True Crime thread / for Adults only

The resentencing hearing for the Menendez brother has started today in Van Nuys, CA. KNBC in Los Angeles has a very good live update stream here. There will be no photography, audio, or video recording.

Mark Geragos is the Menendez brothers’ defense attorney. 👀

The hearing is expected to last two days.

🍿

Press conference with Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

Basically, he said he will change his mind about not supporting clemency ONLY if the Menendez brothers fully repent of what they did.

Talking heads seem to believe they will indeed be paroled. We shall see.

Was the family adamantly supporting them back in the 90's when the trial happened like they are now? I didn't really 'follow' the story or trial other than what you saw on the news every night or on shows like 20/20, etc. I don't remember the family coming out and so strongly supporting them like they are now .... but it was 30+ years ago so maybe I just don't remember.

A LOT of skepticism about this suicide:

Update: The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI are now involved.

I think it’s clear that it was a suicide, but this pastor………😬 😳 😱 😡

UPDATE: The husband has now been arrested for assault.

Geesh. He’s still a pastor at this church…….😬

UPDATE: Pastor John-Paul Miller, Mica Miller’s widower, has apparently remarried. And the whole story keeps getting more 😬.

So….now Combs is alleged to have dangled Bryana Bongolan (friend of his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura) over a 17th balcony.

The prosecution really needs to tie this story up together and point it towards Combs committing the sex trafficking and racketeering he’s been charged with. Right now, they’ve only proven that he’s a………horrible guy? 🤔

I told DH that if convicted, he will be pardoned like so many others. Right or wrong, for that reason I'm not investing time into this case.

I think this week’s testimony from “Jane” gets the prosecutors closer to proving the racketeering charge. This is all horrible stuff. 😢

The prosecution is likely to finish their case next week.

Unfortunately, last weekend there were shootings and murders of some Minnesota state lawmakers. Vance Boetler has been arrested and charged. He is expected to arraigned in federal court today for the federal charges.

Here is the federal complaint for United States v. Boelter.

Here are the initial state charges for Minnesota v. Boelter.

The initial state complaint was made for second degree murder because it made it quicker to get a warrant. In Minnesota, warrants for first degree murder require a grand jury, which takes more time. I think the Hennepin County DAs office will seek upgraded charges to first degree murder.

The federal charges are for the actions relating to interstate & internet stalking of the lawmakers, the murders of the Hortmans, and the firearm use in both shootings. I’m not sure why the attempted murder charges aren’t included in the federal case.

I will be surprised if federal prosecutors don’t seek the death penalty.

I hope he gets convicted by the state because I don't trust Trump not to pardon him if he's convicted by the federal trial.

FYI, I edited my previous to (hopefully) clarify the federal vs. state charges. I also thought that we should take the “criminal case” part of this story out to this thread.

I bet the federal case is first, mainly because the conviction rates are A LOT higher than in most state courts.

So….I have been following the MA v. Read retrial. It seems like there’s some circumstantial evidence that points to Read, but was there enough? I’m skeptical.

The jury has entered a fourth day of deliberations. Here’s the verdict slip. Is the jury confused about what to do with Count #2?

I’m thinking Read should be Not Guilty of Count #1.
