each.

From everything we've been told, host spots are either first or second after Worlds 1-3 select their events. (This is not in the documentation.). The documentations list host spots later in the selection criteria, which doesn't necessarily mean sequence.

If host spots come before SB selections, then no other host was obligated to give someone guaranteed one spot a second spot. Sometimes hosts seem to play a TBD game to force other Feds to assign a guaranteed spot, and later they give them the TBD spot.

It seems like they can add people for consideration after the initial selection, based on past practices. It may be possible for Gubanova, for example, to sub in as an alternate, if one of the assigned Russian Ladies has to WD.

Feng and Nyman are the obvious pick for skate America

I WISH SkAm woulda already chosen them... D&F woulda got 2 anyway.... and if not then work to get the TBD.

then SkAm coulda maybe slid in L&P to SkAm as well.

D&F have had chances and More than enough SkAms.

I guess ANL has to practice the tough love since USFSA isnt in the business of it. lol

Team Australia is about what I expected. One day Brendan will get two assignments in the first round, but it is not this day. Katia and Harley just missed too many events last year to get two. And Kailani's season didn't go well enough. That's fine.

Happy for Jason at SkAm and NHK, which seem to be two of his favourite events, even though he often has terrible luck at NHK. Hoping it goes better for him this time.

Nice that Australia got some Grand Prix love.

A little baffled however, that the team of Lubov Ilyushechkina/Charlie Bilodeau, who have yet to compete and are theoretically unranked, received two assignments over Alexandrovskaya's and Windsor's one.

They were eligible for one as a split/returning team (based on Liubov having placed sixth at Worlds with Dylan in 2017), and Skate Canada gave them a second spot as a host pick. Otherwise they'd just have one.

One of the privileges of skating for a host federation.

We think that I/B's show that split couples with at least one partner having placed 1-6 with a former partner can have that result from at least three seasons back. I/M were 6th at 2017 Worlds.

The rules aren't in the Announcement, but, both return skaters and returning split couples, placing 7-12, have to have the results with the last two Worlds since they last competed/last two seasons, while comeback skaters, who placed 1-6 have 10 seasons. Split couples appear to have more years as well.

The rules aren't in the Announcement

Every year more and more there seem to be so many situations and choices that come down to a free-wheeling interpretation of "rules" that somehow aren't spelled out definitively and feds just seem more and more willing to take advantage of this and "screw" other feds potentially by doing so. Can it really be THAT hard to get some of these rules written in clear definitive language so we're not all scratching our heads trying to figure out by what rule/fed whim not actually a real rule choices are being made? Or does the ISU not want to handcuff the feds by actually governing their constituent bodies?

I suppose they could be invited to Japan.....does Japan have any pairs?

Only Gold, as a comeback skater, received one. All split couples have received two. They all placed 1-6, which Ilyushechkina did with Moscovitch.

It's the 7-12 skaters/teams who are more dependent on a host pick for their second.

But Skate Canada would have been stupid not to invite them to Kelowna: there's likely more interest, or at least equal interest in them than any other Pair.

Split Couples, who placed 1-6 at prior Worlds, though, are missing entirely be and have been since after year 1, when they were added to the top of the alternates list.
