2018 Academy Awards Red Carpet & Ceremony

There's always something unfocused about Oscar production numbers especially compared to how Broadway productions stage their musical numbers at the Tony Awards.

One of our suburban small theaters had an event to show all the short and animated short nominees (4 hours total with an intermission in-between). I didn't go, but my sister did, and said they were all fantastic films. She's watching to see if they announce who wins each of those categories.

I like Alison Janney so much. I still kind of wish that I hadn’t know this was going to happen for the last month and a half.

This has been a ho-hum Oscar ceremony for me so far. All the winners were known weeks ago it seems. All these guild awards and other awards with overlapping membership is making the Oscars really redundant and unnecessary of an award show.

I know, I get the feeling that the Tony people have more experience with life performances or something like that.

:P

My sister is booing in the other room at the animated short win.

Oh no...the two of you are still fighting??

;)

So I’m happy James Ivory won for Call Me By Your Name. I still kind of wish the writers for Logan had won though.

It's just that I think if the Oscars are supposed to have the best talent putting on a show, they'd do a much better job of it. It's not like they lack the resources or money to do it. I mean L.A. does have a great theatre scene as well and that's where a lot of music artists hire their choreographers and stage directors for their tours.

I won’t be seeing Get Out anytime soon because my ability to handle horror movies is nil, but I’m happy Jordan Peele won.

Call Me By Your Name and Get Out are probably going to be the best awards this ceremony will have tonight unless something surprising happens in Best Picture or another category.

I agree. However I’ll be pretty thrilled if/when Del Toro wins Best Director. I haven’t had the chance to see The Shape of Water yet. I just found out it’s on iTunes. But I’m a fan of Del Toro.

If 'The Shape of Water' is going to win best picture it doesn't seem that it's picking up much steam so far.

It seemed like it had a lock on best picture but lately Three Billboards seems to be getting the attention.

I was kind of hoping for Rachel Morrison but all the kudos to Roger A. Deakins. Blade Runner 2049 looks stunning and to win after 14 nominations must be amazing.

I'm a bit surprised that Three Billboards haven't won as much as it could have won considering how it was seemingly unstoppable at the precursors but then it could still win Best Picture based on the oddity of how Best Picture winners are chosen compared to the other categories (ranking system 1-5).

I thought it was the other way around. Three Billboards seemed like the favourite at the Golden Globes, but then faded, and 'The Shape of Water' became the front runner after the SAGS (strange acronym for acting awards) and the BAFTAs.

My brother is driven nuts by the sound from the Best Original Song performances every year. The sound gets so messed up and he does sound sometimes. He was trained by a couple of guys who do it professionally so his standards are really high.

Actually, Shape of Water did not get nominated for SAG while 3BB won and 3BB just swept the BAFTAs. However, SoW won Producer's Guild and Director's Guild. The fact that 3BB lost Screenplay and wasn't nominated for Best Director may be a sign that it may lose Best Pic though there's been a split between Director and Pic for the past few years thanks to the preferential ballot used in Best Pic.

"3 Billboards" won the Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA. "Shape of Water" only won the Producers Guild Award as a major precursor.
