2024-25 US Pairs Discussion - Triple-Twisting Through Tornado Alley

Williams/Lewer announced their FS music - Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles - and their first comp of the season will be Glacier Falls next week.

Hate this song so much. It will be hard to root for them while they're skating to it, lol.
I like the original but don't skaters usually use the Eleanor's Dream version that sounds like it's sung by a lounge lizard from an off-the-strip grungy Vegas buffet?

I don't like The Beatles enough to know there are multiple versions of a song I really don't like any time I've ever heard it, lol.

Now that’s blasphemy. It’s the Beatles’ best song ever. Although we will get some crappy cover…

I finally got the Williams/Lewer video to load with my wifi less phone (thanks for nothing Hurricane Beryl and Xfinity, truly the worst pairing ever). That instrumentation is definitely not the original Eleanor Rigby, pretty sure that's the Eleanor's Dream that everyone has used since Davis/White.

The Beatles are my favorite band ever but I hate it when people use them in skating. Videos with their songs instantly get pulled from YouTube. Or it's this meh version. The chamber orchestra in the original is so pretty, but the song is barely 2 minutes long so you'd have to use other pieces with it.

Question for those in the know - can you share what the criteria for being added to the ISP is for both junior and senior teams? We have Glacier Falls coming up next week and it's going to be the first opportunity some of these new teams have to earn the qualifying scores.

I'm hoping that the music rights changes will help see the end of awful covers. The big artists who don't need the money and name seem to love watching skaters/gymnasts/dancers/whoever use their music. It also can get you attention - for instance when Elton John praised Nathan. Some niche but still successful artists love it too - like Benjamin Clementine also with Nathan. Only a handful of artists would have a problem with it and we know exactly who those are.

And who caused the problem? A smaller market cover band.

I'd imagine The Beatles, being half dead and half very wealthy and secure in their careers, would have no issues with the actual version being used.

You'd think but they are very stingy with the rights to use their music. Garth Brooks is the same way.

Rights to Lennon-McCartney songs are notoriously difficult. Michael Jackson bought The Beatles catalog in the early 80s by outbidding Paul McCartney himself. Jackson sold all or part of the catalog to Sony before he died. I think McCartney has bought most of it back by now. But still, difficult.

I know there's a lot of monitoring involved and a certain type of placements need to be met.... other than that- not sure.

Small fields at Glacier Falls to start the NQS season off -

Senior -
Martins/Bedard
Williams/Lewer
Korytek/Chapman

Junior -
Flores/Wang
Moss/Galbavy
Jarmoc/Witkowski
Davison/Borisov (GBR)

Carpenter/Maravilla also skated their SP & FS last weekend at non-NQS Skate Detroit.
SP = 44.21 - https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2024/34066/SEGM055.html
FS = 65.66 - https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2024/34066/SEGM071.html

They are already on the ISP but the combined total of 109.87 may prevent them from being assigned to a JGP until later in the season. We'll see.

The person who sent me the Pairs ISP criteria gave permission to share the min scores:

Senior - 155.00
Junior - 125.00
Advanced Novice - 125.00

Must be achieved at the following competitions -
1) 2023-24 international competition
2) 2024 US Nats
3) 2024-25 approved competition (will be approved in advance by the Pairs Discipline Subcommittee)
4) 2024 NQS

Teams can submit a score from a competition that does not meet the criteria above.

What day is this competition?

Yes, I'm aware. ...

So you just made a typo -- no big deal.
I do think it is worth trying to avoid the misconception that I think some people (not you) have that NQS competitions are the same year after year. Especially for singles/pairs, the list varies from year to year. Glacier Falls and Mid-Atlantics are the only singles/pairs events that have been on the list for all three NQS seasons so far.
(I never was questioning ISP criteria.)

Oh, whoops! I edited and fixed it!

One of Efimova/Mitrofanov’s programs appears to be Spanish-themed

Shazaam says it's Uccen (DWTS Remix) by Taalbi Brothers

The remix is only 2 minutes long so it's going to be combined with something else.

Mark and Nica seem to have a Spanish themed program as well from a clip he posted.

Well, looking at the SP results from Glacier Falls...

Moss/Galbavy are looking good for a couple of JGP assignments. Jarmoc/Witkowski WD - that's a shame.

Seniors - gonna call that SkAm TBD spot for McBeath/Parkman right now. It certainly isn't going to MarBed or WilLew.

It looks like they downgraded all of the elements. That’s why the score is low. The next one they will put it all out there and get their skate America spot.

They were just marking their program, yeah that’s what it is. That’s what had happened.
