Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

We now have a teaser trailer for Superman.

Hmm. 🤔 This looks really good but it also seems that there’s going to A LOT happening in this film.

But Nicholas Hoult looks great as Lex Luthor………
Tonally it's a little inconsistent. He's lying there broken and bloody in the snow, and then a dog in a cape shows up, and you just want to giggle. :)

Nice to see Rachel Brosnahan, though!

Let's just say that if you already have negative feelings about Russians because of war and/or skating, this is not gonna help.

Especially about the oligarchs. 😬

I still find it amazing that it got only a “R” rating.

Meanwhile, I’m still waiting to be able to buy tickets for The Brutalist. It’s supposed to open in the 🇺🇸 tomorrow.

Wow, the reason why I don’t wanna see it is because it looks like another heterosexual Cinderella love story tragedy lol . I’m going to an age now where I don’t want to see 21-year-olds navigate love lol

EH, I saw it more like a more raunchy and realistic version of how Pretty Woman would have turned out.

I mean, are there people who actually think that Edward and Vivian would have really worked out long term? 🤔 😬 😆

Probably not, but I remember that they actually gave the original movie cut a more realistic ending and test audiences HATED it, so they gave them a HEA ending instead.

Julia has talked about this many times, she has said when she first got the script it was very different…. then the project went to Disney and it became disnified.

The original ending of pretty woman was supposed to be Richard gere opens up the limousine door and kicks her out with his foot and the movie back then was called $3000.

And who knows how the movie would have done with a more realistic ending? Test audiences aren't always right.

Personally, I would have been happy to see Vivian enrolled in a Community College working towards a degree in something she had shown interest in during the movie like starting a business. And a flash forward to 5 years later and Edward getting married to someone because his week with Vivian taught him how to let go and be vulnerable. Vivian could be there with her partner/spouse because maybe Edward had invested her business and they were all friends.

So still a happy ending. But also a realistic one.

I don't disagree but if anyone can handle a movie with a bunch of different things happening it's James Gunn. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies and his Suicide Squad movie all have a ton of characters with a lot going on and they are generally good movies that give the characters good plot lines and development.

I am cautiously optimistic about this. I don't want to get too excited because we've been burned so many times before with Superman lately but from the interviews James Gunn has done and this trailer, he definitely seems to understand Superman and how's he's supposed to work. The comic runs the movie is at least inspired by are some of the more well regarded Superman comics from what I've read.

ETA: Because I just watched the trailer again, I love how almost 50 years after Christopher Reeves Superman that John Wiliams theme is still the music most easily identifiable for Superman. It's such a good piece of music.

Finished Blitz. I found some of it really compelling and some of it not as interesting. But good acting and production values. Reminiscent of an 80s film called Hope and Glory. And was that Ronan’s real singing voice?

My assistant manager went to Sonic 3 and said it was good, another friend of mine went as well and loved it. It’s Letterboxd ratings are pretty solid too.

Well this trailer freaked me out a little and now I want to see this film:

Sony Pictures isn’t wasting any time.
The studio on Thursday announced it will open 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in theaters on Jan. 16, 2026, the beginning of the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The movie is the second installment in Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s planned zombie apocalypse trilogy.
Earlier this month, Sony released its first teaser trailer for 28 Years Later [linked above by Cachoo], the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic 28 Days Later which will hit theaters on June 20, 2025.

I watched 6888. Not a great flick, great actors, lots of overacting. Confusing opening of the movie.

I really, really, really want to see this movie.

Searchlight currently pushing Chalamet and Norton is getting interesting now. The current chatter is that Best Actor is purely between Brody (The Brutalist), Fiennes (Conclave), and Chalamet and Best Supporting Actor is between Culkin (A Real Pain) and Pearce (The Brutalist).

The problem is that it looks like Searchlight is being more ho-hum about A Real Pain right now. Which is nuts because, 1) A Real Pain is a GREAT dramedy IMO, and 2) It has a good shot of winning more nominations than just for Culkin. But the film needs WAY more people talking about it.

This trailer is even better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiXGddC6Qjc .. for me anyways.

It’s a bit longer, but remember the thing they want to do right now is RAVE about what the critics and awards are saying. 📣

Wow—remember all of the Blake Lively bad press a few months back? The NYT has some interesting revelations about that:

I remember saying at the time of the film's release that the negativity around Blake had the feel of a coordinated attack. And that line quoted in the story, "we can bury anybody," gives me chills. I hope she wins the suit, in all honesty, although I think it's going to be an uphill battle.

There seems to be a group who belieives she is doing this because of the bad press and not because of a problem. But it looks like she was communicating problems to them back in 2023 long before the premier. I think she is on to something.
