Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

Nathan's interview for Connections Academy

Nathan giving a message in Japanese on Japanese TV. The program was aired on Sunday so he says, "Let's do our best beginning on Monday!"

Showing off his new Elton John hoodie during SOI practice.

Tonight is the Figure Skating in Harlem Gala so we should getting lots of photos of the SOI cast all dressed to the nines!

Nathan in the Yale news:
Most famously, current student Nathan Chen ’24 dominated the figure skating competition in Beijing, becoming only the second American man since 1988 to win the individual gold.

While Chen took a leave of absence in the run-up to the Olympics, he spent two years at Yale while also competing in (and winning) major national and world competitions — an accomplishment made possible with the unflagging support of Yale Athletics.

“Some of my friends who are competitive athletes also decided to pursue the academic and athletic life, but for them the logistics were not as simple. Yale was extremely accommodating,” Chen said last year. “As soon as I decided to attend, the athletic director, Vicky Chun, told me, ‘Anything you need, come to us, we can help you.’”

For her part, Chun was struck by Chen’s humble attitude both on and off the ice. “He always covers his divots” — the holes left in the ice when he executes his jumps. “That’s the kind of person he is.”

“I remember telling Wayne [Dean, the longtime Yale Athletics administrator who died in 2020, just months after retiring as deputy athletic director], this is my dream: That he’s going to compete in the Olympics, he’s going to win gold, he’s going to have an awesome time,” said Chun. “And if we can play even a small part in that — his happiness — that’s what we need to do. Even if he didn’t win gold, we need to be there for him. And my dream came true.”

Nathan confirmed as speaker at the upcoming Committee of 100 conference on May 5

I didn't even know it was from Van Halen, I just thought it was a great title! Nathan really does always have music on his mind.

Nathan will be performing in The Ice

Interview in Newday
Chen skates solo to “Space Song” as well as Taron Egerton’s take on “Rocket Man.” The Elton John classic has become a Chen signature and a metaphor for his astronomical success.

Chen has lost count of how many times he’s listened to the words of the song but he finds it exhilarating every time. “I wouldn't necessarily say that any specific lyric calls to me,” he says. “It’s the energy the whole song generates for me.”
In August Chen starts his junior year at Yale, where he’s studying statistics and data science. Before he cracks the books he’s planning a vacation with his family. “We’re still figuring it out, but it’ll likely be somewhere in the U.S.”

When it comes to his competitive skating future, he says he’s doing some “soul-searching” before determining what’s next. “I’m just taking things one day at a time.”

When will the Family Feud episode featuring Nathan and his siblings be shown? The little clips I saw of the show looked fun. Thanks for all the news, sheetz!

Nathan on all things travel. Says his home base is now New Haven and doesn't have a home in Orange County anymore.:(
Not surprising - I’m sure his mom went back to Utah and he’s headed to college in the fall. Any trips back at this point will be shorter I’d guess.

I think later during the summer when Celebrity Family Feud usually airs.

He'll still need a place to stay if he goes back to practice in Irvine, though. Maybe he'll head back to Utah or stay with one of his siblings. Or maybe spend time at the Olympic Training Center to get work done on his injury.

Rents are so high in CA (I live here) that I’m sure having an apartment empty just in case he returns is not worth it. He’s got friends and coaches to stay with for visits.

I think he can afford an Airbnb when he's out on the West Coast. Or he can stay ith friends, but I don't think that would be for financial reasons. Not surprised that he may be returning to New Haven sooner than later after vacation. He loves the food scene there and he's got to get his head back into student mode.

Nathan PSA for vaccinations

Nathan practicing in shorts in Allentown. (Side note: I'm impressed with the number of Chinese fan cams popping up, even for practice sessions in towns like Allentown.)

SOI official store now has autographed photos available. There are currently 90 Nathan photos in stock.

More from Nathan's visit to Panasonic HQ

USFS produced a reel celebrating its past 100 years. Nathan appears several times, including the end.

Looks like Nathan's memoir has a new title, for now: One Jump at a Time.
Honestly think Might As Well Jump was better.

Just wanted to post this video from the Long Island show which really illustrates what that dance instructor was saying about Nathan's beautiful qualities. I really love this part of the Weeknd medley where his movements are so crisp and on point.

ITA on the title.

Nathan hasn't appeared in any of the Team USA photos in DC so far, although a few others skaters seem to be MIA as well. :scratch2:

Meanwhile birthday greetings have already begun streaming in on twitter:

A fan shared her fun experiences at the Long Island SOI M&G. Apparently she's the fan who filmed his viral belly flop video at Nats.

Another fan at the Long Island show shared his very enthusiastic reaction to watching Rocketman.

HAPPY 23rd to Nathan! :) Here are some of the other famous people with whom he shares his 5/5 birthday:
