Between my love for words and my love for drama, not to mention a chaotic romantic life, I would have been hung by the neck til dead if SM existed in my '20s. :shuffle:

Not a bad tactic given how well it worked to get Virtue and Moir a cult following and lots of sponsorships (as opposed to the much less romantically paired D/W and P/C and many others).

Doesn’t make it any less odd a tactic when they actually are secretly married. Shippers love married couples. Weddings are huge social media money. Build it up, get the wedding sponsorships to get it paid for, get the wedding inspo views and ads, and hold the wedding. Doesn’t matter if you love each other as long as it brings in the $$$. They were already married so what harm could it do?

Virtue and Moir's extraordinary skill and performance quality, not to mention their many competitive titles, had a lot to do with them building a "cult" following and gaining sponsorships. There is no comparison whatsoever to be made between V & M, and Flores & Desyatov.

(IIRC, Davis/White had numerous sponsorships of their own -- but in terms of mainstream celebrity culture, the U.S. is a far bigger "pond" than Canada, and D/W did not reach the heights of mainstream visibility in their home country that V/M reached in theirs.)

IMO it was the opposite for V/M. They were always very clear that they weren't an off-ice couple. They got the following and the sponsorships because they were athletic, attractive, and well-spoken.

A lot of mine were saying how unique and innovative it was to use Moulin Rouge! And then the next year I had a friend say she saw one of the grand prix events and wasn't it so cool that V&M started a Moulin Rouge trend.

I had to let her down gently.

My early 20s were the early days of social media, and didn't receive any cyber bullying. What actually scarred me the most is what some people wrote about me on this message board, and I still remember the kick in the gut it was in late teens and early 20s. I realize this has nothing to do with safe sport, but I only share that to say it's very important on how we talk about skaters on here, and how it can affect their mental health as a general comment!

True, I was thinking more of the "sekret baby" type fans who would insist V/M were a couple even if V/M showed up at their home and told them that wasn't true.

True. Skating is expensive though so if she can generate an income to support her skating use social media then good for her.

Given she has had two failed partnerships I think there are bigger issues than the social media stuff

Of course the first commenter on IG starts listing the nice dance guys. Is everyone supposed to make comments with "not all men" and a list of boys who aren't naughty? When the subject of a discussion is bad behavior, victims are still expected to praise those who didn't abuse them. It's proving the point of the culture of coddling imo

Also like this commentator probably doesn’t know those guys or any other skaters. You can’t assume who is and isn’t a good person by watching them skate or coach on TV. Even when you know a person, abusers have different faces to show to people who aren’t their victims.

and i guarantee that they have received some preferential treatment no matter how nice they seem to their partners. We can only hope that they recognize it and call it out.

This is a good point overall of course, but in this case, the commenter is an ice dancer who represented the USA internationally a few times around the same time as Morgan, so she does perhaps have some firsthand experience.

I did too, but we weren’t his friends or family. The farther you are from someone the easier it is to accept that they are different than what you thought.

A lot of guys caught by MeToo didn’t surprise me (for example I always knew Matt Lauer was a creep.) But others did.
