Yes I know they do a lot of promoting etc etc but regardless I really, really want to see this movie. I liked that trailer because of the song and the whole setup to it.

I’m thinking (and hoping) that this film will be better than Elvis was a couple of years ago. Which depending on how voters feel, could be very, very, good news for Chalamet.

Weren’t a lot of the issues with It Ends With Us the story itself? I remember seeing chatter from DV survivor advocates about serious problems with how the Colleen Hoover novel (and then the film) told this story.

And then there was the promotion of this movie itself. Why was Lively seeming that it’s a rom-com? From what I’ve heard so far, the DV scenes are quite startling to watch. It’s why I haven’t wanted to put this movie on my watchlist on Netflix.

I watched the movie as soon as it came out. The abuse scenes are NOT graphic at all. By the end he is committed to getting help but she’s committed to not staying with him etc etc etc. it flashes to 2 years later and she bumps into her ex so happy ending.

It’s insane the number of film Hoult has been in this year: The Garfield Movie, Juror #2, The Order, and Noseferatu. And he’s also Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman movie.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he won an Oscar before someone like Austin Butler, Paul Mescal, or even Timothée Chalamet.

It's costly to campaign for Oscar's, my guess is Srarchlight is banking on the drama and cultural hype Chalamet has right now, over a comedy (not always the easiest sell to the Academy :drama: ) that's only grossed $7M. (Even if Searchlight is now a subsidiary of [cheap] Disney.)

He deserves it. Emperor Peter in The Great made me a forever fan. He was absolutely hysterical.
 
I just saw A Complete Unknown. It was as much a love letter to the West Village and the independent music club scene as it was to Bob Dylan. I moved into Manhattan in 1968 and just missed Dylan as it followed his evolution from 1961-1965. I was not aware of Woody Guthrie as well as Pete Seeger as Dylan influences. But I loved this movie. I know that I've walked many times on those
streets and the cinematography captures the exact mood and essence of the city's atmosphere. I cannot believe Timothee Chalamet! I cannot imagine him not getting Best Actor.

Well I think with previous films Robert Eggers proves he knows about foreboding and horror. I keep hearing great reviews of this movie.
 
Well, truth is stranger than fiction. My cousin,who is just the same age as Bob Dylan, used to hang out at Gerde's Folk City in Manhattan's West Village during her college years. Bob Dylan use to hang out with her and her friends there. At the time, Dylan had no money and she and her friends used to treat him to sandwiches and milk(he didn't drink). Six months later, fast forward to Michigan where my cousin was in graduate school and Dylan was touring. When she went back stage, he refused to acknowldge her. Needless to say, he is not her favorite person.

Bob Dylan was definitely a very, very, very different type of personality from what I read. I can’t blame your cousin of course.
 
I watched "The Conclave" on Peacock last night and thought it was good but not great. What an amazing cast though. I'm a bit perplexed about Oscar buzz for Isabella Rosselini though. 30 seconds of memorable dialogue in a dramatic scene wouldn't capture my vote for even a nomination. :shuffle:

And today I watched @AngieNikodinovLove (ANL) 's reviled "Emilia Perez" on Netflix. Whilst not a movie for everyone's tastes, I found it audacious and original in every sense. Did it always work for me? No. (Most of the musical numbers are visually compelling, but were not that aurally appealing for me). But the bold storyline kept me interested until it's very un-musical like ending. Sans the musical numbers, it very much reminded me of early Pedro Almaldovar films. Despite being set in Mexico, it definitely has a very Euro aestethic. And whatever other criticism one may have about it, at least it's as far from the Hollywood comic book, unnecessary action sequel, CGI fests they are dumping out.

Beatrice Straight won Best Supporting Actress for Network (1976) and she was onscreen for only one scene for about five minutes. I could see a scenario where Rossellini wins, especially if the awards (GG, Critics Choice, SAG, and BAFTA) actually starts splitting between Saldana, Grande, and Rossellini.

At first, I thought Rossellini needed one more moment to get nominated, but she’s received nods at Golden Globes and Critics Choice. And she’s been making the promo rounds, so there’s that. ?

OK here we go I found something @ilovepaydays oh, she was from network, OK I can remember the movie but not the actress lol and Judi Dench had eight minutes.

Yes, but "Network" remains one of the greatest screenplays and prescient pieces of art EVER. Not how I'll remember "The Conclave." It honestly should have won Best Picture.

:rofl: Saldana makes zero sense to be in the supporting actor race, or Grande. I'd wager Saldana actually has the most screen time of the female leads in "Emilia Perez," and Grande in "Wicked," although she'll have less in the next part (and it's definitely not a supporting role). More weird Hollywood politicking there.

Finally sat through "Dune, Part 2," today as well... good law how many are they going to make? I thought this was it. Not as boring as the first, but Zendaya's character was the only one I cared anything about. I'll agree with someone's posts above that Austin Butler made a good villian in the limited time he had on screen. But ugh the storyline is convoluted and slow moving and the religious subplots are a bore.

I'll try and find one more Oscar bait to see on Max, Prime or Peacock to round out today's movie fest.

P.S. I read "Wicked" will available for rent on Prime starting next month, and then probably to stream on Peacock in mid-late February, per the Hollywood Reporter online magazine.

Villeneuve has said that the third Dune movie would be its last. It should cover the sequel Dune: Messiah novel.

I'll try and find one more Oscar bait to see on Max, Prime or Peacock to round out today's movie fest.

The Substance and Memior of a Snail (expected to contend for Best Animated Picture) are both available to rent at Amazon Prime for $5.99. I’ve looked for the other award favorites and it seems that most of them are either not available yet or Prime still has it at the $19.99 rate.
