Skate to Milano OWG Qualifier - Beijing CHN - Women's SP & FS

Loena’s program reminds me a bit of her 2022 free skate. She wasn’t giving me much performance until the very end, but good for her for coming back this strong. That had to be stressful and she came through that very well.

I’m surprised Gubanova doesn’t have a huge back injury given her jump technique. Oof. Anyway, that was a very nice performance and good for her as well for handling this moment.

Petrosian to me looks like she has potential artistically that is not being tapped. She has moments of commitment to performance with her face, and she’s able to hit some nice choreographic moments. But it’s not all blended yet, and I don’t expect her team to bring push her further artistically. The jumps look fine in some aspects, edge of disaster in some others. I’m sure she’ll last the season though and will undoubtedly be a medal contender at the Olympics.

I had not cared for Petrosyan in the past because she had only jumps. She has come a long way artistically. She is still only 18. Plenty of time to develop even more. She was injured in summer. I assume that’s why she didn’t do any quads. She didn’t need them anyway. I really enjoyed both her performances. Very happy for her.

Loved watching Gubanova. I have been watching her since she was 10 or 11. Always loved her. Such a complete skater! Happy that she skated so well.

I haven’t watched others yet.

Well, Petrosian provided evidence that the ISU and many others may have been right. Right now women almost always loose the 4`s and often the 3A`s in late puberty. Petrosian skated well but she was in the range of top ladies skaters. No more 14 year olds popping out the giant jumps, winning everything and then fading. In the last 4 years women`s skating in Europe has taken off. Wunderbar!

It does seem pretty difficult for adult women to hold onto quads. Even Shimada at 16 appears to be struggling with hers. OTOH, many women are doing 3As now, and I think we're not going to go back to a time when the field was all 2As.

Petrosian may not be everyone's favorite around here (including me), but there is no question that she is very, very good.

If she brings back the 3A, she's definitely in the running for the Olympic title. If she brings back a quad as well, I think it's hers (barring an Olympic meltdown).

There are 3A skaters who miss as often as they hit (Rion, Yoshida, von Felton, Watanabe come to mind.) Tukt and Amber made it a reliable jump in their 20s, more power to them. But the list of women who had them and lost them is a lot longer.

To be honest, I think because they conquered the jump later rather than while their bodies were still developing. When one's center of gravity and body develops due to puberty it surely messes with timing and the balance needed to land these hard jumps. All prior muscle memory goes out the window.

I don't think that there is necessarily only one way for a female skater to be able to do triple axels or even quadruple jumps in her twenties.

Ito, Harding, Nagasu, and Tuktamysheva all did triple axels in training sessions in their early teens, and at least some of them put the jump away for a few years.

Tursenbayeva started doing quadruple salchows at about the age of sixteen and eventually became the only woman thus far to land the jump in competition in her twenties.

When Petrosian isn't recovering from an injury, her 3A and quad have been consistent. She hasn't grown any within the last two years. She usually does the 3A in both the SP and FS. All she had to do here was win. What she does in February will be a different story. She's also developed Shcherbakova competition nerves. She'll be ready. She just needs to stay injury free.

Let’s add Alysa Liu to that list. I hope if she sorts out her boot issues we’ll see it this season.

Tursynbayeva is a cautionary story - it seems she became fairly disabled.

Petrosian rarely skates a clean FS, whether that’s due to repeated injuries the last 3 years or otherwise I suppose is up for interpretation.

I believe we’ll see a 4T, but the 3A, 4F, and most certainly the 4L, are likely to be MIA or messy. I’m not confident she has TES base value advantage that we’ve seen dominate the Womens discipline in the past.

The last no falls or pops- with big elements -was in December 2024. Obviously there was just a clean one but no big elements

I would be concerned that her team and Federation 'encourage' her to include 3A and quads in her training before her injury is healed and she shows up in Milano injured or is forced to withdraw.

They've been cautious with her training so far. We'll know her progress as she participates in the Russian GP events

I heard she was injured in summer. That may be why she is taking it slow and not going for the ultra jumps. Last year she had done two quads in her LP. If Adelina brings back the quad and a 3A, she could be in contention for the OGM. She could do two quads (one in combination).

All the best ones start in the Russian Empire. How about the girl from Cyprus? Probably, St. Petersburg.
Btw, Stefania moved to Cyprus in her early teen years because her parents work there. She couldn’t train properly in Cyprus because of very limited ice facilities, so she later relocated to Dubai for better training conditions but still lives in between two counties

Honestly, with both Loena and Anastasia competing here as well as two AIN representatives, this event felt a bit like Europeans.
Very happy with how the top-3 girls performed considering the pressure they had on their shoulders. I guess among all events here they (along with R/A and Gumennik) were the ones who were seen as sure locks for the spots, and had to not just get those spots but deliver. And I am really glad they did that, especially that early in the season.

I'm happy for Hendrycx and Gubanova. Thrilled for the young Chinese woman, she was really going for it.
Petrosian was fine but I wonder how the 6-7-8 finishers feel.
Sad for Josefin T. She brings so much to the sport.
