No Bronski Beat. No Clash. No Soft Cell. No Human League. This list can obviously go on and on - but I’m not sure why I’m so disappointed in ice dance choices when they are consistently underwhelming every year!

Talking Heads as well as Clash are used for RD of Canadian juniors Audra Gans/Michael Boutsan.

Burning Down The House, followed by Should I Stay Or Should I Go.

Canadian juniors Caroline Kravets and Jacob Stark are using "Human" by the Human League along with Depeche Mode's "People Are People," and Jamie Fournier and Everest Zhu have a Soft Cell medley with "Frustration," "Seedy Films," and "Tainted Love." But yeah, outside Canadian juniors (oddly) there's been very little diversity, and there are very popular bands I'm still surprised no one is using.

yeah I'm really not counting juniors here (espeically the ones who won't make J Worlds) because I guess the point I'm trying to make is that this theme was set to engage audiences (from which I take it they also mean growing an audience, which is more likely to be done by seniors/more prestigious comps) and for me it just hasn't been effective. Just in desperate need for a waltz or a polka over here!!

The Motels, the Bangles, Quarterflash, Tina Turner, Culture Club, Pet Shop Boys... There is a long list of 80s music that's been overlooked or under-used.

I suspect the coaches are operating with the assumption that the judges aren't familiar with music from those genres and will only recognize the pop stuff. Or the tech committee communicated to the coaches that pop was what they were looking for.

I mean, it’s not like they’re in danger of a music violation even if they just do a program of glee covers.

Junior teams are using more variety of music choices this season. The skating is lower quality, but the music choices are more diverse and better, imo.

Jamie FOURNIER / Everest ZHU (CAN) Soft Cell complilation.

Elisabeth HAVERS / Leo HAVERS (AUT) - It's a Miracle - Culture Club
Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR) - Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi
Amy CUI / Kenny ECKERT (USA) - I want to break free & Under Pressure - Queen
Audra GANS / Michael BOUTSAN (CAN) - Burning down the house(Talking Heads), Should I stay(Clash)
Sara KISHIMOTO / Atsuhiko TAMURA (JPN) - Mr. Roboto - Styx My favorite music choice this season.
Diane SZNAJDER / Joseph BOOTH (FRA) -
I'm coming out/Upside Down by Diana Ross
Kristina BLAND / Matthew SPERRY (USA) - Straight Up/Cold Hearted by Paula Abdul

There is young junior team skating to Strangelove from Depeche Mode

I forgot about the young Chinese team skating to Roxette complilation.

Yufei LIN / Zijian GAO (CHN)

... Spandau Ballet
From the July 2023 NextGen competition thread in Kiss & Cry:
Charlotte Chung / Axel MacKenzie - "True" by Spandau Ballet (first half) - one of my fave ballads from/in the '80s! :)
They are the 2023 Canadian National Novice ice dance champs (9th in their junior international debut at the Lake Placid IDI).

...or Culture Club, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol, Human League, Spandau Ballet, Gloria Estefan, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Nene, Neneh Cherry, Soul II Soul, Sade, Stevie Nicks, U2, Pat Benatar...the 80's was such a rich decade for music!
There's definitely Pat Benatar. And I feel like someone has Whitney Houston somewhere.

I really haven't noticed any Cyndi Lauper, which is crazy to me as she was the female singer everyone wanted to dress up as and imitate when I was little. But I don't know all of her songs so I don't know if I would know something was hers without the "look."

(There was a lot of high profile use of Estefan last year so I'd assume teams are avoiding the unnecessary comparisons).

Adding to the "I can't believe there's no..." list, it's an 80s theme and neither Harris/Chan nor, as far as I can tell, Nette/Westwood is skating to John Farnham, which if you ask me means they have officially lost the right to call themselves Australian teams.

ETA: Based on the Shanghai Trophy livestream, it sounds like Guignard/Fabbri are now using Bonnie Tyler for both Holding Out For a Hero sections of the RD! Thank goodness...

Guignard/Fabbri's RD from Lombardia has appeared on YouTube, if anyone wants to see it/rewatch it: https://youtu.be/3OZyIpZon0I?si=i3K9INDS0x-eX22T

I'm going to spend the whole season in fear of them getting a music deduction (and kind of wish they'd got one here, where the stakes are low) if they don't change the music.
I'm afraid to disappoint you, but now there's no need to :D
They changed music.
