David Pelletier Joins Dallas Stars NHL Team

Ooof, bad call, David.
Wonder if David and Katia will move to the US. Don't they currently live in Canada?

I imagine they split their time across the border so David could stay close to his young son. I guess he must be university age now.

One of my son's youth hockey coaches was a former pro player (NHL in Atlanta and Toronto, and he played for years in Europe). This was many years ago when DS was around 8. He told parents to put their sons in figure skating lessons to improve their skating skills. In figure skates. We did, and DS was a youth version of an NHL player in his skating skills. Too bad he didn't have the "hands" (stickhandling skills). But he could do an axel at age 11 in full hockey gear!

In my area, figure skating coaches do a good business teaching youth hockey players skating skills. Not surprised at former elite skaters doing this for the NHL - especially ones who love hockey.

From what I can see, David and Jamie Sale have a very ... idk, fraught co-parenting relationship. Jamie seems very unwell.

Well, their 17, almost 18-yr old kid is probably able to make his own decisions regarding which parent he wants to live with, presuming he's not headed off to college this fall.

Looks like he is following Glen Gulutzan as it seems all contracts for assistant coaches expired this year:

Still hard to not judge someone who accepts a job in the US these days 🤷‍♀️

Also a shame as I thought Katia was doing some work to build up pairs program in Canada and I can't imagine her not just moving back to the US with him now :(

I guess you follow the money and career but to the US right now? He is white so he should be ok. He will get a great dollar exchange. Maybe he will just commute back and forth during the season.

I think income wise, a player/coach/etc for a Canadian team or American team would get paid similarly. If Dave wanted to move to the Canucks or the Habs, I don't think he would have received a "price cut". But that would mean the Canucks or the Habs (or whatever Canadian NHL Team) was even offering him a position.

I have to imagine that when you’ve never played professional hockey and you get offered a coaching position with an NHL team, it would be extremely difficult to turn that down. This isn’t just a job as a skating coach. This is a step up from that.

Sounds like he’s been putting in the time doing similar jobs with the university and junior teams in Edmonton for some time( on top of the job as the Oilers skating coach), so likely was a career trajectory that was being aimed at.

I would definitely be thinking long and hard about moving to the U.S. at this time, but this seems like an opportunity that might not come along again. And for someone in his position (not having been involved in professional hockey as a player), beggars probably can’t be choosers with which teams they get hired by.

As an outside observer, I think this move makes sense from a personal standpoint for them. Assistant coach of an NHL team is a big step up from simply being a skating coach.

Dallas has a decently sized figure skating community, so Katia’s skills would certainly be in demand (and David’s too, should he wish to teach figure skating on the side.) Ilia Kulik coached in Dallas for awhile, so perhaps there’s connections there. Katia lived in the US for decades before moving to Canada, and both her daughters have ties to California - Dallas is certainly closer to California than Edmonton. And as previously mentioned, David’s son is almost 18, a typical age for transitions.

It is certainly a great career opportunity so I can understand why he would take it. I agree that Katia would have no trouble finding FS coaching ops in Dallas.

Is Sale still loony or has she come to her senses?

Still completely off the deep end.

I met my old lover on the street last night
He seemed so glad to see me, I just smiled
And we talked about some old times, and we drank ourselves some beers
Still loony after all these years
Oh, still loony after all these years

I'm not the kind of gal who tends to socialize
I seem to lean on old familiar ways
And I ain't no fool for love songs that whisper in my ears
Still loony after all these years
Oh, still loony after all these years

Four in the morning
Crapped out, yawning
Longing my life away
I'll never worry
Why should I?
It's all gonna fade

Now I sit by my window and I watch the cars
I fear I'll do some damage one fine day
But I would not be convicted by a jury of my peers
Still loony after all these years
Oh, still loony
Still loony
Still loony after all these years
