2018-2019 Canadian Ladies News and Updates!

Not necessarily - don't forget she came 15th at the Olympics...
Yes, her FP was horribly out of her normal skating, but still, if it can happen once it can happen again.
I hope she delivers, though. She has the goods.

It can but I have confirmed in her.

As much as I hate to admit it, I have zero problem with losing a spot for the women at worlds, especially if Katelyn retires. IMO we only have one strong female to even compete and that’s Gabby.

And she’s been inconsistent.

I think Alaine has too many issues and Larkyn is a bit too late to the game and technically lacking, especially with the Russians, Japanese and possibly the Americans if their women can put it down.

I think sometimes dialing back the team is the best thing that can happen.

With Kaetlyn definitely out, there will be a lot of pressure on Gabby as the #1 Canadian lady. That she doesn't have any real competition in Canada only creates more stress for her.

As #1 Canadian lady, Gabby will be well aware that a lot will be expected from her at every performance. And the international competition isn't getting any easier.

She’s been in that situation before.

And frankly, we’re not talking about her needing to win a medal or anything. Even after one of the worst FS of her career at the Olympics, she still came fifteenth.

The GPF is in Canada this year, and many are expecting or at least hoping that Gabby medals in both her GP events and earns a spot for Canada in the Ladies event there; IIRC, Colonel Green, you felt it was doable.

And Gabby has to finish top 10 at Worlds 2019 or there's going to be one Canadian lady at Worlds in Montreal.

I thought it was doable on the assumption that Skate Canada would be looking to give her as favourable a set of conditions as possible. Which they didn’t.

So while it still could happen, rather than having a shot at winning SCI she’ll at best come second. And her other assignment, NHK, is a tough field too. I’m less optimistic than I was before the assignments came out.

Gabby is definitely capable of finishing in the top ten. I don't understand all the fretting about Gabby. She's not a newbie and she doesn't have meltdowns as much. It may not be easy but how about having a bit more faith. She's earned it. Last year, she was plagued with bad luck. Other than that, she's been pretty solid.

I don't think it's fretting to acknowledge that she is in a different leadership position this season. (She's in a very different situation internationally and even nationally than she was back in 2015 & 2016). With leadership comes the opportunity to skate at home and many exciting opportunities. But it also comes with a lot of pressure. Athletes often need time to adjust to a leadership role and the level of expectations that come with it. Looking at Gabby's overall competitive career, it's obvious she has often done her best when the expectations were on someone else so this is new. She has quite a bit of experience, which should help her be ready. And hopefully she can enjoy & embrace the experience.

Skate Canada was obligated to choose among Higuchi, Miyahara, and Kostner, ie, the 1-3 seeds after Osmond declined GP. There is an undocumented, but often claimed rule, that the top three seeds get to choose their events in order of placement, after the host picks are selected. Even if this is a myth or only followed loosely, there is a draw for selection order among the hosts for each discipline, and SC may have drawn for late in the round. Similarly for skaters in the Top 24 SB: Medvedeva may have been the last skater left when it came time for Skate Canada to pick, although I tend to doubt this was how it played out.

I’m aware about Higuchi. If it was just that, it would be a fight for #1, but a fight she could theoretically win.

Inviting Medvedeva when (as you say) they almost certainly didn’t have to, on the other hand, is openly going against Gabby’s chances. At best she can finish second.

Is Alison Schumacher still going to be doing both singles/pairs this season (junior)? I think I asked this in the pairs thread at the end of last season.

She has not done pairs this yr that I know out. Her ex partner just started skating with someone else. I haven't seen them yet. Her foray into pairs seemed to help diff. probs that she had..She really moved up in ranking in Canada and got events so perhaps she decided to just concentrate on singles...That is a guess...I have not read that anywhere

Schumacher had a great skate at the JGP today and landed her first, I believe, triple triple in competition (waiting for protocols to see rotation and GOE). But after her disaster at Minto, this was great for her.

Check the protocols and she got dinged for underrotation on the toe of the 3S - 3T combo. Still a good effort.

She is old enough to compete in senior B's . Assuming she plans to compete senior at nationals, I hope she gets a senior B.

Shcumacher has skated more or less clean short programs in all three internationals. Too bad she didn't skate well at nationals because I would have sent her to junior worlds last year (her ISU short program and overall personal best scores are higher than Cotop).

With three spots for worlds I think it would be very wise to at least consult with the age eligible JGP competitors, especially if they skate well, to see if they have their senior programs ready and send them to one of the later challenger events.

With most of our senior women so inconsistent, I could see a scenario where someone makes top three at nationals and doesn't have the tech minimums.

Well let's see how Schumacher does in the free skate on Saturday.

@danafan ITA about getting some of the juniors out to get the senior minimums. I know
Gabby is top 10 material at Worlds, but we should not be sending anyone to Worlds this year who has not landed a Clean 3/3 in the short at least twice THIS SEASON. The short program is going to be so important. S/C should not risk sending skaters who do not have the tech to make it through when we have up and comers with 3/3’s. It is time to start building for 2022.

Daleman will be ok, I believe Osmond lit a fire under her to push herself but maybe not having that around for a season will help her “just skate” and see what happens.

Do junior singles skaters need to make any changes to their programs to compete senior? Girls probably not. Boys just integrate a quad into the short, I assume. Should be easy.

I think the senior long is 30 seconds longer and has a choreo sequence. Lots of skaters train both so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Well I hope they do everything to maximize the number of ladies that have met the TES standards for both worlds and junior worlds.

I heard that Cotop might be getting a late senior B.

Which nextgen ladies are planning to compete at seniors this year? It is hard to tell as they all competed only junior this summe except for Bausback at a US event. I know Cotop and Bausback will compete senior at nationals ( Bausback competed senior at the last challenge and missed nationals due to injury )

Who other than Daleman has a 3-3? I think Chartrand, Cotop and Pineault. Anyone else?

The Decelles twins both have landed 3-3s before.

Only Daleman is consistent with getting a clean 3-3. Chatrand tends to underrotate hers. Cotop looks like her jumps are being reworked by Ravi so expect one step backward before she goes 2 steps forward. The others pop theirs more often than not.

Oh I thought all long programs in all junior and senior disciplines became 4:00 this year.
Were juniors shortened?
