Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

Nathan with a short message to the fans. In Japanese he begins with a hello and finishes with an invitation to the show.

The 3 men's Olympic medalists sat down for a 3 way chat:
Yuma says he's a little nervous to have Nathan there in front of him.
Shoma says he wanted Nathan to skate as he has for the last 4 years and win the Olympics. Nathan expressed his thanks and said he'd like to talk about games next time because Shoma is so good at them.

Nathan's latest IG update from the show.

SOI Japan tour is done. Here's a revisit to my favorite part of show where Nathan weaves in and out of the other skaters during What a Wonderful World. On day 3 he was zooming around so quickly I was worried he would sideswipe Evan, and if you look carefully Evan moved his foot back a little just in case.

According to Alexa's IGS she's already back in the US and headed to Florida for the first US SOI show, so likely the others are as well.

Nathan on the cover of the SOI program

AP news story on SOI
“The whole cast is excited to be here,” says Chen, whose dominant Olympic performance climaxed a career including six U.S. titles and three at worlds. “It's been a while since we've been able to do a show, and to be able to be together after two years of not — and to celebrate the work we all put in before and after the Olympics — it's very exciting.”
Chen, who also will skate to “Space Song” by Beach House in another solo routine, chuckles when asked if Elton John reached out after the Olympic triumph.
“He sent out a tweet after the competition, which was real sweet,” Chen says. "I personally did not even imagine he knows who I am.

“It is definitely one of the more meaningful programs I have skated. Earlier this season I was not planning to skate to it. After picking it up again, it definitely felt like the right fit. I'm glad I had the opportunity to bring it back and it was the vehicle that helped me.”
Perhaps the most entertaining and memorable show programs are the group numbers. Chen, for example, will skate in all four of them, to music by AC/DC, The Weeknd, Jon Batiste and, naturally, Elton John.

Nathan's IG post about last night's Elton John concert

Update on Nathan's injury and school situation:
Chen did not compete in the world championships due to an undisclosed injury.

“I’m still working through [the injury],” Chen said. “At some point, I will disclose more information about it but right now, no. I’m not able to do the same stuff I would do in competition but shows don’t require the same level of technique. I’m doing what I can do right now.”

Chen, 22, said he planned to go back to Yale in the fall. He has two more years of school left.

“From there, I’ll decide what I want to do,” he said. “It’s still pretty TBD right now [his plans to keep skating competitively]. Right now, I’m doing Stars on Ice, then when I get back to school, I’ll be preoccupied, but I skated before when I was at school, so it’s not something that’s off the charts.”

Interview for SLC Weekly
Excerpt:
In 2018, our then-county mayor, Ben McAdams, designated May 16 as "Nathan Chen Day" in Salt Lake County. Might we look forward to your return visit each May so we can mark the occasion?
Absolutely! I will be back in SLC coincidentally right around that time for Stars on Ice.

What do you look forward to doing when you get back to Salt Lake?
I'm a huge Utah Jazz fan, and that is a great reason to visit.

Any tips for newcomers to Salt Lake City?
Of course, enjoy the mountains and snow! I lived really close to H-rock, so I would walk around that from time to time. Utah has a lot to offer, and sports/recreation is abundant.

Do you crave any Utah foods?
Crown Burger was always be a go-to. I'm a fan of Red Iguana as well.

What big goal is next on your list?
Graduate college!

Nathan will be stopping by Panasonic's NA Headquarters in Newark for an interview tomorrow.

Someone mentioned to me that the term "yalies" was not in fashion for those attending Yale. Looks like there is more than one opinion on the subject
Probably not, but not sure of the present term. It could be Eli's.

Just found this article that provides names sch as Eli's and Bulldogs.

That being said, boy, is Nathan going to need a long vacation!
