Yeah, it's going to be a North American Worlds without any North American judges on the panel. And, of course, there shouldn't be any North Americans on the tech panel, as the U.S. and Canada both medaled last year. And, really--except for maybe Lithuania--no countries with IAM's power players (at least I don't consider Harris & Chan, Smart & Dieck, and Komatsubara & Koleto to be power players at this stage).

Things are going to be less predictable than anticipated.

Guignard/Fabbri world champions? :D I wouldn't mind that. They're so good and they've worked long and hard. On the other hand, we wouldn't want a Canadian riot. Someone could get stabbed with a knitting needle.

I wouldn't count out Smart & Dieck just yet, @Dobre. They got a very good score for what they put out there at Finlandia.

Oh, no UK either. (Though Selby could still wind up on the panel). And no Georgia, no Israel. It's a pretty good panel for France, I think.

Oh, I'm not counting them out. I just think they're "in process." And considering how bad those twizzles were at Finlandia (+ how much I don't think Dieck is Elvis), I think Finlandia supports that current assessment.

Also, France, Lithuania, and Finland aren't too likely to want to propel Spain up the ranks if you think about it. Maybe not even Germany.

If ISU follows their own recommendations (which is not a guarantee as they didn't follow them last season for some panels), she shouldn't be as Fear/Gibson were top 5 last season

If we exclude, USA, Italy, Canada and Great Britain as the Feds placed 1-5 at 2023 Worlds, we are left with

Technical controllers

Christine Hurth (France)
David Molina (France)
Christian Bauman (Germany)
Ingrid Charlotte Wolter (Germany)
Halina Gordon Polorak (Poland)
Marcin Kozubek (Poland)

Technical specialists

Borounov Maria, Ms.Australia
Lyapina Svetlana, Ms.Australia
MacDonald Monica, Ms.Australia
Fraser-Lukanin Kristen, Ms.Azerbaijan
Gustafsson Pia-Maria, Ms.Finland
Petetin Roxane, Ms.France

Grincova Slavka, Ms.Slovakia
Kika Tomas, Mr.Slovakia
Yang Tae-Hwa, Ms.South Korea
Akimova Olga, Ms.Ukraine

Petetin wouldn't be considered as she is still listed as part-time coach of Lapareva/Brissaud. Maybe there are others in that list who have a potential entry.

Thank you for that reminder. I had spaced out the "top 5" part of that rule. Worlds is such a big event, I'd think the ISU would need to follow its rules here.

Callers this week in Budapest are
Christian Baumann (Germany), Pia-Maria Gustafsson (Finland) and Alper Ucar (Turkey).
Baumann and Gustafsson were in the Budapest 2022 Tech Panel too.

Panel of judges include
Gyula Szombathelyi who finished 28th at 1995 Worlds with Kornelia Pongo
Dominique Dieck who is Tim's sister. She used to skate with Michael Zenkner and they finished 16th at 2011 Junior Worlds.

Yes! He's Kateřina and Daniel's brother, I think he's about 5 years younger than Kateřina.
And the parents didn't think to produce another daughter for him to skate with? How inconsiderate.

EDIT: I forgot to comment on this when it happened, but Italy's long JGP medal drought in ice dance finally ended. Congratulations to Tali/Lafornara, you are now the vessel for all your country's hopes.

Piper and Paul posted a short clip of them dancing to a choreographed piece to Ghostbusters.
Not sure if they were goofing off or something has changed with their music for the RD

Where? I will try not to get my hopes up but at least Ghostbusters sounds more entertaining than what has been stated is their plan.

Thanks. I will keep my expectations low as that seems like they are fooling around. But I will be happy if it actually means something :)

There’s a clip of that same dance on Piper’s feed from September but it’s to “Paint the Town Red” so I think it’s just an October thing.

This makes the overscoring of Davis/Smolkin quite clear. Thank you for posting.

I watched D/S's Budapest fd, and I still think they are overmarked, but perhaps not as much as others here do. It did look much better than earlier in the season, but she still relies heavily on him to get deeper edges and cleaner turns. On her own she's weaker. Also their choreography is pretty...not good, and it doesn't help them to look any smoother. Hilariously on that season list their high score is about tied with Pate/Bye which I think is a team I'd put them about equal with in terms of skill so ?‍♀️ .

I wonder if Green/Parsons have any regrets about withdrawing from their second competition. Their low score was certainly an anomaly, like a lot of other dance scores have been; they very likely would have gained a much higher season's best to take into the Grand Prix series, as CPom did when they competed a second time.

But G/P have started slow before and gone on to turn things around, so they probably know what they're doing.

What's important for Green & Parsons is that they are ready for Skate America.

----

Top 5 musical crimes committed in the Budapest Trophy FD:

1. Exogenesis
2. Giving a dance team the same music you gave your break-out dance team two years ago. (River)
3. The Spartacus/Gladiator mish mash the Nosovitskiys are using. (I generally like the Gladiator soundtrack; but this compilation feels disconnected to me).
4. Swan Lake with zero ballet & the ugly push up lift. (Difficult, yes, but the position is ugly & this isn't the vehicle to make it work).
5. Exogenesis. (No, the repetition is not a mistake. Sadly).

Highlights: Corpse Bride. I don't think it will surprise anyone that I have never been a fan of Lauriault & Le Gac. This program is great for them. It is everything they have needed to do for years. It's a vehicle with personality. It's original. It uses their strength with their lifts in a purposeful way to tell the story of the program. Kudos.

I disagree. I don't think Davis/Smolkin are anywhere near Pate/Bye's skill level. Pate/Bye skate with way more speed. Both partners are equally matched and equally skilled (whereas Smolkin is doing most of the work in the Davis/Smolkin partnership). Pate's edges are far deeper and more secure than are Davis's edges. Pate has much, much better extension through her limbs and especially through her feet (she has wonderful turn-out) than Davis does. Davis/Smolkin use clever choreography that has Smolkin dragging Davis around and putting her in the correct positions, while Pate can achieve these positions on her own.
