U.S. Men 2025-26 Discussion - Quad God and the Mere Mortals

I'm not shocked w/the USFSA assigning Brown to Four Continents and Worlds, but I very honestly hope that Brown ultimately decides to pass up on both to allow the alternates (who I feel are more deserving of the actual/initial assignment) to compete there.
I hope he declines and leaves USFSA with one spot next year if Ilia withdraws.

Jason has been to two Olympics, has a team medal, and has been to countless Worlds. That's a good career.

It would be nice to see other Americans have the chance. They all work very hard.
Yes I agree. I'm down for seeing what the other skaters can do as well. Like I had said before I don't real enjoy either of his programs this year so I don't mind not seeing them again.

I think he'll go if they really want him to go, whether or not Malinin is in Prague. Unless he's injured or just can't, I don't think he'll turn down a request to go, not just being added to the list. It may be a well-choreographed courtesy and allow him to turn it down gracefully, without fans upset that he's been dumped.

The U.S. has three spots at Worlds, and three alternates who can subtitute for either or both Brown and Malinin.
I'm talking about the possible results and spots for next year. The past U.S. men not named Jason and Ilia have been 20th or lower the pass three years at Worlds. I hope they can get it done and the reason I hope Jason skips is that he shouldn't do a competition because the USFSA is guilting him into doing it because they don't have faith in the other skaters to keep 3 spots if that is the scenario. If he actually wants to do 4CC and/or Worlds great.

I don't think Ilia will withdraw, but if he does, at least Tomoki will get to compete. I would be very happy for him because I think he's earned it. But, counting on Torgy, Max, and Tomoki at Worlds would not be good.

They do work hard. To be fair, though, so do a lot of skaters, and they've all had chances to make it to Worlds and haven't been able to do it. In general, the men haven't really made great cases for themselves this season. We don't just give Worlds spots to people out of sympathy for their hard work. I would have liked for Jacob to get a chance at Senior Worlds, not just because he is younger, but because I thought he skated so well at Nationals and sending him to senior Worlds instead of Junior Worlds would open up a spot for another promising junior to go to Junior Worlds. But, USFS decided not to do that. They have a different agenda.

Jacob doesn’t have a quad. He may also have consistency issue if he has to land one in Each program

I am well aware that Jacob does not have a quad. I am also aware that the American men not named Ilia do not have consistent quads and that there is more to scoring than quads. Jacob came within a tenth of a point of beating Max at Nationals without a quad and arguably would have beat him if there had been an international judging panel and audience. Anybody familiar with my posts knows that I have not been a huge Jacob fan, that I was pulling for Max to earn an Olympic spot, and thought that Tomoki, though not to my taste, had done better than either Jacob or Max this season. But, my opinion is based on what actually happened and what makes sense. They are not keeping the same order for alternates in pairs given how close it was, and they could do the same thing with the men. I think it would be both fair and smart.

Where did this idea come from that USFSA is forcing Jason into competing at Worlds against his will? It seemed to me that he was very happy to skate at Worlds the last couple years.

I don't think anyone is saying or imply that the USFSA was forcing Jason to skate as past worlds because his intention was being on the team for the Olympics.

The previous poster said "I think he'll go if they really want him to go, whether or not Malinin is in Prague." Who is the they? The USFSA.

But I believe the idea has been mentioned multiple times in this thread and past U.S. men threads that the USFSA might have been convincing Jason in staying around this quad with funding and assignments. The Olympics.com article after the men's free sounded like he was still hoping on being on the team and was happy with his "body of work."

Only one Russian man is relevant, Gummenik, who has an extra quad or two cushion over Torgashev and Naumov at their best. Torgashev's skating skills are probably superior and visibly so, but I haven't seen Gummenik live since he was a junior, so maybe not, and that's not really applicable to judging except in rare cases (Brown, Vasiljevs).
Based on what I saw recently at Russian comps, Gummenik does 5 quads normally right now and I think Moskvina had a hand in choreographing his program(s)? She's at the boards when he skates and I would say that he is a podium threat at the Olympics.

Based on body of work, I don't think any of them were robbed of anything. Any reasonable assignment from USFS is fine by me

Not so sure about that. He's not looking great.
You lot were saying that last year too.

Jason literally offered the chance on a silver platter last year. He didn't just leave the door open, he took it off its hinges, decorated it with neon signs and flashing lights.

And nobody took the opportunity. Leaving Jason to save the US men's asses. Again. And where did the other guy who "deserved the chance" finish? Oh yeah, he blew it. Hard. 22nd. Consistent with his other Worlds finish of 21st.

It's not Jason's fault he's been the most reliable non-Ilia man of the last quad.

I get that you love Jason, but acting like Torgashev only got to go to worlds because he "deserved the chance" is silly. He had great grand prix comps and did well at nats. Yeah he combusted at worlds. But it wasn't just some kind of gift to him to get to go.

I'm glad Jason did well at worlds. I'm sad he didn't have a good nats. But lets not rewrite what happened in the past.

Wasn't my argument. Was a response to skateboy's argument like Jason has somehow been blocking all these super-reliable awesome skaters who definitely would have done better than him, when the reality is, those skaters have had plenty of opportunities to establish themselves and none have taken it.

I am wondering if we will be seeing Ilia on Dancing With The Stars this spring.
I think DWTS only has a fall season now. :)

Spencer would rock that show. Not so sure about Ilia...he's still a little stiff but i'm pretty sure he took some sort of ballet at some point, so that could help.

That wouldn't surprise me at all - I also think they could have Chock and Bates on there competing against each other, similar to what they did with Meryl & Charlie.
Nope. I dream of Chock costuming Oona Brown so that she finally has a costume that works for her.

Madison is fully capable of both competing on DWTS and costuming Oona. OTOH I don’t think Evan would have any interest in competing against Madison.
