2025-26 Program Music and Choreographers

As much as I'd like the Shibs to skate to something besides Coldplay, I think many of the posters are mis-remembering how very little Fix You was used in the 17-18 Paradise FD. They had a musical phrase in from Fix You on the GP series, and then added lyrics/music in for Nats and Olympics. From their SL lift the lyrics went 'stuck in reverse'. Then it went back to Paradise or some transitional music (not Fix You) through the stationary lift. Then came the lyrics 'lights will guide you home' into the twizzles, but the music for the twizzles was back to Paradise for the rest of the program. Maybe :17 of Fix You in total.

Although I can see where some might think all Coldplay songs sound alike

I quite like Kiss from a Rose but it might be in 6/8 time, not 3/4.

Google agrees that it is in 6/8 time. As a math teacher, I do not understand the difference as I believe these two are the same number.

I think Iris (1998) by the Goo Goo Dolls switches back and forth between 3/4 and 6/8 but FSU's resident musicologists will need to weigh in on that.

John Rzeznik wrote it, so probably. (The Goo Goo Dolls were my favorite band for years. Rzeznik is known for using custom tunings on his guitars when he writes songs, so switching tune signatures seems on brand.)

Google confirms it switches bit it’s from 4/4 to 6/8.

Mind you, do Shawn Rettstatt and the IDTC even care about a rhythm's time signatures unless it's capable of "going viral"?

Yeah, but the whole point was to create an anti Rettstatt program!

I would have loved to see Kiss From a Rose!

Kiss from a Rose sure feels like a waltz. Meaning not “dance party.” So instead we get this crappy club music.

I know! I walked down memory lane and listened to a bunch of 90's music when it was first announced. It's a bummer how little has been used because of the requirements. I should reserve judgement and maybe be pleasantly surprised when all the teams debut.

It's how the notes are counted in the measure. A 3/4 time has three distinctive beats - "1-and-2-and-3-and" while a 6/8 time has two distinctive beats - "1-and-a-2-and-a" so it gives a different cadence to each measure.

Maybe an enterprising team could find a 1990s song in waltz time and call their RD "The Shawn Hate Dance"? ;)
Actually, there is a 1990 song by the Puerto Rican artist Chayanne called "Tiempo de Vals" (Waltz Time), with a rather lyrical pop-Waltz feel to it. I remember visiting my late aunt in Miami and that song seemed to be on all of the Spanish radio stations in late summer/early fall of 1990! It's a catchy tune and I remember it to this day! In the video accompanying the song, the artist and the other performers are dressed in 18th century style, rather than in a more accurate 19th century style but it's interesting just the same!

Olympics figure skater Alysa Liu changes program amid death investigation involving singer D4vd

Liu was going to skate her short program in the lead up to the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics to "This Is How It Feels" by D4vd and Icelandic artist Laufey.
