The 2024-25 Awards Season Thread

The thing that really got me about the anonymous ballots was that some voters assumed Ralph Fiennes already had an Oscar and said they were voting for Brody because he hadn't won yet. It's so easy to research that stuff and they just didn't at all.

And here’s the thing: Maybe someone should win more than one Oscar. 😉

And even if Ralph Fiennes had already won an Oscar from his previous two nominations, Schindler’s List was in 1993 and The English Patient was in 1996. It’s been three decades since he’s even been nominated. It’s not like he gets nominations like Meryl Streep.

The comments about Dune: Part Two were wild. I currently have it winning two (Sound and Visual Effects) awards. Is it actually winning anything? 🤔 😱

The thing that gets me about these articles, and, frankly, diminishes the Academy Award, is that so many voters don't even watch all of movies. I mean, I get it. That's a lot of time, but then, how can they vote? It seems like it's all a popularity contest. That said, that doesn't mean I won't be happy if my favorites win.

I definitely agree, Viola Davis should have two. I don't have a horse in the Adrien Brody race, he's not an actor I care enough for to put effort into watching. If he wins then so be it.

Oh honestly this 100%. I think Kirsten Dunst and Edgar Wright are the only two I've ever seen straight up say they watch everything. So many of these articles are just people justifying why they didn't. I watched 335 movies last year, they could definitely make time to watch all the nominees.

As it turned out, I saw neither of the two movies I had planned to see this week. Too busy. I can see one on Sunday and the other next week, if it is still in theatres. These movies are disappearing way too fast. Usually movies change on Fridays but right bus they are changing on a Thursday or even earlier.

He really should have been nominated for The Grand Budapest Hotel.

There are articles on Chalamet everywhere- from 60 minutes to NYT , he is the only one they are publicizing. It bothers me a great deal. Is this just a marketing strategy by the studio to get him elected or is something else going on? He was very good but so were other top actors. Why is he the only one getting publicity?

Because Chalamet clearly has superb PR people and he wants to campaign hard for this Oscar. My concern for him now is if he loses tomorrow night, I don’t want him to turn into another Bradley Cooper.

I have not seen all the nominated movies but here are my
Should win/Will win predictions for major awards.

I have not seen any documentaries, short films or animated features, and I don’t know any songs, so I am not going to pick those categories.

Should win / Will win

Best picture: Brutalist / Anora (BP has created more surprises since they switched to 8-10 nominees); wild card - A complete unknown

Best Director : Brutalist/ Anora. Wild card : A complete unknown (IMO shouldnt have been nominated).

Best Actor : Adrien Brody / Tim Chalamet. Wild card - Ralph Fiennes.

Best actress: Demi Moore/ Demi Moore ( I didn’t see her movie, but based on other awards). Wild card- Mikey Madison (Anora)

Best supporting actor: Ed Norton - A complete unknown / Kieran Culkin

Best supporting actress: Zoe Saldana/Zoe Saldana (based on other awards)

Best editing: Conclave/ Anora

Best Cinematography: Brutalist (would have picked Conclave if it was nominated)/Dune 2

Best adapted screenplay: Conclave/Conclave

Best original screenplay: Real Pain / Anora

Original score: Brutalist/? (Conclave if it is nominated)

Best costumes : Conclave / Emilia Perez

International film: I’m still here/ Emilia Perez

Note: Anora may win many major awards or almost none, like at GG. My gut says it will have a strong presence at the Oscars; so will A complete unknown.

Should win/will win for some categories:

Best Picture:
Should Win: The Brutalist
Will Win: Anora

Best Director:
Should Win: Brady Corbet
Will Win: Sean Baker (The DGA/PGA combo is too difficult to go against)

Best Actor:
Should Win/Will Win: Adrien Brody
(I know Timmy won SAG but Brody won every other award)

Best Actress:
Should Win: Mikey Madison
Will Win: Demi Moore

Best Supporting Actor:
Should Win: Any of the other nominees
Will Win: Kieran Culkin (nothing against him personally but I honestly preferred all the other performances in that category and don’t understand how he’s sweeping)

Best Supporting Actress:
Should Win/Will Win: Zoe Saldana (I hated Emilia Perez but I do think she was great in it).

My preferences:

Best picture: Probably The Brutalist, although it wouldn't be my choice. My choice would probably be Conclave
Best actor: Adrien Brody is most likely, but I'm rooting for Chalamet
Best Actress: Demi Moore over Fernanda Torres, who was also brilliant
Best supporting Actor: Yep, Keiran Culkin has it, for taking a role that could have been merely annoying, and giving it humor and humanity. Although I would have voted Stanley Tucci if he'd been nominated
Best supporting actress: Zoe Saldana, who was the best part of the mess that was Emilia Perez

Just saw I’m still here in a theater in Scottsdale. It kept disappearing from whichever theater it was running at everytime I planned to see it, so I am glad that I finally saw it.

It’s a 10/10 movie in my book. So poignant! I didn’t know until the end that it was a true story. I wish it would win Best International film Oscar. I wish Fernanda Torres would win the best actress, but in fairness to Demi Moore she may deserve it. I have not seen The Substance, so she probably deserves it.

I didn’t know about this historical period in Brazil. I had a good friend from Brazil in college but she never talked about it. Of course this happened long ago and the topic never came up.

Anyway, I really liked this movie.

It’s a 10/10 movie in my book. So poignant! I didn’t know until the end that it was a true story. I wish it would win Best International film Oscar. I wish Fernanda Montenegro would win the best actress, but in fairness to Demi Moore she may deserve it. I have not seen The Substance, so she probably deserves it.

If I’m Still Here 🇧🇷 beats Emilia Pérez 🇫🇷 for Best International Feature Film tonight, I’m going to 😂 all over this thread.

Oh dear, Cynthia Erivo's gown is giving me a bit of Carol Burnett's "I saw it in the windows and just had to have it!" more than the homage to Hattie McDaniel intended. :shuffle:
