Russian figure skating news in 2024 & 2025

They gave Liza Tuktamysheva a chance to skate at Gala saying goodbye at her home rink and celebrating her retirement in the most beautiful way

Some tears, flowers and a hug from Mishin
Even I might have shed a tear or two. Might.

Missed most of the first half of the Gala due to a quick trip to the local Christmas market before it closes later tonight, but from what I have seen so far, the skaters are using a lot of Russian music.

Russian Nats can be so random sometimes. Now they have the "Bonanza" title music play during the medal ceremony .
It seems to me that Russians are culturally isolated and so they often use Western music or other cultures music without knowing the context and symbolic meaning it might have for non- Russians. So the effect can be anywhere from groundbreaking creativity to utter offense to comic ridiculousness.

Notable Men's LP from Nationals

Petr Gumennik
He plans to compete at St Petersburg Championship before the Olympics. He feels like the second event feels easier and goes better if there are two events in a row

Evgeni Semenenko

Mark Kondratiuk

Matvey Vetlugin

In other news,
Maria Zakharova (bronze medal at Nationals, Tsareva's daughter, who has missed two years due to injuries) has been added to the cast of 2026 Bologna on Ice upon Ari Zakarian's invitation.
Boikova/Kozlovskii and Kaganovskaya/Nekrasov have been confirmed already

Tamara Moskvina (84) is set to take part in Averbukh's New Year's show as Turtle Tortilla from the Russian adaptation of Pinocchio

Gallyamov is acting like a jerk after Nats, but not that it's news to anyone

Judging by the first fifteen second, I think Vetlugin's Free Skate is appalling imperialist propaganda that demonstrates why Russian athletes should stay banned until every last inch of occupied territory is returned to Ukraine.

How did you watch it?

Lol! Seems like war and peace and doctor Zhivago but not using traditional war horse and if you know about war and peace you wouldn’t say pro war!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When somebody told me that Vetlugin skated to "God Save the Czar" in the full Russian military uniform, I had to see it to believe it. He skated to his full potential and with a dead straight face. Still, knowing his pernchance for parody on ice, for which he was ceaselessly rebuked, I think this is a way more subtle type of parody, where the general public does not view it as such. If that's the case, it shows great personal courage, and I applaud him. If not......then, it is sad....I hope it's the former, though.
