In Memoriam

The article also notes that when it came out that Sherman had married 14 months earlier and had a child, fans were shocked and dismayed - and they also learned he was three years older than had been publicized (!). Was that his fault? Likely more manipulation by his agents and managers to shape him into something he never was.

I'm currently reading Tim Matheson's autobiography - it's excellent - and he mentions how when he was a child/teen actor, it was normal for the studios to order young actors and actresses to go out on dates together. Just so that the paparazzi and gossip columnists would give them publicity, and to build the image of them having wonderful social lives and lots of attention from the opposite sex.

One of Tim's first TV roles was a walk-on part in Leave It To Beaver - the kind of role he calls "third guy through the door". At the time, Jay North (Dennis the Menace) was making thousands of dollars a week in 1950s money, getting scripts sent to him and his agent sifting through multiple offers of work, and living with his family in a nice house that his TV work had paid for. A few years later, after Dennis The Menace was cancelled and puberty hit, Jay North was in the same waiting rooms as Tim, auditioning for the same minor roles in the same small projects.

Being a teen idol is tough, and it's extra tough for young men and women who don't have control over their careers.
