Skate to Milano OWG Qualifier - Beijing CHN - Women's SP & FS

Petrosian on the video looks very juniorish. I have never seen her live, so perhaps she is fast as a wind and her jumps are huge, but on youtube she looks like any tiny boring junior. Hope she brought her 3a or 4loop for the lp

Acting like she’s been a senior! She’s never been in a real senior competition and won’t be until the Olympics!

Nah, Russian girls peak at 14.
16 if they've got the Team Eteri :grandpa: special deal.
I’m sorry Petrosian is in first after seeing her program but hopefully someone will beat her in the free. Nothing against her personally but the possibility of an Eteri girl coming into Milan as a favorite makes me hurl.
She won't go in as a favorite. She'll be one of many skaters bunched in a pack of contenders. We'll have to see how the GP and GPF go to see who is marked as the favorite or favorites, but I don't see Petrosian being anything more than a name mentioned as a possible medal contender.

As someone who will vanish completely from the skating world for 4 months during Olympic season she won’t be anything but a question mark

Overall agreed with the judging.
I'd swap 1 & 2 on the strength of Gubanova's commitment to the choreography (PCS should've been higher imho) versus Petrosian's tight/rehearsed presentation, but agree still close.

I'd also have Risa Gomez over Yakovleva, but again agree that it's close.

I'm glad most people skated pretty well.

As the living example of the philosophy that the beatings will continue until morale improves, I’m sure she a contender. Fortunately both Kaori and Alysa have great heads for competition, and Mone and Isabeau are pretty steady as well.

Yup. I just don't see her being considered anything more than a darkhorse medal contender. Kaori & Alysa are going into Milano with the previous Olympic experience to draw upon and while they'll certainly have the hopes of their countries on their shoulders, they'll be sharing that burden with the likes of Mone & Isabeau, not to mention they're likely to have gotten the competition jitters of being on Olympic ice out of their systems in the Team Event. Petrosian will have none of that, plus she'll have the added challenge of skating in the first group because she'll be at the bottom of the WS rankings due to the ongoing ban.

for me the skate of the day was from the Estonian Livoskaja. What a great composition of the program - very interesting and great. I did not remember her from before, shame on me. I hope she makes it into the top five, preferably kicking Petrosian out, to be honest.

Wishful thinking and reality do not walk hand in hand here. Petrosian has a 3a and a 4loop when not injured. She will not be aiming for a medal at the Olympics, she will be aiming to win. Otherwise what's the point being there for her?
Uh-huh. And let's not forget :grandpa:staving off any unwanted growth spurts. I don't think it's working any more, though. If her 2A is anything to judge by, that 3A isn't going to be around by February, and I'm doubtful the 4Lo will either.

So, took a nice long 6-hr sleeping break and am now watching the Women's SP. Just skipping through the skaters ranked #14 and below because none of them stand a chance to making up the 15+ point difference between 14th & 5th.

Safonova - ugly jump/hop exit from her combo spin; minimal shoulder shimmying that is supposed to pass for interpretation I see; she's definitely been hurt by the ban and the lack of competitive opportunities, but still in the mix for one of the spots.

Petrosian - agree with those who've said she's good a mimicking choreo but it doesn't actually come from her core; jumps deserve scrutiny. Mark is being way too effusive about her PCS - I get it, compared to the 3 previous skaters, sure it's miles better, but that's a low bar.

Sueleymanova - she really should have gotten the last spot available in Boston over the unexpected Lithuanian girl who just edged her out of the FS - screwed by early group lowball PCS. I enjoyed this program far more than the first two women I watched and am annoyed that she's still getting lowballed on PCS.

Lahti - love her dress - the color is exquisite with her complexion; seems like she has nice speed and a lightness to her skating that the first three lack. Probably won't be able to make up the 6 point difference between her and the 5th spot, but that was lovely.

Zhang - here's another one skating with the weight of the nation on her slender shoulders. Bit fast with the free leg coming down after the landing on the combo. There's an inelegance to her body line and movement that is distracting. Clearly, more domestic score inflation was happening for her this summer. It was solid, for sure, but the score is fair.

Montesinos Cantu - every elegant dress - 5 stars; shame about the 3s - it would be nice if she could get the 4CCs min here; oh, that's something else to think about with these women - how many of them actually have the Olys/Euros/4CCs CTES mins? Do we need the drone overhead view for part of the step sequence?

Okay, during this last ice resurfacing & next warmup group, I'm going to look at the CTES list - 75 is what they need. Of the top 13 after the SP, here doesn't have it -

Obviously, Petrosian & Safonova - though they should easily achieve it once they've competed in the FS. Lahti and Montesinos Cantu are the only ones missing it - Montesino Cantu is 2.90 points away from it after the SP today; Lahti is 8.6 points away so she needs a really good FS. I'll be hoping they both can at least hit the magical 75.00 so they have a nice consolation trip to 4CCs in January.

Yakoleva - well, now, her family really did leave Russia - Ted says she now trains in Dubai. Bit dodgy on the 3t of her combo; I really hate the black tights and half over her boots to just finish off the wholly inelegant look. Can we give her Montesinos Cantu's dress & look? She's another skater who lacks lightness to her skating and it annoys me.

Lisovskaja - this dress is ugly - also, lighten her hair color and she bears a striking resemblance to Slutskaya in the face. Oh, some sultriness here in this presentation that I was not expecting based on the first half of the program, lol. I suppose anything is possible and Estonia may actually earn a 2nd women's spot.

Lovrencic - oh, that's right, she's got the uber-dramatic headpiece/scarf for her costume - the Korean women could take some pointers, and now the scarf/drape falls off the bun and I'm left wondering what's the poing if it's not held in place? Another attempt at sultry, though it falls short of Lisovskaja. Can someone please explain how this costume relates in any way to her music? Is she supposed to be some modern harem girl?

Risa Gomez - oh, God, "Chasing Cars" is enough to make me hate the program just on principle before she even begins, lol. Nice combo! Lovely, inoffensive program with solid elements. She bears a passing resemblance to Maddie Schizas. If we could take Maddie's higher tech content and give it to Mia, we'd have one really excellent skater, albeit with slightly bland programs, lol. Wait - she had a spin invalidated? She could certainly grab that 5th spot tomorrow.

Taljegard - oh, Josefin, the black tights are unfortunate; in fact, this whole costume & look makes her look heavier than she is. Yeah, nope, she's not earning a 2nd trip to the Olympics this year.

Gubanova - so, when is FSTW going to go mad over this cultural appropriation like some quarters are over Malinin's SP? :eyeroll: Love the color of this costume, though, much better than the blush pink dress she had a couple of seasons ago with her last Bollywood-inspired program. Love that smile of happiness after she lands the 3z and knows she's easily made it through her jumping passes. Good for her today even if she did biff her last spin & that's what put her behind Petrosian overall.

Hendrickx - Loena taking us to the club again - love the dress. Eeek - hand down on the combo and then a spin out on the 2a - definitely competition rust since she's shown these jumps in IG clips and practice here yesterday. Solid on the last jump - that's how you do it and show you've got good competition grit. Yeah, I get the shrug of her shoulders at the end there, but she'll be fine with securing her Olympic spot and that's all that matters.

There hasn’t been a quad loop in 4 years. There has been a toe loop though. 2024 nationals quad toe and 3A. 2025 Grand Prix final quad toe. Of course important to note-Not real competitions.

Given that Petrosian is an Eteri skater with Danny G choreo, I'm not sure why anyone would expect emotion or presentation. Disclaimer: I didn't see her skate but after reading the posts here I have no desire to.

Loena hasn't competed in a year and probably just needs to shake off the nerves. Hopefully, the FS will go better.
I think you are right about Leona, even the announcers said she was really good and consistent in the practices and nerves from not competing got ahead of her. I think the FS will be better. I think the fight will be for 4th and 5th. I would like Mia Gomez to snag a spot.

I obviously was confusing her with someone else than - put that down to sleep deprivation as I'd been up for almost 24 hours when I wrote that.
No worry!

I think you perhaps are thinking about Anne Line Gjersem at Nebelhorn Trophy in 2017. It was the last time Norway had a skater at the qualifier. I had to check and she did in fact compete there before 2018 Olympics. She placed 16th and scored 125 points, but she was 8th after the SP with 50 points so you are right, she must have bombed pretty bad in the free to end up with that score. And the next competition she did a career best with 158 points and took a bronze in Cup of Tyrol… Apparently I have forgotten all about this now 😅

That is the season she retired, so it’s been a while since she skated. But you know what - it’s not odd at all that you are mixing them up, because during European last season it just accoured to me for the first time that they look very alike sometimes. Both in looks and skating. Mia is a more solid jumper though and Anne Line had really great spins.

Yes, that's exactly who I was thinking of - 3 names, and the flag of Norway - must be the same person. 🤪

Not thrilled about Mark glazing Petrosian. It’s bad enough she’s allowed to skate but I’m not ready for a season of certain commentators pretending that these Russian skaters are the be all and end all when it comes to PCS.
Well there is no reason to talk about Petrosian again until the Olympics. She is completely banned from isu events so talking about her at skate America for example would be quite absurd! Or any comp

Mia spin wasn’t invaliated after all, puh, but it was downgraded from lv. 4 to 3, so that was probably the difference between 59 and 60 points. Usually she gets all her levels on spins. I think Ted didn’t do the math when her scores came, with a TES of 32 - there were 4-5 points left? That would have equaled to 36-37 in TES and that would have been amazing with a 3T-3T.

The first time I watched I was just on the edge of my seat hoping that she skated well. Frankly I didn’t even register the music. Yes glad she’s skated so well.

Now that I’ve seen it again - yeah this isn’t a great program to Bollywood music. Of course, Davis and White really set the bar high back in 2010, but her costume is more Middle Eastern than Indian and I don’t see much of Indian dance in the program itself.

Leona was overscored for that mediocre skate.

And I'm convinced more than ever that vocals need to be banished from skating forever.

I
If only Loena had gone a different path stylistically with her programs… I LOVED her Frozen by Madonna in 2017/2018. I wish she had built on it. Contemporary dance emphasizing fluidity and grounded movement. sigh I am so over this tacky night club vibe.

She wasn’t coached by her brother then.

I know.. with her bro and the same choreographer we’re getting some of the same stuff over and over again in fact, this is the second time she has skated to Inna. The first one was the short program a few years ago, with the very seductive orange dress I believe.

Having said all of that, I don’t mind because her programs break up the monotony of all of the emo music and warhorses. So good job, Loena.

(I absolutely love Mia but my goodness that emo chasing cars stuff… why is anyone into emo music?)
