RIP Tina Turner

My Tina Turner story.

I saw Tina Turner in concert with Cyndi Lauper as the opening act on May 29th 1997 in Salt Lake City. It also happened to be the night the Utah Jazz were in Houston playing for a chance to be in the NBA finals. The Tina Turner concert was in the arena where the Jazz play. The concert was already very exciting as Tina was so great live (and Cyndi is no slouch herself in concert). There was an undercurrent the whole night as the city was very excited about the Jazz. At intermission, the monitors in the concourse were showing the ball game. The Jazz were behind - they would have another chance even if they lost so we all went back in the arena to enjoy the rest of the concert.

I don't know if it was Tina or the rest of her staff that had done their homework. Someone had. Tina was a very smart woman and performer. The concert was great anyway, but at some point Tina got on the mic and announced that the Jazz had won!! The entire arena went bonkers. Tina made the most of everything, the audience was in the palm of her hand and I don't remember ever being at a concert that was more electric. I will never forget that night and I have always thanked her for it.

One of the founders of modern rock n’ roll. This news hit me harder than I expected.

It is very hard to believe that she only had one US #1 hit on Wikipedia including proud mary was #2 and even with Ike Turner.
Though internationally combined... I imagine it would be a whopper and many no#1 hits combined ...

And sold more than 200 million records.

R.I.P.

Loving all of the Tina concert stories and sad I never got to see her myself!

When Kygo remixed "What's Love Got to Do With It" in 2020, Tina became the first and only artist to have UK top 40 hits in seven consecutive decades (almost for the entire reign of QE II). That kind of longevity is unheard of.

That popularity came up in a 60 Minutes interview: https://youtu.be/9KWnl2KyrxQ

I taped two concerts with my VCR, and I remember one was an HBO special. The other was Tina in Rio, and I believe Rod Stewart performed with her. Now I'm determined to find them if I can. I have so many VHS tapes with figure skating on them, and searching through all those tapes will be a challenge.

One of the songs with Rod Stewart and Tina Turner.

Another favorite from Tina.

ETA I did find one of the songs that Tina performed in Rio.

Thinking about this all day yesterday, I'm just in awe of her voice. Like it was perfect timing for the rock n' roll genre that she (and Ike) helped pioneer. That unique sound plus the absolute power behind her voice just made her perfect for an era but also timeless and able to keep making hits for decades. Not to mention, she had such incredible stage presence and was so winning during her interviews and the glimpses she provided of her personal life. Somehow the word "legend" doesn't seem to really capture just how incredible she was... maybe because that word has been tossed around casually for many years now.

Really a shame that she didn’t feel more appreciated in her homeland. :(

Very sad that she, with reason, felt so - I have been in awe of her talent and strength since my childhood in the 1960s, and learning of her life struggles and watching her soar beyond them in the 1980s and forward just intensified that awe and respect.

Her performance as the Acid Queen in "Tommy" was like nothing else I'd seen on film. Aunty Entity continued in that vein, and her video, music and TV appearances and her memoir established her legacy for all time.

I bet you she was blackballed after her divorce with Ike. He had strong connections with big producers at the time and some of them were as violent and abusive as he was… see Phil Spector.

I’m glad she found true appreciation elsewhere, which led to “Private Dancer” and then “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, which became US hits. I can see she was seen as a relevant artist in Europe while in the US, her associations with Ike burdened her with that nostalgia label. That said, people in the US did see her as a star and legend but I bet you it was better in Europe where they appreciated her even more as her own artist.

I think the article was talking about following her superstar status. She could get a crowd in the US while she could still fill stadiums in Europe. I see that with Springsteen now. He can fill an events center here---maybe 20,000 but in Europe? BIG crowds and all ages too.

Absolutely I know people that go to Springsteen in multiple cities in Canada.

Sadly I never saw Tina in concert. ?

I have just watched "What's love got to do with it" with Angela Basset and Laurence Fishburne as Tina and Ike Turner.
What an intense movie (although not exactly truthful)!
My respect for this woman knows no boundaries and I might have teared up once or twice.
