JGP #1 - Riga LAT - Men's SP & FS

Free skate is starting. Just noticed Ravi Walia is the tech specialist! Isn't he still a current coach? I didn't know people with skaters on the circuit were allowed to be on a panel, even if they have no skaters at the event - seems like a conflict of interest.
Peter Cain and Simon Briggs both serve on the tech panels at different comps. I think it's okay as long as none of their skaters are competing.

Is that a juniors thing, or does it happen in seniors? I could see it for juniors, since the stakes are lower, and I know they're short on qualified officials. But it's still an opportunity to lowball the scores of people competing against your skaters, later.

(Does Ravi have current skaters, though? Can't think who he's coaching, so maybe he's fully moved to officiating.)

Ravi is listed as an "approved" ISU Technical Specialist in the ISU list for this season:

very very rough skate for the Danish skater but one can see the creative program and his joy in skating.
I wonder if ice-dance wouldn`t be his thing?

Oh wow - he can only train 3h in the low and 8h in the high season....

Heinonen has figured out how to jump real high, but not how to land.

Music is disaster-movie cover of Seasons in the Sun.

Ice resurfacing underway after 2 of the 4 groups.

Medard

3a, 3z-2t, think he could get a lot more power and depth of edge out of his stroking, wild pop of 1f, 3z-2a-1a sequence, having difficulty finishing the landing positions today, fall on 3t + REP, a lot of red GOE on the second half elements so perhaps a stamina issue, here's to better skates later in the season

Kurtsev

4t turns out and looked under, nice 3a, 3z-3t, mad respect to the Ukrainian athletes who manage to skate to this level under horrible daily life/training conditions, 3s-3t (under), choreo sequence with a lot of flexi moves that might not be the best choice for him, dreaded V on last combo spin, nice skate which was mostly successful

Fabulous redemption skate for Elano!
Watched his skate during the final group WU

fall on opening 3a, but good otherwise, 3z-3t, his non-axel triples get good height and are landed with surety and strong exiting edge, and he had lovely musical engagement, 3z-2a-2a, a little slow getting free leg out on solo 3f but handled, extended body positions, glad he had a skate that showed what he's capable of

Vaclavik

after small struggle in SP, can he skate clean here? Matrix program, 3a-2t to open, 3a with full body wipeout, he's not doing anything by halves, interesting spin positions in camel, 3z-2t could use more linking footwork, 3z-1a-2a, 3f nice, wasn't perfect, but mostly smaller errors, and I think this will be a good program for him

Mori

3a, Man in the Iron Mask, bring on more of skating's greatest hits late 90's-early 00's edition, 3r, carrying nice speed across the ice, 3z-1r-2s with rather lackluster euler, 3f-2a turns out, looking a little fatigued here at end, emerging presentation

Commentary: "He's done his job", no he hasn't done it (to do enough to podium)

Gartung

4z-3t looked easy, 4z fall, 3a fall, skating like a senior, i.e., empty of choreography between first three jumping passes, 3r with squeaky landing, 3z-3t bit slow getting free leg out, but okay, 3f-2a-2a sequence, I'm not feeling musical awareness from him, mostly just a collection of elements, TES score leads by a lot

Li

2t, chiffon sleeves on his costume, cumbersome jacket, and velvet pants--I feel like this outfit weighs him down, 3a with quick foot down, 3f-3t nice, 3z-3t settled in now, 3f with quick foot down, moving with freedom, nice donut spin variation

Dot thingy shows an invalid element, but don't think Mark or Ted addressed it?

Long

3a-3t nice and flowy, 3a, 3r, jump landings look very clean with strong exiting edge, 3z-2a-2a, 3z fall. Compositionally, I'd like him to not repeat jumps back to back (one in combo, one without), basic skating is excellent with great glide, dramatic ending pose, well done
