Gymnastics #25 - Onward to LA

Am I the only one who cannot find tiles on Peacock for All-Arounds or Event Finals? It's supposed to be on Peacock, right?
 
Seeing how the international judges scored Roberson should be instructive to USAG. Wong continues her inconsistent ways (really too bad what happened with her DTY since the Cheng was good). Blakely battles beam as always at Worlds, but bars was a good hit. Caylor, other than bars, was solid, but doesn't look like a world beater.
 
Argh...if Blakely hadn't received the OT deduction of .1, she would have made the final. She is 1st reserve there, so we'll see if she gets in.

All in all, every US athlete made a final, which is impressive. Maybe now that Jocelyn doesn't have to worry about the rock hard floor mat, she can lock in on vault and be more comfortable there.

Qualifying was, frankly, a hot mess from the US from what I can tell, but it was a lot of a mess all over. Which is no surprise for a post Olympic worlds.

The best shots at apparatus medals would likely have been: Skye on beam, Leanne on Vault, outside shot of Josc on floor.

Of course those were where the biggest errors came in. Josc didn't fall on floor, but she had major errors that brought her scores down quite a bit. Leanne's miss on the yurchenko is especially disappointing because her Cheng was the highest scoring vault of the meet despite doubts about how it would be scored internationally. (Personally, I thought her blocks were looking solid this year compared to last year, so I'm not surprised.) She would have been in it for a possible medal. Maybe the best shot.

Both Leanne and Dulcy still do have a shot at an AA medal. Dulcy finishing 5th with a fall and Leanne 9th with the huge mistake on vault is proof of that. I still think others have to make mistakes. Kaylia did make mistakes and still came out ahead.

I'm glad all four made an event final, although I cringe at Josc's ankles doing two more vaults. I don't think she's going to be competitive since she's got too many health issues to do full difficulty. She'd have to do a higher SV than she did in quals, and I don't think that's a good idea.

Skye's difficulty on bars was always going to be a real stretch to medal. She would have to be clean while others falter. Same for Dulcy on beam, but someone always falters on beam.

I'm not so impressed to see Melnikova in first, although it's no surprise that the gymnasts who weren't allowed to go to the Olympics are the freshest. I was always a fan of Melnikova before the war, but her qualifying as a "neutral athlete" is a joke. I very much hope Kaylia can clean up her other events and beat her.
 
I just watched the replay of the men's AA. Congrats to all but so happy for Noe Seifert and Switzerland! The field felt so depleted with no US, GB, UKR and others missing. Post Olympics years are always a little funky.

John R read the statements from the IOC and IG regarding the exclusion of the Israeli athletes by the Indonesian hosts. Basically, the powers that be aren't happy, but they stopped short of doing anything about it.

Well, not for nothing, but the IOC did announce they were ending all discussions with Indonesia regarding them hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics or the 2030 Youth Summer Olympics. They did what they could and who knows how likely Indonesia was to land the 2036 Olympics (there are a ton of interested countries), but the YOG could certainly have been a good possibility & a stepping stone for the big dance in the 2040s.
 
My social media blew up with stuff like "a return to dominance" but I have a hard time calling falling off the beam a return to dominance.

I don't think Melnikova's heels mattered that much. We are talking about 0.1-0.2 out of 14. It's just something easy to point at.

Leanne should be very pleased. I think she knows and knew that qualifications count more than is written.

Was Zhang Quingying 8 for 8?

Honestly the heels are a distraction. Her floor and beam scores were both MASSIVE gifts. According to her scores she had the BEST EXECUTION on floor of the entire meet?

Yeah, okay.

I am trying to remind myself that I would have been THRILLED for Leanne to win silver if you'd told me ahead of time. But the floor and beam scores for Melnikova were WILD. And all that in favor of an athlete who shouldn't have been allowed to compete at all.

To me, the beam should have been the deciding factor in Wong's favor.

Thanks @bardtoob. I haven't had a chance to watch the entire competition yet, so I appreciate the youtube videos.

With all the problems and bobbles Melnikova had on beam and floor, I'm kinda stunned she won. Leanne did have some mistakes on beam too, but she didn't fall, and I think her floor was cleaner that Melnikova's, so I am befuddled that Melnikova got a higher execution score. But I'm not an experienced judge, so what do I know? Leanne should be very proud of how she performed.

I am guessing that you don't know that you get connection credit when you link an acro series to three stumbling backwards steps in a series with choreographed arm waving immediately into a mid-routine beam dismount and remount ;)

Agreed. That beam was a mess and she knew it, too. Bad judging.

I like Melnikova's gymnastics more than Wong's, but Wong shouldve won. For the record I enjoyed Zhang more than either and am glad she was on the podium. I know she has the classic Chinese prowess on beam and bars and weaker on vault and tumbling passes, so placing on the podium at all is a major deal.
 
Question for those who are more in the gym loop than I. Why are folks saying that Melnikova should not be there? I am not looking to start a mud-slinging event, but seriously am interested in knowing.
