2018-2019 Canadian Ladies News and Updates!

Thanks it's been awhile since I read the book.
I always wondered what happened to the little girl (Holly Bragg) that her dad gave custody to the coach so she could skate. She never appears to have made it to Nationals, but a very non advanced internet search told me she wd from regionals in senior ladies in 2001, so she continued at least until senior. What an interesting story.
Anyway, go Canadian ladies lol!!!

I thought about Holly Bragg after reading the book again, too.

I wonder if she is still associated with Tracy Prusack, the coach who became her legal guardian.

It just goes to show the lengths parents will go to fulfil a child's potential. This sport is so ridiculously expensive at the elite competitive level.

Apparently, I did a little research and she made it to sectionals once and basically disappeared from the sport. Tracy Prusack appears is friends with her on Facebook and it looks like Holly works in a different field (That sounds like I am stalking her, but we have multiple FB friends in common and her page wasn't private-it looks like she keeps in touch with some skaters). I know Tracy now coaches in Lake Placid.

Haha. I ran a search and found the same details, too. Glad to see they still keep in contact.

I mentioned before that Kim Deguise-Léveillée has relocated to Oakville based on her instagram, and I see she's listed on the Skate Ontario list of skaters registered for the Ontario sectionals series: http://skateontario.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Athletes-Registered-as-of-July-16th.pdf

I also noticed Alicia Pineault on that list too - I guess she has relocated to Ontario too? I wonder who is coaching them.
Hmm. Her IG still says she's based in Montreal, but if she's on the Ontario list I guess she has.

Some Chartrand news. She's at YRSA with Tracey Wainman and Gregor Filipowski. Going to York in the fall, living full time in Toronto. New SP is Paint it Black, keeping the Sunset Boulevard LP.

I have to say, I'm somewhat relieved she is not with Joanne McLeod. :shuffle: All the best to her this season. I think these all sound like positive changes for her.

Thank you for posting that @honey. I hope Chartrand has a great season.
The article mentions Quebec Summer Skate - but she is on the start order for Minto. I wonder if she is actually skating there.

Since she was choosing between York and Burnaby -- I assume Simon Fraser, Jeremy Ten's alma mater -- that would explain why she'd have been spending time with McLeod.

I've always enjoyed Alaine, but the past few years she looked like the weight of the world was on her shoulders. Rarely smiling when she was skating etc.... I'm hoping that with this change she will come to enjoy it and not feel that burden anymore. She could be top 1-2 in Canada this year if she skates to her potential.

For those not following along the Minto Summer skate thread, Josee Chouinard's daughter, Fiona Bombardier skated in pre-novice ladies Group 4 short programs yesterday and did pretty good:

Fiona was the first one in the group so you only have to watch the first five minutes to see her. I think she looks more like her dad than Josee but nice to see her following her parents out on the ice.

She's skating her free this morning but her group is in the rink without a stream.

I was watching parts as I wanted to see Marine Pouliot..I have been following her for several yrs. I mostly see her in pairs but she still keeps up with her singles.
Thank-you for the clip...I always loved Josee Chouinard but haven't heard much about her...Who did she marry and should I know him?
I thought her daughter had very good elements ....just a bit of a posture problem..She is very pretty but I agree she does not resemble Josee.

Josee married pair skater Jean-Michel Bombardier (1995 & 1996 Canadian champion with Michelle Menzies) in the mid 90s. They had twins in 2005, Fiona and Noah. Per some articles around the Vancouver 2010 games, they split in 2006.

Would you not have to show up in person and register for the event to get on that list?
No, registration is all done online and Minto starting orders were posted a while back (eta: @danafan posted a link last Saturday in the Kiss & Cry section).

Chartrand is quoted in the GS article as pretty much saying the same thing:

“When there’s no pressure, I can really enjoy myself on the ice and the freedom of it. The height in the air, the speed…all the simple things that made me fall in love with skating in the first place. I hope that the new-found joy will translate into more enjoyable performances for the audience, as well. I want to do this season for me.”

What makes you think that? Not at practices?

She's listed in the start orders. Would you not have to show up in person and register for the event to get on that list? (I see in other disciplines there are people like Joseph Phan who were on the entry list but not in start orders...)

I saw a post on golden skate from an Admin (presumably someone who talked to her for the article?) who said she wouldn’t be at Minto.

gsk8 noted in the Golden Skate Minto thread that Alaine won’t compete there - she will compete in Quebec.

There are two pages to the Jr men start order; you need to scroll down to see Joseph Phan at #24

LOL, got caught on that once already in another discipline. I guess I didn't learn that lesson. Too funny.

OK I guess it's settled. Alaine not there. Maybe she registered before she :gallopin1 to Toronto.....

Kelsey Wong, Megan Yim and Emily Bausback are scheduled to compete in the Senior Ladies SP at the Glacier Falls Summer Classic club competition tonight in Anaheim, California. If I hear or receive any results, I will post in the competition thread in Kiss & Cry and in my blog (unseenskaters.wordpress.com).

A relatively recent interview with Cynthia Phaneuf, published in December 2017.

She has three children now and enjoys her motherhood.

Great article. She sounds happy and centered and they are living an interesting life.

Three kids. Wow....much more prolific than...... (never mind)

As I posted in the ISU Challenger GSD thread earlier today, Skate Canada has assigned Gabby Daleman to the U.S. Classic in Salt Lake City (Sept. 12-16) and Alaine Chartrand to Nebelhorn Trophy (Sept. 26-29).

Copying over what I posted in the Canadian competitions thread in Kiss & Cry re. Wild Rose:
Aurora Cotop (Thornhill FSC ON) won [Junior] Flight B - her scores were: 51.95 (1) 95.51 (1) 147.46

Junior Women (Flight A) was won by Emma Bulawka (Kelowna FSC BC/YK) 51.59 (2) 92.05 (1) 143.64 (she has replaced Alison Schumacher in JGP #2 on Skate Canada's website... I assume based on her results here?).

Thanks for the link. She looks quite mature for her age. It's hard for me to comprehend that Josee's daughter could be this old already. I realize she is on blades and the coach is not, but unless he is quite short, Fiona would appear to be fairly tall. In that and the shape of the eyes she does remind me much more of Jean Michel than Josee, though it would appear she has Josee's fairer colouring. I am certainly no technical expert but I enjoyed watching her edges and I she appears to enjoy spinning in particular - could be wrong.
