Zhulin: Hard to Accept that Liu is Oly Champion but Valieva is Not

But I just can’t bring myself to call her the strongest figure skater on the planet. There’s too much of a drop in scores and technical elements compared to the previous Games, where our skaters dominated.

Oh, Alexander Viacheslavovich, go have yourself a Valieva cocktail and stop whining. :grandpa:

Alysa Liu won, and the reigning Russian National Champion finished off the podium. :summer:

For that matter, when Alysa was 13, she landed two triple Adams in her FS to win US Nationals. Later she got credit for a 4Lz at JGP Lake Placid.

Quite often, youngsters have more difficult jumps.

I realize that much of what we see on FSU comes from FS Gossips, but it appears that the loudest voices in Russian skating have not come to grips with the fallout from doping, the new age restrictions and the invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Alexei Urmanov trains a reigning Olympic Gold Medalist and appears to keep his own counsel.

Maybe we should have two categories for gold: one with grandpa's backwash, one without!
The thing is one has nothing to do with the other. I am a person that does mourn for Kamila. I believe the adults in her life told her what to do and then threw her under the bus with that ridiculous lie about her grandfather. Zhulin should be condemning them. Why should Alysa even be part of this conversation? Also he was so slutty in the 90’s. Blech.

I’ve been reading about the kindness of Urmanov and the fact that he has been working away from the most popular facilities. I also understand Mikhail got next to nothing from his own federation though they are certainly gifting him now. Urmanov apparently didn’t get paid at times and Mikhail was in broken down skates for extended periods of time. I’m happy for him now.

I think all of the Russian girls at Sambo70 were victims. Much like the East German swimmers.

I sincerely hope that figure skating has really moved away from being enamored with the Eteri-style of skating. There’s more to skating than tiny uber-rotated jumps and overheard arms and flailing legs, and watching the Russian national champ (sorry, can’t recall her name right now) made me grit my teeth. I also felt so bad for her as it was clear that she was skating with the weight of Russia on her shoulders.

to be fair - Valieva and Kostornaia were glorious skaters. How much the doping enhanced that (especially the jumps) we will never know but they were not the typical Eteri like skaters.

I'll take the Alysa Liu of today over thirteen year-old Alysa. There's more to figure skating than those jumps. I doubt that Alysa cares one bit about what Zhulin thinks.

And I never enjoyed the rest of Valieva's skating, even putting aside what helped make the jumps possible.
